What happened to Suni Lee?

Lee said that the illness began affecting her in February 2023, when her face, hands, ankles and feet started to swell. The swelling persisted and led her to seek medical care. Public reports describe the condition as debilitating enough to take her away from normal gymnastics training and disrupt her college-gymnastics season.

Lee has spoken about how frightening that interruption was. At the time, she was not simply recovering from an ordinary training setback; she was unsure whether her body would allow her to compete at the level required for the Olympics. Reports described her questioning whether she would ever be the same athlete again.

The publicly available accounts do not establish a complete list of her symptoms. They do not, for example, document her urine findings, blood-pressure readings, kidney-function measurements, biopsy results or a particular disease stage. Those details should not be filled in through speculation.

What kidney disease does Suni Lee have?

The most accurate answer is that the exact diagnoses remain private. Lee has said that doctors diagnosed her with two kidney diseases, but she has not named them publicly. The American Kidney Fund described her condition as kidney disease of unknown origin in its announcement of a 2024 partnership with Lee.

That wording does not establish a specific disease. It also does not justify identifying her condition as lupus nephritis, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, minimal-change disease, nephrotic syndrome or any other named disorder. None of those diagnoses was established by the authoritative material reviewed for this article.

“Unknown origin” means that the cause has not been identified in the public account; it is not a diagnosis that readers can use to infer what Lee has. In kidney medicine, determining a cause can involve additional blood and urine testing, imaging, a kidney biopsy, genetic testing or specialist evaluation. The American Kidney Fund discusses those possibilities in its general educational materials, but they are not a description of Lee’s personal medical workup.

Why the word “incurable” needs context

Some coverage has described Lee’s kidney disease as “incurable.” That word may reflect how a chronic or non-curable condition has been discussed publicly, but it is not a precise diagnosis or a complete prognosis.

Lee has described her condition as being in remission. In general, remission means that signs or activity of a disease have reduced or become controlled. It does not automatically mean the disease has been eliminated, that treatment is no longer necessary or that it cannot recur. Lee’s specific long-term prognosis has not been publicly detailed.

There is also a small difference in the timing reported by various outlets: NBC Sports described Lee as reaching remission in late 2023, while other reporting placed a remission update in April 2024. In September 2025, Lee again said that her body was in remission. The careful wording is therefore: Lee has publicly reported remission at several points, with the latest located update dating to September 2025.

What treatment has Lee described?

Lee has not released a complete treatment plan, medication list or set of medical results. Public reporting does indicate that medication was central to stabilizing her condition. NBC Sports reported that she developed a medication routine and that her visits to Mayo Clinic became less frequent—moving from approximately monthly appointments to visits every three months.

Infusions were also part of the early treatment period or were being given more frequently at that stage. In January 2024, Lee reportedly said her doctor told her that the medications were working and that she would not need infusions as often.

These are details of Lee’s reported experience, not a treatment plan for other people. Kidney-disease treatment depends on the cause, severity, kidney function, other health conditions and the treating clinician’s assessment. A medication or infusion that is appropriate for one patient may be inappropriate for another.

How the illness affected her gymnastics career

Lee was sidelined for months during early 2023 and again spent several months away from training later that year. The illness interrupted her college season and put her elite-gymnastics future in doubt.

By January 2024, doctors had cleared her to return to training. Her comeback was cautious and medically monitored rather than an immediate return to full competition. As her condition stabilized and her training progressed, she moved back into contention for the U.S. Olympic team.

Lee qualified for the 2024 Paris team at the U.S. Olympic Trials. At the Games, she won three medals: team-all-around gold, individual all-around bronze and uneven-bars bronze. Those results made the comeback one of the defining athletic stories of the Paris Olympics.

Her medals show what Lee achieved after a serious health disruption. They do not show that kidney disease had disappeared, and they should not be used as evidence that intense exercise is safe or suitable for every person with kidney disease. Exercise decisions should be made with a qualified medical team.

Lee’s latest public health update

The latest public update located for this article is from September 10–11, 2025. Lee said that her body was in remission and that she was doing well. She attributed feeling better in part to having less stress and not needing to compete every week.

Because no newer authoritative health update was located in the research for this article, it would be inaccurate to state without qualification that she is “currently” in remission. The defensible statement is that in her latest located public update, from September 2025, Lee said her body was in remission.

Why Suni Lee partnered with the American Kidney Fund

On July 9, 2024, the American Kidney Fund announced a partnership with Lee for its Know Your Kidneys initiative. The partnership was intended to raise awareness of kidney disease of unknown origin and encourage people who are looking for answers to become informed self-advocates.

The organization’s Know Your Cause materials provide general information about possible causes of kidney disease, questions patients can discuss with clinicians, testing options, genetic counseling and clinical trials. Its Unknown Causes of Kidney Disease Project emphasizes that identifying the root cause can affect treatment decisions and may help determine whether genetic testing or further specialist evaluation could be useful.

What readers should—and should not—take from her story

Lee’s experience illustrates how difficult it can be to live with a serious condition before its cause is fully understood. It also shows why patients may need to ask questions, seek specialist care and participate actively in decisions about testing and treatment.

But her story does not reveal a universal treatment path. The public record does not identify her diseases, kidney-function results, biopsy findings, complete medication regimen, dietary instructions or exercise restrictions. It therefore cannot tell another patient what treatment to pursue, what foods to avoid or whether a particular training schedule is safe.

For readers who want to learn more about the athlete beyond the medical headlines, Suni Lee: The Journey of a Gymnast Who Never Gave Up is a children’s biography about her athletic journey, Olympic success, family, identity and resilience. It should be understood as a biography—not as a medical memoir or a definitive explanation of her kidney disease.

Lee has protected important details of her health while sharing enough of her experience to help others feel less alone. The facts that are public are already significant: a 2023 diagnosis disrupted her career, treatment helped stabilize her condition, doctors cleared her to train, and she returned to the Olympics. The details that remain private should stay private unless Lee or her medical team chooses to disclose them.
