Spoiler warning: Yes—Tanjiro Kamado briefly becomes a demon near the end of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga. Muzan Kibutsuji transforms him during the final battle, but Tanjiro does not remain a demon. He is eventually restored to human form.
Does Tanjiro become a demon permanently?
No. Tanjiro’s transformation is temporary and occurs during the manga’s concluding conflict. It is not a permanent change of identity, and Tanjiro does not take Muzan’s place as the series’ lasting Demon King.
The distinction matters because the transformation is one of the story’s final crises—not the ending of Tanjiro’s character arc. After becoming human again, Tanjiro’s story does not conclude with him living as a demon.

When does Tanjiro become a demon?
Tanjiro becomes a demon during the final fight with Muzan. By that point, Tanjiro has suffered fatal injuries while helping fight Muzan and dies as the battle reaches its conclusion. With his remaining power, Muzan transforms Tanjiro, attempting to preserve his influence by creating a successor.
This event belongs to the manga’s final material. The anime adaptation has been released in arcs, and the official English anime portal lists the television story through the Hashira Training Arc while identifying Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle as a production-confirmed trilogy. Viewers who have watched only the earlier anime arcs may not have reached Tanjiro’s transformation yet.
What happens when Tanjiro becomes a demon?
Tanjiro initially becomes dangerous and hostile. He attacks people around him, including former allies, which creates an especially painful reversal: the character who spent the series protecting others now has to be stopped and saved by them.
Rank #2
However, the story does not present this as Tanjiro freely choosing evil or willingly abandoning his values. Muzan causes the transformation, and Tanjiro’s demon state is tied to Muzan’s influence. The danger is real, but it is not treated as proof that Tanjiro’s humanity has permanently disappeared.

Tanjiro eventually resists the effects of the transformation. During the concluding sequence, he receives treatment that returns him to human form. The demon phase is therefore brief and functions as a final test of whether Tanjiro’s humanity can survive the same curse he has spent the series trying to overcome.
Why Tanjiro becoming a demon matters
The twist mirrors the premise that drives Tanjiro’s journey. At the beginning of the series, Nezuko is turned into a demon, and Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps in the hope of restoring his sister. The official character premise presents that rescue mission as one of the central reasons he enters the Corps.
Rank #3
Near the ending, the roles are reversed:
- At the start: Tanjiro is a human trying to save his demonized sister, Nezuko.
- At the climax: Tanjiro becomes a demon and must be saved by the people who care about him.
- At the resolution: Tanjiro returns to human form rather than remaining trapped in demonhood.
That reversal brings the series’ central question directly to its hero: can a person retain their humanity after becoming a demon? Tanjiro’s recovery provides the story’s answer. His humanity is threatened, but it is not erased permanently.
Is Tanjiro evil as a demon?
Tanjiro is temporarily aggressive and attacks people, so his transformation has serious consequences. But describing him as permanently evil misses the point of the ending. Muzan transforms him against his will, and the narrative frames the demon state as an imposed corruption that Tanjiro and his allies must overcome.
Tanjiro’s demon form should therefore be understood as a temporary loss of control and a final struggle for his identity—not as a decision to become Muzan’s successor or a permanent betrayal of the Demon Slayer Corps.
Does Tanjiro stay human after the ending?
Yes. Tanjiro is restored to human form after the final battle. He does not remain a demon, and the manga’s ending does not leave him as the new Demon King.
Want the complete ending?
If you want to read the final battle and Tanjiro’s transformation in context, the official VIZ catalog identifies the manga as complete and lists a Demon Slayer manga complete box set. Check the edition and availability for your region before buying.
Bottom line
Tanjiro does become a demon, but only briefly. Muzan transforms him after the final battle, Tanjiro becomes dangerous under Muzan’s influence, and his allies help bring him back. He is ultimately restored to human form and does not remain a demon permanently.
