Natalie “Nadya” Suleman, widely known by the media nickname “Octomom,” is the mother of 14 children: six older children and the octuplets she gave birth to in Bellflower, California, on January 26, 2009. The octuplets were conceived through IVF after six embryos were transferred and two of those embryos divided. The pregnancy, the fertility treatment, and the family’s sudden exposure to worldwide scrutiny made Suleman one of the most discussed figures in modern reproductive-health and tabloid history.
As of August 11, 2026, the octuplets are 17 and Suleman’s six older children are approximately 18 to 25, although exact ages depend on individual birthdays that are not consistently documented by authoritative public sources. The family has largely stepped away from the spotlight, while Lifetime’s 2025 film and documentary revisited Suleman’s story from her perspective.
Who is Nadya Suleman?
Nadya Suleman is the name under which Natalie Suleman became internationally known after giving birth to eight babies in one pregnancy. “Octomom” was a media nickname, not her complete identity, and recent Lifetime and mainstream coverage has used both Natalie Suleman and Nadya Suleman. A fair description is therefore Natalie “Nadya” Suleman on first reference, followed by the name used by the particular source or current context.
Her case drew attention for several reasons at once: she was a single mother who already had six children, the octuplets were born prematurely, the pregnancy followed IVF, and the number of embryos transferred raised questions about fertility-treatment practice. Early coverage also focused on public assistance, medical costs, household resources, and whether the children’s interests had been sufficiently considered before the treatment took place.

The public record does not support treating Suleman’s family as a simple celebrity spectacle. It contains documented medical-board action and bankruptcy filings, but also conflicting accounts from Suleman and her fertility doctor, allegations that were investigated by child-welfare officials, and Suleman’s own description of the psychological damage caused by the publicity. Those categories should be kept separate.
How many children does Nadya Suleman have?
Suleman has 14 children in total:
- Six older children: Elijah, Amerah, Joshua, Aidan, and twins Calyssa and Caleb.
- Eight younger children: the octuplets Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Makai, Josiah, Jeremiah, and Jonah.
These names are the spellings most commonly used in stronger public reporting, but older coverage contains variations such as Malia or Maliyah, Nariah or Nariyah, and Mccai or Makai. The family count and broad chronology are well established; exact birth dates, current living arrangements, schooling, employment, medical information, and personal relationships for each child are not uniformly documented and should not be presented as settled fact.
The six older children
The six older children were born before the octuplets and were also conceived through IVF, according to public reporting. They are publicly identified as Elijah, Amerah, Joshua, Aidan, and twins Calyssa and Caleb. In 2025, Lifetime described the six as ranging from 17 to 23. By August 11, 2026, that places them approximately between 18 and 25, depending on their birthdays.
The octuplets
The eight octuplets are commonly identified as Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Makai, Josiah, Jeremiah, and Jonah. They turned 16 in January 2025 and were 17 as of the dossier’s current date of August 11, 2026.

Several were minors during the period of greatest media attention, and some remain young adults. The responsible, documented information concerns their place in the family and the historical significance of their birth—not rumors about their private lives or claims about their health, schooling, relationships, or careers.
When and where were the octuplets born?
The octuplets were born in Bellflower, California, on January 26, 2009. They were premature infants and required intensive medical care after birth. Their survival became a major part of the public story.
Guinness World Records identifies the Suleman octuplets as the longest-surviving octuplets. Another careful description is that they were the first surviving set of octuplets in the United States. They should not be called the first octuplets ever born alive: Guinness distinguishes earlier octuplet births and records the Suleman children specifically through their survival record.
How were Nadya Suleman’s octuplets conceived?
The octuplets were conceived through in-vitro fertilization. The published medical and historical account says that six embryos were transferred and that two embryos later divided. That combination produced eight fetuses:

- Six embryos were transferred during an IVF procedure.
- Two of those embryos divided, creating additional embryos.
- The resulting pregnancy developed into eight fetuses.
This distinction matters. The public record does not describe eight embryos being deliberately transferred. Six embryos became eight because of embryo splitting. At the same time, transferring six embryos was itself central to the controversy, particularly because Suleman was 33 and already had six children conceived through IVF.

Why was the IVF treatment controversial?
The controversy centered on the number of embryos transferred, the physician’s responsibilities, and the foreseeable demands of a high-order multiple pregnancy. Contemporary reporting compared the procedure with guidance from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommending no more than two embryos for a woman under 35 in the relevant treatment context.
That comparison does not resolve every question about what happened. Suleman and her fertility doctor, Michael Kamrava, gave conflicting accounts in contemporaneous coverage. The ethical dispute involved both the decision to transfer multiple embryos and the broader responsibility of fertility specialists to consider the welfare of a prospective child, existing children, and the patient.
Academic analysis of the case has treated it as an assisted-reproduction ethics case based on the publicly available record. That is different from claiming that every disputed detail was conclusively established in the same way or that the public has a complete account of every private conversation between Suleman and Kamrava.
What happened to the fertility doctor?
The Medical Board of California found that Kamrava had mishandled Suleman’s treatment and the treatment of another patient. His medical license was revoked in July 2011. Later attempts to have the license reinstated were denied, according to retrospective reporting by ABC News.
The board action is a documented professional proceeding, but it should not be expanded into an unsupported claim about every allegation made during the controversy. The safest summary is that the state medical board took disciplinary action over his treatment practices, while Suleman’s and Kamrava’s accounts of the procedure and their communications differed.
Why did the family become such a media controversy?
The story combined several issues that attracted unusually intense scrutiny:
- The size of the family: Suleman already had six children when she became pregnant with eight more.
- The fertility treatment: The number of embryos transferred was viewed by critics as inconsistent with prevailing professional guidance for a patient under 35.
- The medical risks: Eight premature babies in one pregnancy required extensive neonatal care.
- Money and public support: Early coverage questioned how the family would meet its expenses and focused on public assistance and the cost of medical care.
- Questions about children’s welfare: Commentators debated whether the treatment decision adequately accounted for the needs of the children already in the family and the eight babies who were expected.
In 2012, Suleman filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, listing substantial debts and limited assets. That filing became another major part of the public narrative, but it describes her financial position at that time; it should not be used to claim that her finances remain the same today.

