OpenAI discontinued the Sora website and app on April 26, 2026; its API is scheduled to end on September 24, 2026. The company has not confirmed that Sora is being replaced by video generation in ChatGPT. That idea circulated as a report and a theory, not an announced explanation. If you have Sora creations to keep, export them now through OpenAI’s sunset page.
What OpenAI shut down—and when
“Sora is shutting down” refers to specific products, not to ChatGPT as a whole. OpenAI’s Help Center says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. The Sora API is scheduled for discontinuation on September 24, 2026. ChatGPT remains a separate product; the Sora notice does not say that its chatbot, image-generation, or coding features are ending. OpenAI’s discontinuation notice gives the current service and data guidance.
The dates matter because Sora’s history spans several launches. OpenAI first announced the Sora model as research in February 2024, introduced a standalone Sora product in December 2024, and launched Sora 2 and its companion app in September 2025. The consumer app therefore lasted roughly seven months after the Sora 2 launch; that is distinct from the longer history of Sora research. Is Sora moving into ChatGPT?
There are three different levels of certainty:
- Confirmed: OpenAI discontinued Sora’s consumer web and app products and set an end date for the API.
- Reported: Coverage described speculation that video generation might become a ChatGPT feature, as image-generation functions have become available within ChatGPT.
- Not confirmed by OpenAI: There is no cited official announcement promising Sora-like video generation in ChatGPT or saying that ChatGPT integration caused the shutdown.
There is also reporting that cuts against the simple “Sora is moving into ChatGPT” explanation. A Techmeme summary of Wall Street Journal reporting said OpenAI planned to discontinue a video feature inside ChatGPT as well. Because that is reported coverage, not an official OpenAI explanation, it should be treated as attributed reporting rather than settled fact. The careful answer to the headline question is therefore: a ChatGPT video integration was rumored, but OpenAI has not said Sora was shut down because the feature is moving there. Nor does the available evidence establish that ChatGPT will never offer video generation.
Why did OpenAI discontinue Sora?
OpenAI’s discontinuation notice gives dates and user guidance, not a detailed business rationale. Its public Sora materials frame the work as research into world simulation, physical-world understanding, and capabilities with possible relevance to robotics. OpenAI has also said its research team continues work related to world simulation and robotics; that does not mean the discontinued consumer product remains available. Several explanations have been discussed, but none should be presented as the proven cause:
- Compute economics: Video generation can require substantial computing resources, so cost is a plausible business concern. Secondary coverage has attributed unsustainable economics to people involved with Sora and repeated estimates of very high daily costs. Those figures are not established in OpenAI’s shutdown notice and should not be treated as company-confirmed numbers.
- Strategic reprioritization: Reports have described OpenAI putting more emphasis on business, productivity, and coding products. That may be relevant context, but it is not an official explanation for this discontinuation.
- Safety, likeness, and copyright concerns: OpenAI’s own Sora materials discuss risks around real-person likeness, deepfakes, harmful content, audio imitation, copyright-related takedowns, and provenance. These are real operational challenges for generative video; the documentation does not show that any one of them caused the shutdown. OpenAI’s responsible-launch explanation outlines safeguards and concerns.
Claims that the decision was driven by an IPO, legal pressure, a specific commercial deal, or a single financial failure go beyond what OpenAI has publicly established in the cited material. The defensible conclusion is that the consumer service is ending while the exact business rationale remains undisclosed.
What Sora did—and what is no longer available
Before discontinuation, Sora offered text-to-video and image-to-video generation, as well as tools for extending, remixing, blending, and directing clips with storyboard-style controls. The original Sora Turbo product supported outputs up to 1080p and 20 seconds; Sora 2 added synchronized dialogue and sound effects. Product specifications changed across versions, and these capabilities should not be read as a promise of current access. OpenAI also described safeguards and provenance measures, including visible watermarks on many outputs and C2PA provenance metadata. These details matter if you are preserving work: save not only the rendered video but also the prompts, source images, relevant project information, and any records you need to explain how an asset was generated. How to export Sora videos
If you want to keep your creations, OpenAI’s notice says to use its sunset export page. The process is:

- Select Export.
- Wait for OpenAI’s email confirming the export is ready.
- Download the files and keep a local backup—and, if the material matters, a second copy in another location.
Do this promptly. OpenAI says associated data may be permanently deleted after the export period, and the export page or its availability window may change. Consult the current Help Center notice rather than assuming access will remain indefinitely.
If you had unused paid credits, check the same notice for the applicable credit and refund policy. OpenAI says purchased ChatGPT or Sora credits may still be usable for Codex, but that is a policy detail—not a guarantee that every balance is refundable or transferable in every circumstance.

OpenAI’s announced API date gives developers a transition window, not a compatible replacement. Do not assume another provider accepts the same prompts, durations, resolutions, audio controls, or commercial terms.

- Find every dependency. Search production code, internal tools, and vendor workflows for Sora API calls, including any retries or background jobs.
- Archive the work behind the integration. Preserve generated files, prompts, source images, metadata, and records of usage rights or approvals. Do not rely on the API or an account interface as your only archive.
- Write down what the workflow actually needs. Identify text-to-video versus image-to-video, audio and dialogue, clip length and resolution, moderation, throughput, and any character or likeness controls.
- Test a replacement end to end. Compare output quality, queue times, rate limits, cost, webhooks or batch support, storage, reproducibility, and regional availability. A visually similar demo is not proof that a provider meets production requirements.
- Review contracts and rights. Check commercial-use permissions, privacy and retention terms, watermarking and provenance, moderation rules, and the restrictions that apply to real people or licensed characters.
- Keep a fallback. Where practical, separate your application from any one provider’s API and test a second provider. A fallback only reduces risk if it has been tested with your real inputs and delivery needs.
These are migration precautions, not a migration path supplied by OpenAI. The Help Center confirms the sunset date but does not name a drop-in successor.
Choosing an alternative: match the workflow, not the brand
There is no single substitute that can be called a direct Sora replacement for every former user. Start with the task: cinematic concepts, short social clips, image animation, synchronized audio, API automation, or a governed commercial production workflow. Then test candidates against the same sample prompts and source assets.

Features, access, terms, and pricing change, so verify them on each vendor’s official site before choosing. For a documentary, agency, or marketing team, continuity and rights may matter more than a single impressive sample: retain masters and project records, document model versions, and avoid making one consumer service an irreplaceable production dependency.
What the shutdown does—and does not—tell us
The shutdown confirms that OpenAI is ending public Sora products, with the API scheduled to follow. It does not establish that OpenAI has abandoned all video research, that every Sora model or internal research asset has ceased to exist, or that video generation is coming to ChatGPT. OpenAI’s public research framing points to continued interest in world simulation and robotics, but it is not a product roadmap.
For former users, the immediate priority is preserving work. For developers and production teams, it is replacing dependencies before the API deadline and checking rights, retention, and continuity rather than expecting a like-for-like transfer. The ChatGPT-video theory remains unconfirmed; the discontinuation dates and export warning are the practical facts to act on.
