Spoilers through Season 8, Episode 7. The Season 7 finale hints that Jamie and Claire’s first daughter, Faith, may have survived, but it does not confirm Fanny’s identity. In a January 17, 2025 interview, co-showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts said the writers drew the idea from a brief passage in Diana Gabaldon’s ninth novel. Season 8 later answered the question: Faith survived, and Fanny is one of her daughters—making her Jamie and Claire’s granddaughter.
What the Season 7 finale reveals—and what it leaves unresolved
Season 7 ends with a chain of clues, not a confirmed family connection. In Episode 16, “A Hundred Thousand Angels,” Jamie and Claire take Fanny into their care after Jane dies. At the graveyard, Fanny receives Jane’s belongings, including a locket marked “Faith.” Then Claire hears Fanny sing “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside,” the song Claire sang to Faith after her birth.
Claire recognizes the song and tells Jamie she believes Faith may have survived. That is the finale’s cliffhanger: Claire’s conclusion is a suspicion, not proof presented to viewers in Season 7.
What producer Matthew B. Roberts said about the reveal
In a TVLine interview published January 17, 2025, Roberts said the writers’ starting point was a passage in Book 9. “There’s a blurb in Book 9 that gave us the idea of, ‘Hey, what if?’ And we ran with it.” He described the Season 7 ending as a cliffhanger and said Season 8 would address both the answers and their ramifications for Jamie and Claire.

That interview captured the question as it stood when the finale aired. The show has since resolved it: Faith survived, and Fanny is one of her daughters.
How Season 8 resolves Fanny’s identity
Season 8, Episode 1 confirms that Faith survived and had two daughters, one of whom is Fanny. The family connection is therefore direct: Fanny is Jamie and Claire’s granddaughter. The answer comes well before the series finale; Season 8, Episode 10, “And the World Was All Around Us,” is listed as the show’s 2026 finale.

Episode 7, “Evidence of Things Not Seen,” adds more of Faith’s history. Jane’s account and a flashback involving Master Raymond and the Paris lacemaker expand the story behind the revelation. Vogue’s account notes the painful irony: Faith had died before Jamie and Claire discovered that she had survived childbirth.
The Book 9 connection is inspiration, not a promise of identical plots
Roberts identified Diana Gabaldon’s ninth Outlander novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, as the source of the writers’ “what if.” That explains the idea behind the television cliffhanger; it does not establish that the show’s subsequent events reproduce the novel exactly. The confirmation that Faith survived and that Fanny is her daughter belongs to the television series’ Season 8 story.

Episode and viewing details
The Season 7 finale is Episode 16, “A Hundred Thousand Angels.” STARZ’s official episode listing identifies Episode 14 as “Ye Dinna Get Used to It,” so it is not the finale. STARZ’s listings provide subscription access to Outlander episodes; catalog availability and subscription terms can vary by market.
