Directed by Sridhar Rangayan and Saagar Gupta, it follows a gay couple facing a relationship crisis and connects their story to conflict within a family and the experience of a repressed trans woman.
What is Kuch Sapney Apne about?
The film opens with photographer Kartik and his partner Aman. A rift tests their relationship, and resolving it requires outside intervention. Their story unfolds alongside tensions between Kartik’s mother, Vasudha, and her orthodox husband, Damodar, as well as a subplot about a repressed trans woman. The film brings romantic partnership, family conflict and trans experience into the same narrative without claiming to represent every LGBTQ person’s life in India.

How does it continue Evening Shadows?
Kuch Sapney Apne is a sequel to Rangayan’s Evening Shadows (2018). In a February 2025 interview with Scroll.in, the filmmakers said they wanted to address audience questions about what had happened to the earlier film’s characters. The sequel also takes place in a changed public context: India’s Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality in 2018. That legal change is context for the film, not a promise that acceptance or safety followed uniformly.
What does the film suggest about family acceptance?
The filmmakers said stories from Sweekar, a support group for parents of LGBTQ children, informed the film. Scroll.in reported that Sweekar had at least 700 members at the time of its February 2025 article; that is a dated reported figure, not a current membership count.

Co-writer Saagar Gupta said, “At least in the metros, parents are opening up.” This is his observation, not a nationwide measure of changing attitudes. Director Sridhar Rangayan offered a different emphasis on the persistence of rejection: “The struggle for coming out is perennial – no matter however empowered you are, you are put down and discriminated against in some way or the other, not just in India but across the world,”
Why did the filmmakers choose a familiar film format?
Rangayan said the aim was to place a same-sex romance at the centre of a familiar Bollywood-style love story: “The film is trying to normalise a love story, with two men at the centre of the story instead of a man and a woman,” he told Scroll.in. He also described ongoing discrimination and obstacles to making and distributing LGBTQ-led films. Those are the director’s comments about the industry and social climate, rather than independently measured findings.
The report also attributes to Rangayan an estimate that around 20% more people came out after 2018, mostly in big cities. It should be read as his estimate, not as a verified, representative statistic about people across India.
When was it released, and where can it be watched?
Scroll.in reported a release date of February 21, 2025, and a limited theatrical release at PVR-Inox and Cinepolis cinemas across India. That describes the release at the time; it does not establish current cinema screenings, streaming availability or physical-media releases.

What does “one step at a time” mean here?
Gupta described the film’s closing spirit as “One step at a time.” The phrase fits a story concerned with change that is incremental rather than complete: a couple must work through a rupture, family relationships remain contested, and the film places the possibility of greater openness alongside the persistence of discrimination. Its hope is specific to these characters and their choices, not a claim that the wider struggle is over.
