Raoul Peck’s Orwell: 2+2=5 is a forceful, unsettling essay-film about how political power distorts truth—and why George Orwell’s warnings still resonate. Calling it “the most terrifying movie of 2025” is a critical judgment, not an objective ranking: the film’s alarm comes from the collisions it stages between Orwell’s writing and images of the present. That associative method gives it urgency, though its selective framing and limited historical depth may leave viewers wanting a fuller inquiry.
What is Orwell: 2+2=5 about?
Directed by Raoul Peck, the 2025 documentary runs 119 minutes and centers on George Orwell’s final months and the ideas behind Nineteen Eighty-Four. The film connects Orwell’s life and writing to concepts including Doublethink, Thoughtcrime, Newspeak and Big Brother, while bringing his work into contact with contemporary political concerns. Damian Lewis voices Orwell.
The film’s argument, as described by PBS NewsHour and reflected in its critical reception, concerns surveillance, inequality, propaganda and leaders’ efforts to distort truth in order to retain power. These are the film’s chosen themes and framing, not a substitute for a broader account of Orwell’s politics or the history of totalitarianism. How does Peck tell the story?
This is not a conventional biographical documentary built around a chain of interviews and explanatory narration. Peck combines readings from Orwell’s diary, historical clips, cinematic references, biographical fragments and present-day footage. The film was made in collaboration with the Orwell Estate, according to Jigsaw Productions’ official film page.

The structure circles Orwell’s time on Scotland’s Isle of Jura, where he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four while ill with tuberculosis. Rather than treating that setting as the start of a straightforward life story, the film uses it as an anchor for associations between Orwell’s words and images from different periods. Hearing the prose read aloud by Lewis gives the writing a prominent place in the film’s argument.
That approach can be vivid, but it can also disorient. The Associated Press review notes that the deliberate blending of past and present sometimes makes it difficult to follow the documentary as a historical account. That is partly a matter of form: montage invites viewers to make connections, but does not always stop to explain or test them.

Why is the film so unsettling?
Its urgency comes from the gap between Orwell’s language and the contemporary images Peck places beside it. The film asks viewers to consider how surveillance, propaganda and political language can normalize abuses of power. Orwell’s writing supplies the vocabulary; the montage makes the argument feel immediate rather than remote.
That force is also why the film can feel declarative. A sequence of images placed beside Orwell’s words can suggest a relationship without fully establishing its historical context or distinguishing between different political situations. The film’s warning about truth manipulation therefore invites a useful question of its own: what is being shown, what is being left out, and how much context does the connection need?

What are the film’s limits?
The reviews point to a productive tension. Peter Bradshaw’s Guardian review calls the film serious and worthwhile, praising the effect of hearing Orwell’s prose while wishing it asked more searching questions about Orwell and offered more information. Lindsey Bahr’s Associated Press review finds its impact undeniable, but cautions that it is not a comprehensive historical report on Orwell, totalitarianism or doublespeak.
That distinction matters when deciding what kind of documentary this is. Peck makes a contemporary political essay using Orwell as a lens, not a definitive biography or a complete history of the systems and ideas the film invokes. Its selective, associative construction can sharpen the warning while leaving less room to examine Orwell’s contradictions, the contexts behind the archive, or competing interpretations of the present. Viewers seeking that depth may find the film’s questions more compelling than its answers.

Is Orwell: 2+2=5 worth watching?
It is worth watching for viewers interested in Orwell, political documentaries or the way film montage can turn familiar writing into a present-tense argument. Peck’s essayistic method offers a bracing encounter with Orwell’s language and makes its concerns hard to dismiss. It is less suited to someone looking for a measured, explanatory history: the film’s urgency is part of its appeal, but its form and selective framing limit how much context it supplies.
