OBS YouTube Stream Keeps Dropping Frames on JioFiber: Bitrate and Route Checks

Dropped frames do not prove JioFiber is at fault. Check bitrate against dependable upload, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and use MyJio diagnostics to narrow the cause.

If OBS keeps dropping frames while streaming to YouTube over JioFiber, first check whether your configured bitrate exceeds what your connection can sustain, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and test JioFiber’s local connection. OBS’s dropped-frame counter identifies unstable delivery or an unsustainable bitrate; it does not, by itself, prove that JioFiber or a particular route is at fault.

What dropped frames mean—and what they do not prove

The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That points to delivery between your computer and the remote ingest server, rather than necessarily to OBS itself.

The possible causes include an ambitious bitrate, Wi-Fi interference, router or device configuration, competing household uploads, VPN or security software, network drivers, the path to YouTube, or the ingest service. A dropped-frame percentage alone cannot distinguish among them. The JioFiber support material describes checks for the in-home connection, router, device and Wi-Fi; it does not diagnose the route from an individual subscriber to YouTube’s ingest servers.

Do not assume that Jio is throttling YouTube, that a named Jio route is defective, or that changing DNS or using a VPN will fix the problem. The available official guidance does not establish any of those claims for this case.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

Compare the encoder target with YouTube’s recommendations

YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance publishes the following H.264 video bitrate recommendations. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular JioFiber connection can hold the rate continuously.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 or 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Codec matters: YouTube lists different rates for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Match any comparison to your actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating one number as universal. OBS’s guide suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed. Use a stable capacity estimate, not the highest brief result from a speed test; this rule is a starting point, not a guarantee against upload dips or other devices competing for bandwidth.

Lower quality and bitrate together when needed

If the dependable upload cannot support the recommendation for your current output, reduce the video bitrate. If necessary, lower resolution or frame rate too, then test again. A lower bitrate that still tries to deliver an unnecessarily high resolution may give a poor result; choose output settings your connection can sustain. Keep the bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range when possible.

OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, which may prevent some interruptions at the cost of image quality. It is a fallback mitigation, not a fix for the underlying instability.

Check the delivery settings that affect a YouTube stream

  • Protocol: YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. Check that the selected codec is supported by your YouTube workflow and use its corresponding bitrate guidance.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. If drops persist, testing a lower frame rate can reduce the demands on your connection.

Check the current YouTube guidance and the options in your installed OBS version, since encoder labels and available choices can vary.

Run controlled tests to find where the problem is

Change one condition at a time and keep the other stream settings and test duration as similar as practical. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a representative test with motion and audio similar to the real programme, and monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS.

  1. Capture a baseline. Record the dropped-frame percentage and when it occurs. Note the output resolution, frame rate, codec, video bitrate, whether the computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and any YouTube stream-health messages.
  2. Test a more conservative bitrate. Compare the configured bitrate with the recommendation for your codec and output, and with dependable upload capacity. Lower the bitrate if it is too close to the connection’s limit; lower resolution or frame rate too if needed. Repeat the representative test and record the result.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and repeat without changing the stream settings. If the result improves, the local wireless segment or its conditions are implicated. That does not prove the wider JioFiber-to-YouTube route is fault-free. An Ethernet cable is useful only if you need one to perform this comparison.
  4. Run MyJio diagnostics. In the MyJio app, open Home and JioCare, then select Run Diagnostics. Jio says the tool checks connection health, router status, device configuration, Wi-Fi strength and connectivity, then presents guided actions. Follow the account-specific prompts for steps such as restarting the router, checking cables or settings, or improving Wi-Fi coverage.
  5. Compare another streaming destination. Using equivalent practical settings, test a different service. OBS recommends this comparison to help identify whether a problem may be service-specific. If another destination works, that is a reason to investigate the YouTube path or ingest further—not proof of a route fault and not a fix for the original stream.
  6. Isolate local software or network settings. OBS lists VPNs, security software, bundled network-priority software and outdated network drivers among possible sources of interference. Test one change at a time, and restore security protections afterward. Get driver updates from your device or motherboard maker. OBS also describes Windows network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report can help; leave Bind to IP at Default. Its guide documents IPv4-only as a test, but advises returning to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference.

When to contact JioFiber support

If dropped frames continue over wired Ethernet, at a conservative bitrate your connection should support, and across repeated representative tests, preserve your OBS log and note the timestamps. Contact JioFiber support, describe the conditions and results, and ask them to check the line or service. Jio’s Run Diagnostics support page explains the app’s guided checks and service-request path. OBS also advises contacting the ISP when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve persistent dropped frames.

Useful evidence to provide includes your location, plan upload rate, stream settings, timestamps, OBS log, wired-versus-wireless results and whether another streaming destination behaved differently. These details help narrow the fault domain; without them, there is not enough evidence to identify an individual route issue.
