OceanGate Expeditions’ 8K video of the Titanic wreck, released on August 30, 2022, made the portside anchor’s maker inscription unusually clear: Noah Hingley & Sons Ltd. The short clip also shows recognizable ship features and damage, including rail that has fallen away. Its images offer material for future comparisons, but they do not establish a measured rate of the wreck’s decay.
What the 2022 video shows
OceanGate said the footage was captured during its 2022 Titanic Expedition and released the 8K clip on August 30, 2022. Smithsonian Magazine described it as about one minute long. The release highlighted the bow, portside anchor, hull number one, anchor chain, number one cargo hold and bronze capstans.

Other visible features include an anchor-deployment crane, a fallen single-ended boiler and rail that had collapsed and fallen away. These views give the clip both a historical and documentary value: viewers can inspect parts of the wreck in detail, while researchers may be able to compare imagery with later documentation.
Why the anchor inscription stands out
The clearest newly legible detail singled out by the expedition was the maker’s name on the portside anchor: Noah Hingley & Sons Ltd. Titanic expert Rory Golden said he had not previously seen the inscription so clearly. The release also reported that each anchor-chain link weighs about 200 pounds, or nearly 91 kilograms.

The green points visible beside the anchor are laser scaling lights, not markings on the ship. According to OceanGate, they are 10 centimeters apart, giving viewers a reference for judging the size of nearby features.
Expert identifications in the footage
PH Nargeolet, a veteran Nautile submersible pilot and Titanic diver, identified several features in the imagery. These are identifications reported by the expedition, rather than an independent analysis of the video.

- Anchor-deployment crane: the crane used to lower the anchor.
- Mast shackle: a shackle originally attached to the main mast, which has since collapsed.
- Triple fairleads: three round structures along the inside of the railing, used to guide docking ropes.
What the footage can—and cannot—say about deterioration
OceanGate presented repeat imagery as a way to document wreck features and marine life and to compare the Titanic’s condition over time. The expedition reported slight changes in some areas relative to 2021 footage and pointed to damaged rail. The wreck lies about 3,800 meters beneath the ocean surface, according to ABC News Australia’s 2022 report.
Those observations indicate visible change, but the cited accounts do not report a quantified decay rate derived from the 8K clip. A reliable assessment of change over time would require comparisons across imagery collected at different dates; this release was documentation that could support such work, not a completed measurement of long-term deterioration. The wreck was identified in 1985, according to GeekWire’s contemporary report.
