OK Jaanu is not a wholly separate musical score from O Kadhal Kanmani: contemporary reviewers identify several melodies carried over into the Hindi soundtrack, with Gulzar supplying Hindi lyrics and the track selection introducing further changes. The result is an adaptation, not an identical album—and critics disagreed about how successfully it captured the Tamil release’s appeal.
Is the OK Jaanu soundtrack the same as O Kadhal Kanmani?
No. The two soundtracks share musical material, but the Hindi album has its own lyrics, performances, track choices and treatments. Writing in Scroll on January 8, 2017, Manish Gaekwad described A. R. Rahman as repackaging tunes from O Kadhal Kanmani with Hindi lyrics by Gulzar. He specifically linked “OK Jaanu” to “Mental Manadhil” and “Kaara Fankaara” to “Kaara Aattakkaara.”
Those connections make the Hindi album a substantial adaptation rather than a track-for-track duplicate. They also do not, by themselves, settle whether one version is better: wording that works in one language may need different images or phrasing in another.
Which songs were carried over or changed?
Music Aloud’s January 6, 2017 review counted five of the eight Hindi tracks as reusing tunes. That is the reviewer’s comparative count, not an independently verified musical audit. The reviews offer useful song-level examples, but not a complete, authoritative mapping of every arrangement and melody.

Gulzar is credited as lyricist on the Bollywood Hungama song entries, while Rahman is credited for the music. The Hindi lyrics sit over musical material that some reviewers connect to Tamil originals, so the adaptation involves fitting new words and meanings to existing musical phrasing. A different verbal image or stress pattern can reflect the demands of translation and songwriting; it is not proof of weaker writing.

The available reviews do not provide a full, line-by-line comparison of Gulzar’s lyrics with the Tamil words. A close verdict on every translation choice would therefore go beyond what these sources establish.

The change in language and performance is part of what distinguishes the Hindi release from its Tamil source. The cited reviews do not establish a single, track-by-track account of how every singer or rap section changes the character of the corresponding Tamil version, so it is better not to generalize about those differences.
How did critics rate the soundtrack?
Reviews published within days of the film’s January 2017 release reached different conclusions. Music Aloud rated the album 3/5, recommending “Sunn Bhavra,” “Saajan Aayo Re” and “Kaara Fankaara,” while arguing that the remake recovered the original’s magic only on a couple of occasions. Joginder Tuteja’s January 10 review for Bollywood Hungama called the album well-rounded and highlighted “The Humma Song,” “OK Jaanu,” “Enna Sona” and “Kaara Fankaara.” These are individual critical judgments, not evidence of a consensus among listeners.
