The Tom Hardy film is Locke (2013), Steven Knight’s tightly contained psychological drama. Hardy plays Ivan Locke, a construction manager whose nighttime drive to London becomes a series of increasingly consequential phone calls. Locke is listed as free with ads on YouTube in the UK, but that listing is region-specific and can change; it does not mean the film is free everywhere.
What is Locke about?
After learning that a woman with whom he had a one-night stand is going into labor, Ivan Locke leaves an important responsibility at work and drives toward London. During the journey, he tries to manage the personal and professional fallout through hands-free calls with his family, colleagues and others. That premise is best left there: the film’s force comes from watching Locke make decisions as their consequences take shape.

Written and directed by Steven Knight, Locke is a drama rather than an action movie or a conventional road film. Its conflict is about responsibility, honesty, family loyalty and the cost of trying to do what a person believes is right after causing harm. The car is almost the whole setting; the story expands through the people Locke speaks to, not through visits to other locations. The BFI film record lists a running time of about 84 minutes. Listings vary slightly by version, so expect roughly 84–85 minutes.
Why Hardy’s performance stands out
Hardy is the only performer seen on screen. The other characters enter the film as voices on the phone, including performances by Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott, Tom Holland, Ben Daniels, Bill Milner and Alice Lowe. Holland voices Locke’s son Eddie; he is not a major on-screen presence. The cast listing identifies the principal performers.

That setup makes the film an unusual acting challenge: Hardy has no ensemble scene partner in the car and no action sequence to carry the momentum. He has to make the calls legible through shifts in tone, pauses and reactions, while the audience pieces together the pressures accumulating around him. The confined view also gives the car two functions: it is a moving workplace where Locke attempts to take control, and an isolation chamber from which he cannot escape the consequences of his choices.
The film’s reception supports calling it one of Hardy’s most acclaimed and distinctive performances, though “best” is ultimately a matter of taste. At the time of the retrieved Rotten Tomatoes listing, it had a 91% Tomatometer score from 216 reviews and a 72% audience score from more than 25,000 ratings; those figures can change. The critics’ consensus emphasizes Hardy’s performance in a one-man show. Hardy also received the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s 2014 Best Actor award, as recorded in the film’s reference record. None of that makes the film a universal fit: viewers who prefer his more physical roles in Mad Max: Fury Road, Warrior or Venom may find Locke deliberately restrained.
Is Locke actually free on YouTube?
JustWatch’s UK listing reported Locke as free with ads on YouTube Free when checked on July 27, 2026. That is a dated UK availability check, not confirmation for the United States or every other country. Streaming catalogs and film licenses change, and an ad-supported option means no direct rental fee—not an ad-free viewing experience.

Prefer a result inside YouTube Movies or on an identifiable rights-holder or distributor channel; avoid suspicious uploads, external payment requests and redirects. If YouTube does not show the full film as free in your region, check the legal rental or subscription options available there. The BFI page, for example, showed a £3.50 rental listing in the UK when retrieved. That price and option are not universal.

Who should watch it—and what to expect
Choose Locke if you like dialogue-driven dramas, moral dilemmas, contained films or performances built on small changes in expression and voice. Its roughly 84-minute length makes it a compact watch, but its tension is emotional rather than action-driven. Nearly the entire film stays in the car, and the plot moves through phone conversations rather than visible set pieces. Viewers expecting a chase movie or a fast-paced thriller may find the form too quiet.
It is also an adult drama, not a family-friendly free-film pick. The BBFC classification cites very strong language and notes references to a one-night stand, an unborn baby in distress and an urgent Caesarean. Those elements contribute to the film’s stressful subject matter.
If a YouTube listing is unavailable where you live, use a legitimate local rental or subscription listing rather than assuming a result from another country will work. Locke is worth seeking out for Hardy’s focused performance and the way a single car becomes enough space for a whole drama—but only if a tense, talk-heavy film is what you want to watch.
