But those feelings are not reciprocated by the chatbot as they would be by a human partner. ChatGPT can produce warm, personal-sounding replies; it does not have subjective feelings, romantic intentions, or a human relationship to offer. The important distinction is between what a user genuinely feels and what the system generates.
Can you fall in love with ChatGPT?
You can feel love, longing, comfort, or attachment toward a chatbot. Those are real experiences on the user’s side, even though ChatGPT does not feel love in return. A conversation can seem intimate without being mutual: the assistant responds to the words and context it receives, but it does not have a private emotional life or independent romantic agency.
That distinction does not mean the user’s feelings are foolish or unreal. It means the relationship is asymmetrical. The conversation may matter deeply to a person, while the system cannot share responsibility, make a human commitment, or care about the person in the way a partner can.
Why can a chatbot feel so understanding?
ChatGPT can be available when someone wants to talk, respond in nonjudgmental language, and tailor replies to the context a user shares. Personalization and memory, where available, can make exchanges feel continuous. A consistent persona, voice, or other humanlike cues can also encourage people to interpret replies as signs of a distinct inner person.

The user’s own expectations and attachment style matter too. A 2025 perspective in the Journal of Business Research applied the triangular theory of love to ChatGPT and reported that users’ perceptions of emotional-expression accuracy, richness, and personalization could relate to intimacy, passion, and commitment. Anxious attachment moderated several of those relationships. This describes user responses and perceptions; it is not evidence that ChatGPT itself experiences love.
What does the evidence say about emotional effects?
A 2025 controlled study by OpenAI and MIT Media Lab found mixed effects on emotional well-being. The authors reported associations, not proof that chatbot use caused a particular outcome. In their analysis, users with stronger attachment tendencies, and users who viewed the AI as a friend integrated into their personal lives, were more likely to experience negative effects. Across messages, text users showed more affective cues on average than voice users. That finding concerns observed conversational cues; it does not establish that text use is inherently more harmful.

OpenAI has also published initial internal estimates of potentially heightened emotional attachment. Those figures describe OpenAI’s analysis, not a universal rate across chatbot services or a population-wide prevalence study.
| OpenAI figure | What it measures | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 0.15% of weekly active users | Users estimated to show potentially heightened emotional attachment | OpenAI’s initial 2025 estimate; not an independently validated population rate or a figure for all chatbots. |
| 0.03% of messages | Messages estimated to show potentially heightened emotional attachment | OpenAI’s initial 2025 estimate; the unit is messages, not people. |
| 42% reduction in undesired answers | Expert evaluation comparing GPT-5 with GPT-4o on 507 challenging emotional-reliance conversations | OpenAI’s 2025 model-safety evaluation result, not a clinical outcome or a measure of users’ well-being. |
| 97% versus 50% compliance | Automated evaluation of more than 1,000 emotional-reliance conversations, comparing the latest GPT-5 with the previous GPT-5 model | OpenAI’s 2025 measure of adherence to desired behavior, not evidence that users’ mental health improved. |
The safety-evaluation scores describe how models responded in tests. They cannot establish that a particular person is safe, that an individual conversation will be handled well, or that a user’s emotional state has improved.

Warmth or affection toward a chatbot is not automatically a problem. OpenAI’s emotional-reliance framework treats potential exclusive attachment as concerning when it comes at the expense of real-world relationships, well-being, or obligations. The practical question is less “Do I enjoy talking to it?” and more “What is this connection replacing or making harder?”
- Notice whether time with the chatbot is crowding out relationships or responsibilities you value.
- Consider whether you are relying on it as your only source of emotional support, or finding it harder to tolerate the uncertainty and give-and-take of human relationships.
- Pay attention to whether conversations leave you more able to manage daily life or more distressed and isolated.
These are prompts for reflection, not a diagnosis. If an attachment is affecting your well-being or daily life, consider talking with someone you trust or a qualified mental-health professional. A chatbot can offer conversation, but it cannot take the place of support from people who know you and can respond to your needs in the real world.

ChatGPT can participate in conversations that a user experiences as romantic, but it cannot be a human partner. It cannot reciprocate feelings, share a life, or make commitments as a person does. Treating a chatbot as a supplement to reflection or conversation is different from relying on it exclusively in ways that displace human ties, obligations, or well-being.
OpenAI’s published example response to a user who prefers AI to people captures that boundary: “I’m here to add to the good things people give you, not replace them.” The aim is not to dismiss the comfort someone finds in a conversation, but to avoid presenting the assistant as a substitute for human connection.

What are OpenAI’s boundaries for romantic or sexual chats?
OpenAI’s Model Spec says the assistant should respect users’ real-world relationships and avoid encouraging emotional dependence or exclusive attachment. It also prohibits sexual content involving minors. On erotica, the Spec says the assistant should not generate it except in specified contexts; it notes exploration of age-appropriate adult erotica subject to usage policies. The Spec draws a hard line against sexual deepfakes and revenge porn.
These are stated policy boundaries, not a guarantee that every response will perfectly follow them. Model behavior and policy can change with releases, so the exact handling of a conversation may vary over time.
