If OBS is not reconnecting to YouTube, first identify which of three failures you have: OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting, OBS cannot start sending, or OBS stays connected while YouTube marks the stream unhealthy or ended. Check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators, then open the stream’s status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The right fix depends on the error shown; a reconnect setting alone cannot resolve every cause.
Diagnose the failure before changing settings
OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects
The OBS Project says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Intermittent disconnections and dropped frames typically point to a network issue between the computer and the ingest server. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
OBS will not start sending
Check whether the selected YouTube event, server URL, and stream key are correct. If YouTube reports an encoder or key error, follow that message rather than treating it as a dropped-frame problem.
OBS is connected, but YouTube reports a problem
In YouTube Studio, open the stream in Live Control Room and read its stream-health status. YouTube says the status includes specific error messages and instructions; use the message to choose the relevant fix. See YouTube’s stream health guidance.

Fix unstable connection and dropped frames
Reduce the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
-
Check the OBS dropped-frame counter and connection indicator while the stream is running.
-
Test upload speed and, more importantly, whether it remains stable under load. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed as a heuristic, not a guarantee. A speed test is only a snapshot; other devices, Wi-Fi interference, and changes in the route to YouTube can reduce usable capacity.
-
In OBS, open Settings > Output and reduce the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Keep audio bitrate separate from video bitrate. Choose a setting that remains stable rather than one that only works at the best moment.
-
Use YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate recommendations as a reference, not a promise that your network can carry that bitrate. For example, YouTube recommends H.264 video at 8 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations; the usable bitrate depends on your actual connection. The full, current guidance is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Test the network path
-
If you stream over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed repair.

If OBS offers another ingest server, try it and compare connection stability.
-
Restart the modem or router if other services are also having connectivity trouble. OBS lists cables, network cards, routers, switches, and extenders as possible fault points; isolate the problem before replacing hardware. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve a route or connectivity issue.
Check software and network settings
-
Temporarily test without a VPN. If the problem disappears, investigate the VPN route or configuration rather than leaving it off without considering your privacy and security needs.

Keep OBS’s network binding at Default. On Windows, OBS recommends testing Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. IPv4-only is a troubleshooting experiment; return to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference.
-
Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to help keep a stream connected when bandwidth fluctuates. It is a fallback, not a fix for the underlying network problem.

Fix a stream that will not start: check YouTube’s key and server
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or public logs. YouTube explains encoder setup in its Live streaming encoder setup instructions.
-
In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then select the intended stream in Live Control Room.
-
Copy the server URL and stream key for that stream, and confirm OBS is using them. Make sure you have selected the correct event and key if you manage more than one stream.

Check the intended stream and event controls
Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream and that the matching key is selected. In Live Control Room, inspect that event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. When those controls are enabled, YouTube allows streaming to be started or stopped from the encoder; reused settings may copy those choices. They control the event, not OBS’s ability to recover from a computer or internet failure. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will become one complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a complete archive guarantee for one broadcast longer than 12 hours. If preserving the whole playlist broadcast as a recording matters, check YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance for the archive workflow you intend to use; do not rely on an assumed single complete VOD.

Test failover and monitor playback
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to a backup encoder. A backup only helps if it is configured and tested. YouTube also advises monitoring audio and video continuously and checking that a local archive file is growing when recording locally. These safeguards do not repair the primary connection, but they can help detect an interruption or verify that a fallback is working. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Verify encoder settings without sacrificing a stable stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its listed video codec options include H.264, H.265, and AV1. Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance, and test before relying on a long broadcast. These recommendations do not override the need for a stable upload connection.
-
Bitrate: Match the video bitrate to stable available upload capacity. Lowering it can reduce dropped frames; YouTube’s suggested values are codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific.
-
Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the encoder exposes the setting; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second recommendation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
-
Frame rate and resolution: Use a combination your computer and network can sustain. A higher resolution or frame rate is not useful if it causes repeated disconnects.
-
Test: Run a test stream and monitor both OBS and YouTube stream health before depending on the setup for a continuous playlist.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise, then it disconnects | Upload capacity or route to ingest | Lower video bitrate; test Ethernet, another ingest server, and the local network path. |
| OBS cannot connect or start sending | Server URL, stream key, or selected event | Copy the current URL and key from the intended YouTube event; update OBS if the key was reset. |
| OBS appears connected but YouTube shows an unhealthy stream | YouTube stream-health error | Read the specific Live Control Room message and follow its indicated branch. |
| The stream stops when OBS or the computer stops | Encoder and event lifecycle | Review auto-start/auto-stop for the event and whether you have a configured, tested backup encoder. |
| Connection worsens on Wi-Fi or during household network use | Wireless stability or shared upload | Test wired Ethernet and reduce bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. |
