Calvin and Hobbes ran from November 18, 1985, through December 31, 1995. For a digital starting point, GoComics hosts the official strip page; for a documented complete print edition, Andrews McMeel publishes the full newspaper run in both a three-volume hardcover set and a four-volume paperback set.
How Calvin and Hobbes began
Bill Watterson’s earlier ideas for daily comic strips had been rejected before he created Calvin and Hobbes. It debuted through Universal Press Syndicate on November 18, 1985. By the end of its run, more than 2,400 newspapers carried it, according to Andrews McMeel Syndication; that is a historical circulation figure, not a measure of current readership. The final strip appeared on December 31, 1995. Andrews McMeel Syndication’s history of the strip
Watterson studied political science at Kenyon College and briefly worked as a political cartoonist for The Cincinnati Post. The syndicate names Charles Schulz, George Herriman and Walt Kelly as artistic influences. The characters’ names also nod to political thought: Calvin is named for theologian John Calvin, and Hobbes for philosopher Thomas Hobbes. TIME describes the pairing as an “inside joke for poli-sci majors,” attributing that characterization to Watterson through the Los Angeles Times. TIME’s retrospective on the strip
Why the strip’s imagination still feels distinctive
The comic follows six-year-old Calvin and his tiger companion, Hobbes. Calvin’s imaginative life expands ordinary childhood into elaborate alter egos and adventures. Whether Hobbes is a living tiger or a stuffed toy is left open; the syndicate calls it a matter for debate. That uncertainty lets the strip move between Calvin’s inner world and the one other people see without resolving the difference.

Watterson also treated the newspaper page as part of the art. TIME recounts his experimentation with form and his successful effort to gain more freedom for Sunday-page layouts. He resisted licensing the characters for merchandise, a position consistent with his stated view of the strip’s subject. TIME quotes Watterson from The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book: “My strip is about private realities, the magic of imagination, and the specialness of certain friendships.” He also asked, “Who would believe in the innocence of a little kid and his tiger if they cashed in on their popularity to sell overpriced knickknacks that nobody needs?” TIME’s account and quotations

GoComics: an official online page
GoComics’ Calvin and Hobbes page credits the strip to Bill Watterson. The page displayed an ad-free subscription offer, but that alone does not establish whether the complete historical archive is currently available online or whether it is free. Check the page’s current access terms before relying on it for the whole run.
