The “divided” label refers to a selection of posts shared after critics’ screenings—not a poll, a representative sample or proof that critics or audiences were evenly split.
What “divided” means in the Red One reactions
A November 4, 2024, CinemaBlend report collected sharply contrasting early comments. Its examples show that individual viewers responded differently to the film’s broad holiday-action tone; they do not establish how the general public felt. The report’s question of whether the movie was “truly naughty or absolutely nice” is a playful description of those contrasting posts, not a measured audience result. CinemaBlend
The criticism: humor, visuals and action
Film critic Matt Neglia wrote, “Putting RED ONE on the naughty list for 2024. Unfunny and visually repulsive, even the action lacks excitement & entertainment.” That is one critic’s reaction, not a consensus finding. It captures the complaints about comedy, visual style and action that appeared among the early responses quoted in the report. CinemaBlend
The praise: cast, Christmas fun and fantasy
Mike Reyes, a CinemaBlend contributor, called it “a holly jolly throw down that pleasantly surprised me,” and praised Chris Evans’s performance and the film’s espionage-flavored holiday-adventure feel. Critic Kevin Fenix described it as “pure Christmas magic,” praising its world-building and Dwayne Johnson’s emotional performance. These are enthusiastic individual responses, not evidence that viewers broadly agreed. CinemaBlend

Why the film prompted different reactions
Red One is a 2024 holiday action-adventure comedy directed by Jake Kasdan. Johnson plays Callum Drift, head of North Pole security; Evans plays Jack O’Malley, who is recruited to help rescue Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons, after his kidnapping. The premise combines Christmas fantasy with action spectacle, so reactions could turn on whether that oversized blend felt entertaining or excessive. Philstar Associated Press
The early reactions differ along a few clear lines:
Rank #2
- Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray TV Shows
- Tone: Reyes enjoyed the exuberant holiday-action approach; Neglia found the humor and action unappealing.
- Fantasy world: Fenix valued the mythology and world-building, while later reviews criticized the film’s elaborate, effects-heavy execution.
- Performances and balance: Reyes singled out Evans and Fenix praised Johnson’s emotional performance; the negative responses suggest that cast appeal did not overcome concerns about comedy, visuals or overall execution for everyone.
How the early posts compare with published reviews
The initial social posts should be kept distinct from reviews published after the film’s release. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave the movie a negative assessment, criticizing its effects-heavy spectacle and elaborate world-building. The Associated Press’s Jake Coyle likewise criticized its execution, describing it as a high-budget attempt to expand the Christmas movie. These are attributed critical judgments, not objective measurements of audience response. The Guardian Associated Press
The release was staggered across markets: the Guardian listed November 6, 2024, for the UK, November 14 for Australia and November 15 for the US. Philstar reported a Philippine theatrical date of November 13, 2024. Those are historical cinema dates, not information about where the film can be watched now. The Guardian also mentions a fictional plot detail that the naughty-list total is up by more than 20%; that number belongs to the story, not to real-world reception data. The Guardian Philstar

What the reactions can—and cannot—tell you
The early comments are useful as examples of what some people liked or disliked: praise centered on the cast, holiday fun and imagined mythology; criticism focused on humor, visuals, action and tonal choices. They cannot tell you what proportion of critics or moviegoers held either view. The sources cited here provide no named statistic measuring social-media or audience sentiment, so the posts should not be converted into a percentage or described as evenly split.
