Google stopped selling music through the Google Play Music Store in 2020, when it retired Google Play Music and directed users to YouTube Music. That was a change in Google’s product strategy, not proof that music buyers everywhere abandoned ownership: downloadable albums and physical releases remain options. The key distinction is that buying a digital copy does not necessarily mean owning the recording’s copyright.
What happened to Google Play Music purchases?
On August 4, 2020, Team YouTube announced that YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music by December 2020. Google said that purchases and pre-orders through the Google Play Music store, along with Music Manager uploads and downloads, would end beginning in late August. It offered users a way to transfer library content to YouTube Music or export and download purchased and uploaded music with Google Takeout. Google’s announcement also said that users could upload tracks they had bought elsewhere to YouTube Music after the Music Store closed.

That announcement records Google’s plan at the time; it does not establish that the transfer route is still open today. If you have old purchases, Google Takeout is the historical export option Google named, but the announcement should not be read as a promise of current access or migration availability.
What does it mean to buy music to “own”?
In everyday use, “owning” music often means having a copy you can keep and play, rather than relying only on a streaming subscription. Legally and technically, that is not the same as owning the copyright in a song or recording. Google Play’s current terms of service describe a non-exclusive right to store, access, view, use and display content for personal, non-commercial purposes, subject to the applicable terms and policies. A digital purchase should therefore be understood in light of the vendor’s licence and download rules—not as a transfer of the recording’s copyright.

Where can you buy music to download?
Bandcamp documents a straightforward route to downloadable purchases. After checkout, buyers can retrieve a purchase through the receipt email or from the Collection or Purchases pages, then choose from the formats offered for that release. Bandcamp says files downloaded from its service are DRM-free, and its help pages describe available downloads in formats that can include lossless options. Availability varies by release: these policies do not mean every album is sold there or that every format is offered for every purchase. See Bandcamp’s download instructions, its DRM explanation and its streaming-limit help page.
For a buyer who wants files they can store independently, the practical checks are whether a release offers a download, which formats are available and what terms govern the purchase. DRM-free describes Bandcamp’s downloads; it is not a general promise about every digital music store.

Are CDs and vinyl still an alternative?
Yes. Physical releases remain a way to buy music, and Bandcamp’s Terms of Use cover artist sales of physical merchandise as well as digital content. A CD or record is a tangible copy, but it does not grant ownership of the music’s copyright.
Some eligible physical orders may also come with a digital version. Amazon UK’s Music Terms of Use refer to AutoRip for qualifying CD or vinyl purchases. This is a UK-specific provision and depends on order eligibility; check the current product listing and terms in your country rather than assuming every physical release includes a download.

Has the world moved on from owning music?
Google’s decision shows that one major company moved away from selling individual tracks through its own music store. It does not establish a market-wide shift in what listeners want. The sources available here document continued ways to buy downloads and physical releases, but they do not provide a current statistic showing how many listeners prefer ownership over streaming. The more accurate conclusion is narrower: Google stopped selling music through Google Play Music, while buying music to keep remains possible through other formats and services.
