Charles, Oliver, and Mabel accept a high-profile relaunch for their podcast, then learn that the billionaires they are investigating are now majority investors—and off-limits as podcast targets.
What happens in “Dirty Birds”?
“Dirty Birds,” written by Kristen Newman, aired September 16, 2025. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel continue investigating Nicky Caccimelio’s death and the secret Velvet Room, where several wealthy suspects gathered. The episode’s plot details below are drawn from Alex Reif’s recap for Laughing Place.
It opens with a mock-documentary portrait of the billionaires: Camila White says earning her first hundred dollars felt more exciting than her first billion; Bash Steed remembers outsmarting his father; and Jay Pflug claims independence while unseen assistants manage the game of fetch with his dog. The polished introductions make the three look as if they treat life—and other people—as a contest.
The Velvet Room suspects and the missing finger
After hiding in the Velvet Room, Charles and Mabel discuss the severed finger they found. In the Arconia lobby, the late Lester’s replacement is introduced: L.E.S.T.R., a package- and reminder-service robot that residents are told will scan their irises and fingerprints.

Oliver builds a murder board around Lester’s bird-code names for the Velvet Room regulars. With help from bird-watching neighbor Vince Fish, he matches Nicky to the Brown-headed Cowbird, Jay to the Eurasian Jay, Bash to the Kākāpō, and Camila to the Bowerbird. Mabel wants to ask Jay whether the missing finger is his, so the trio releases a podcast trailer to bring him in.
Jay arrives at Oliver’s apartment, followed by Camila and Bash. All three warn the podcasters not to name them, threatening a libel suit. The trio counters that the guests were near Nicky’s body and that Lester’s death may be connected. When Charles, Oliver, and Mabel reveal they examined Nicky’s frozen body, Camila is alarmed; Jay and Bash exchange looks.

The suspects say Nicky stormed into the Velvet Room during poker night, angry, with powder on his nostrils and a cleaver. Jay tried to stop him, and Nicky cut off Jay’s finger. The three say they fled and later returned to look for the finger. After speaking with them separately, the trio concludes that the billionaires did not kill Nicky or Lester. That conclusion narrows the suspects, but it does not settle the larger mystery.
Why the Wondify deal is the episode’s major twist
Mabel tells Charles and Oliver she is negotiating with Wondify, then admits she had been bluffing and sends the platform a real pitch. Wondify offers the trio a prominent relaunch for their show. The catch arrives after they sign: the billionaires are majority investors, now defined as protected “stakeholders” whom the podcasters cannot target.
The contract turns a professional opportunity into an investigative trap. The trio has agreed to build its show around people at the center of its case, while the deal restricts what it can say about them. Camila warns that a player can win by making an opponent think they are playing a different game; Bash adds that the game is over by the time the opponent realizes. Their closing lines make the deal feel less like a lucky break than a move already calculated by someone else.

The episode also fills in Mabel’s history with Althea, now known as THÉ. Mabel says they were once inseparable friends who made videos as Sunny and Cloudy. After Mabel spent a summer at her aunt’s, she says, Althea had turned their friends against her. That old rupture gives Mabel a personal stake in the present: she is not only working out what THÉ means to her now, but revisiting what ended their friendship.

Meanwhile, Jay hums one of THÉ’s songs during his conversation with Mabel. She wonders whether its title refers to her, and the exchange turns flirtatious. The uncertainty links her personal storyline to the investigation without resolving either one.
Who voices L.E.S.T.R.?
Series co-creator John Hoffman confirmed to TVLine that Paul Rudd voices L.E.S.T.R. Hoffman called Rudd’s performance “brilliant” and said he gives reads that “don’t make sense for a human being.” The robot’s voice is a small reveal alongside the episode’s larger power shift.
