If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube on Windows, first check the OBS status area: rising dropped frames usually points to the connection between your PC and YouTube’s ingest server, while an encoding overloaded warning or choppy output points to local rendering or encoding load. Those symptoms need different fixes. Save a log from a failed session, note what the status area shows, then work through the matching checks below instead of changing several settings at once.
First identify what is actually stopping
OBS distinguishes a stream connection problem from a performance problem. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. If the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, OBS drops frames to compensate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the session.
Before adjusting settings, note the exact error and whether the dropped-frames counter rises at the interruption. Save the OBS log for that session. One change at a time makes it easier to tell whether a test helped.
- Dropped frames rise or OBS disconnects: follow the network and bitrate checks below.
- “Encoding overloaded,” rendering lag, or locally choppy output: follow the GPU and workload checks.
- Viewers report buffering, but OBS stays connected and its dropped-frame counter is not rising: that is not the same symptom as OBS losing its connection. Check YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics rather than assuming OBS disconnected.
If dropped frames rise: check bitrate and connection
Reduce bitrate to match stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS’s connection guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Use upload capacity that remains stable under real conditions, not just a best-case speed-test result; other devices and network activity can affect what is available to the stream. Lowering bitrate can improve stability, but it also reduces picture quality.

Test another ingest server
Open Settings → Stream and try a different server if the service offers one. This is an isolation test: a different result may indicate that the route to one ingest server is involved, but changing servers does not itself repair the route to the original one. Testing another streaming service can also help distinguish a service-specific issue from a broader connection problem; it does not prove the cause on its own.
Try OBS’s Windows network options cautiously
Go to Settings → Advanced → Network. OBS lists Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing as options some users report helping; test them individually and inspect the session log rather than treating either as a guaranteed repair. Leave Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4-only, but if it makes no difference, return to the IPv4 and IPv6 default.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation
The setting “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS says this does not fix the underlying cause and that the reduced bitrate lowers picture quality. It can help manage congestion during a stream, but it is not a substitute for finding a persistent network problem.
Check Windows software and the network path
OBS identifies VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi instability, modem/router problems, and faulty network hardware as possible causes. Use reversible tests to narrow down which part of the route matters.

- VPN: if one is active, test a stream without it. A VPN changes the network route and may be part of the problem.
- Firewall or antivirus: if you suspect security software, make a temporary diagnostic test. If that confirms interference, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on; do not leave security protection disabled.
- Network utilities: check whether software is prioritizing or optimizing traffic. OBS cites Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and the Killer NIC Software Suite as examples, not an exhaustive list. Its guide recommends disabling the former option or reinstalling the latter with hardware drivers only.
- Network drivers: check for updates from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Wi-Fi: if you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test wired Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired test helps isolate the wireless connection; it does not prove the cable or another component is faulty.
- Modem/router: restart the equipment if appropriate, then retest. Contact your ISP if connection problems persist after local troubleshooting.
Do not buy a new cable, router, network card, switch, or extender as a first response. Replace a component only when testing indicates that component is faulty. If you do need a cable, match it to the available ports, connector, and required length; the OBS guidance does not require a particular cable category.
If OBS reports encoding overload: reduce local GPU load
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, explains that the GPU composites and renders scenes and can be overloaded by a game or other GPU work. Its remedies focus on reducing competing load and the amount OBS must render.

- Run OBS as administrator: close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator on Windows. Test whether the overload still occurs.
- Free GPU resources: close or reduce other GPU-intensive applications and workloads running at the same time as OBS.
- Reduce game load: cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding game graphics settings. A game producing more frames than needed can compete with OBS for GPU time.
- Lower OBS output demands: in Settings → Video, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps. This reduces rendering work at the cost of smoothness or detail.
- Simplify the scene: disable complex scenes, sources, resource-heavy filters, or browser sources one at a time, testing after each change. This helps identify a specific source of rendering load without removing everything permanently.
The OBS performance guide also discusses Windows Game Mode and Game DVR, but its advice includes Windows 10-specific distinctions. Check the Windows version and current settings before changing those options; do not apply version-specific guidance as if every Windows release behaved the same way.

- The OBS log covering the interruption.
- The exact on-screen error or status message.
- Whether dropped frames rose, and whether OBS remained connected.
- Whether a wired test or another ingest server changed the result.
- Which setting or software test you changed and what happened afterward.
The OBS symptom alone does not establish an account restriction, stream-key problem, YouTube ingest requirement, or YouTube-wide outage. Check YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics and official guidance for those YouTube-specific conditions; do not infer them solely from an OBS disconnection.
