The season premiered on September 9, 2025, and Hoffman’s October 2024 comments describe the story as it was being developed.
What did John Hoffman mean by “a completely different world”?
In an October 29, 2024 interview with TheWrap, co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman was asked about Lester’s death and where the Season 5 story might go. He replied: “We’re in the middle of breaking Episode 4 of Season 5 right now, so it’s crazy. But I’m really excited about it and it’s a completely different world opened up.”
“Breaking” an episode means developing its story. Hoffman was describing the creative possibilities opened by the new mystery, not announcing a new series premise. In the same interview, he said Season 5 would take a New York angle, touch on current events in the city, and reflect New York both historically and in its modern form. He also called it “another wildly funny world for our group to get thrown into.”
How the teaser fits the show’s premise
The official Hulu series page describes a trio of true-crime-solving podcasters navigating the Arconia and its suspicious residents. Season 5 continues that broad mystery-comedy framework. Hoffman’s comments point to a fresh story world within that setup: the city’s changing character and history provide new territory for the trio’s investigation and humor.

So the phrase is best read as a description of the story opportunity, not a literal change of location or format. Season 5 remains a New York story. The later departure from New York is a Season 6 development.
When did Season 5 premiere, and where can you watch it?
Season 5 premiered on September 9, 2025, with three episodes, followed by weekly releases. The official ABC/What’s On Hulu announcement identifies Hulu as the U.S. streaming home. Disney’s international announcement identifies Disney+ as the platform internationally. Availability can vary by market, so check the service in your region.

What changed after Season 5?
Hoffman’s teaser concerned Season 5, but the series has since been renewed for a sixth season. Disney’s October 2025 renewal announcement described Season 6 as a 10-episode season set in the United Kingdom. A later Disney+ announcement dated August 25, 2026 said the trio would leave New York for the first time and gave December 8, 2026 as the return date. Those are Season 6 details; they do not change what Hoffman meant about the Season 5 story.
