Its awards were best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay, best supporting actor for Sean Penn, film editing and casting. The casting award was the Academy’s first in that category.

What is the screenplay adapted from?
The Guardian describes the film as a loose adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. “Loose” matters: the source does not characterize the film as a faithful or direct retelling. The novel provides context for the adapted-screenplay category, but the Oscar result stands on its own.
