AWS Lightsail is a simpler, clearly priced starting point, but its smallest listed bundle has only 0.5 GB of memory and 1 TB of transfer. Neither provider’s published allowance guarantees that a virtual machine can encode and publish your particular stream reliably. What matters most in this comparison
For a continuous playlist, compare more than the monthly price. You need a VM that can run your playback and publishing workflow, enough outbound transfer for the stream, a region you can actually use, and a recovery plan if the process or YouTube connection stops. Oracle and AWS publish resource and transfer limits, but the cited provider pages do not benchmark either service for 24/7 YouTube streaming.
- Compute: Check whether the selected VM can handle your playback and any video encoding. A transfer allowance says nothing about encoding performance.
- Outbound data: Estimate stream traffic from the outgoing bitrate and operating hours, then check the selected plan’s regional allowance and overage terms.
- Availability: Oracle Always Free compute is limited to your tenancy’s home region, and host capacity may prevent provisioning. AWS allowances and pricing also vary by region.
- Operations: A VM can run a process, but you remain responsible for setup, monitoring, and restarting it. That does not guarantee the YouTube broadcast stays available.
The figures below are provider-published limits and prices, not measured performance results. Check the linked provider pages before deploying because plan details can change.

How much data does a 24/7 stream use?
Estimate transfer from the bitrate sent to YouTube, not just the size of the source playlist. A stream that is re-encoded on the VM uses the outgoing encoded bitrate; if a workflow sends the source as-is, use the actual outgoing stream bitrate. The following calculation is an estimate using decimal gigabytes and assumes the bitrate stays constant for all 24 hours each day:

Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 × days in month.
For example, at a constant 4 Mbps over a 30-day month: 4 × 10.8 × 30 = 1,296 GB, or about 1.3 TB of outbound data. This estimate excludes protocol overhead, interruptions, and other traffic from the VM, so leave headroom. Compare your estimate with Oracle’s stated 10 TB monthly outbound allowance or Lightsail’s applicable regional allowance; do not treat either number as a performance guarantee.

When Oracle Cloud may fit better
Oracle is worth considering if you are comfortable managing a VM and can use an eligible Always Free shape in the home region selected for your tenancy. Its published 10 TB monthly outbound allowance is substantially larger than the 1 TB shown for the listed Lightsail $5 bundle, but the relevant questions remain whether the VM is available and whether its compute resources suit your workflow.
Important Oracle Free Tier limits
- Always Free compute is available in the tenancy’s home region, which is selected at signup. Host capacity can block provisioning; Oracle says an “out of host capacity” message means the selected home region temporarily lacks Always Free shapes.
- Oracle’s page lists up to two AMD Micro VMs and the Ampere A1 monthly allowance of 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours. For Always Free tenancies, that A1 allowance is equivalent to two OCPUs and 12 GB memory.
- The US$300 promotional trial lasts up to 30 days. Always Free resources continue after it, while paid resources created with trial credits may be reclaimed unless you upgrade. Oracle also warns that A1 instances beyond the Always Free tenancy limit are disabled and deleted after 30 days unless you upgrade; staying within two OCPUs and 12 GB memory is necessary to retain the Always Free instances after the trial.
- Oracle says most users need a mobile number and credit card to sign up, and that the card is not charged unless the account is upgraded. Check current Console eligibility labels, tenancy limits, and usage before deployment; do not assume all surrounding resources or usage are free.

When AWS Lightsail may fit better
Lightsail may be the more straightforward choice if you prefer a published monthly bundle and are willing to pay for a VM rather than depend on Always Free capacity. AWS lists a $5 per month Linux/Unix bundle with public IPv4, 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. That specification alone does not show whether the smallest bundle can encode your chosen resolution and bitrate; test your actual workflow before relying on it continuously.
AWS counts inbound and outbound traffic toward the Lightsail instance’s monthly allowance. If you exceed it, AWS says only qualifying excess outbound transfer is charged; inbound traffic is not billed as transfer overage. Allowances aggregate for instances of the same bundle in a region and reset monthly. Some regional plans—including Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and São Paulo—have half the allowance of plans in most other regions. A practical decision checklist
- Choose a region you can use. For Oracle Always Free, this is your tenancy’s home region, and capacity may be unavailable. For Lightsail, check the exact bundle and regional data allowance.
- Calculate expected transfer. Use the bitrate actually sent to YouTube and the number of hours per month. Compare the result with the provider’s current allowance and retain headroom for overhead and other traffic.
- Validate compute separately. Confirm that the selected VM can run your playlist source and any required encoding at your intended resolution and bitrate. Provider specifications are not workload benchmarks.
- Plan for interruptions. Decide how you will detect a stopped playback or publishing process and restore it. A VM’s availability and YouTube’s live-stream availability are separate concerns.
- Check account and billing state. On Oracle, review Always Free eligibility, usage, trial status, and the risk of reclaiming paid trial resources. On Lightsail, verify the current price and regional overage terms.
Rights and YouTube monetization still apply
Hosting a playlist on a cloud VM does not grant rights to its videos or music. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Clear rights for every item in the playlist before broadcasting.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams; monetized content is expected to be original and authentic, and repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible as “inauthentic” content. Reused-content review is separate, and permission or the absence of a copyright claim does not automatically settle eligibility. A continuous loop may face monetization risk, but YouTube’s policy does not determine an individual channel’s case in advance.