Were there child-neglect investigations?
During the height of the publicity, allegations of child neglect prompted visits from police and California child-welfare officials. ABC News reported that officials found the children safe and did not identify the extraordinary conditions described in some of the publicity.
That finding should be stated precisely. It does not mean that every criticism of the household was false, nor does it prove that the family’s circumstances were easy. It means that the officials’ reported assessment did not substantiate the extreme conditions being alleged at the time.

How did Suleman describe the publicity?
Suleman later said that the media attention, public condemnation, and death threats were traumatic. In a 2025 ABC News interview, she said she had undergone treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. She also rejected the idea that she had pursued the pregnancy in order to become famous.
Those points are Suleman’s own statements and should be attributed to her. They provide important context for understanding why the family later sought distance from the “Octomom” label, but they do not erase the documented medical, financial, and ethical questions surrounding the case.

What is known about the family today?
The family’s public profile changed as the children grew up. Lifetime described the family in 2025 as having been largely out of the public eye. Its documentary followed Suleman and all 14 children while also covering her transition into grandmotherhood. The children were presented as wanting to move beyond the “Octomom” identity rather than remain defined by a nickname created during their infancy.
In September 2024, Suleman announced that she had become a grandmother. ABC News reported that she shared the announcement in an Instagram post and described the baby as her first grandchild. The announcement is a public family milestone, but the grandchild’s identifying details should remain private unless the family clearly and authoritatively chooses to make them public.
Beyond those broad facts, reliable public sources do not provide a complete, current biography of each of the 14 children. Their ages, living situations, occupations, education, health, and online activity may change, and many of those details are private. A responsible article should not fill those gaps with tabloid claims, anonymous posts, paternity speculation, or social-media rumor.

I Was Octomom: The Natalie Suleman Story
Lifetime released I Was Octomom: The Natalie Suleman Story, a scripted biographical film, in March 2025. Lifetime’s synopsis says the story begins with Suleman deciding to undergo what she understood to be one final IVF procedure and follows the consequences of becoming a mother of 14 while facing tabloid scrutiny.

That makes it a significant source for understanding how she wants the story framed, but it is still a dramatization. Confessions of Octomom
In 2025, Lifetime also presented Confessions of Octomom, a six-part documentary project. Its description follows Suleman, her 14 children, and her transition into grandmotherhood after years of relative privacy. The documentary is especially relevant to the family’s present-day image because it addresses the children’s desire to move past the label that dominated coverage of them as babies.

What should readers be cautious about in older “Octomom” coverage?
Much of the most widely circulated coverage was produced when the children were babies and when the story was being treated as a daily tabloid event. Older articles often blend confirmed facts, criticism, anonymous claims, and speculation. The following distinctions help:

For readers interested in the medical-ethics debate rather than celebrity coverage alone, Judging Octomom: Ethics of In Vitro Fertilization is a relevant academic case analysis. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nadya Suleman still called Octomom?
“Octomom” remains the widely recognized media nickname, but it is not her full identity. Recent coverage uses Natalie Suleman or Nadya Suleman, and the nickname should be placed in quotation marks on first reference rather than used as though it were her name.
Did Nadya Suleman have 14 babies at once?
No. She had six older children before giving birth to the eight octuplets. The octuplets were conceived through IVF after six embryos were transferred; two embryos divided, producing eight fetuses.
Are Suleman’s children the first octuplets ever born alive?
No. Guinness World Records distinguishes earlier octuplet births and identifies the Suleman children as the longest-surviving octuplets. They can also be described as the first surviving set of octuplets in the United States.
Are all 14 of Suleman’s children in Lifetime’s documentary?
Lifetime’s 2025 description says that Confessions of Octomom follows Suleman and all 14 children. Their participation should not be used to infer that every private detail about them is publicly documented or that they share identical experiences.
The Bottom Line
Nadya Suleman is the mother of 14 children, including the octuplets born in California on January 26, 2009. Their birth created a lasting record and an unusually complicated public debate about IVF, medical responsibility, finances, privacy, and media ethics. The family’s story has since moved beyond the “Octomom” headline: the children are now young adults, Suleman has become a grandmother, and Lifetime’s 2025 projects offer a later perspective—but not a reason to treat dramatization or speculation as historical fact.
