To loop a finished guided body scan continuously into YouTube Live, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before the input file, pace the file with -re, encode in a format YouTube accepts, and send the output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Test the whole chain before going live; a looping command does not guarantee a stable connection, a single uninterrupted archive, or monetization eligibility.

What the loop options do

-stream_loop is an input option, so place it before the -i for the file you want to repeat. Its value -1 means loop indefinitely. For a file being sent as a live stream, -re reads the input at its native rate rather than consuming it as quickly as possible. These options are distinct from FFplay’s playback option -loop; this workflow uses FFmpeg to encode and transmit a live feed.

For one file containing both the meditation video and its audio, the basic shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "body-scan.mp4" [encoding options] -f flv "RTMP(S) destination"

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop and -re in its command-line documentation. The exact output settings depend on the file, target resolution and frame rate, and YouTube’s currently selected ingestion method.

Prepare the meditation file and stream

Check the source before encoding

Confirm what streams the file contains before choosing a command. The example below assumes a single file with both video and audio. If audio is a separate file, it is a separate finite input: apply looping to that input too, or the video may continue while the narration or music ends. A video-only source will not provide meditation audio unless you add and map an audio input. Likewise, an audio-only file needs a compatible visual source if the YouTube broadcast is expected to include video.

Other cases may require different handling: a still image or slideshow needs a video-generation input rather than ordinary video-file assumptions; separate narration and music need deliberate stream mapping and mixing; and variable-frame-rate footage may need a defined output frame rate. Inspect the inputs and adapt the command rather than assuming a loop option alone solves these differences.

Create or select the YouTube Live event

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy the server URL and stream key provided for the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow. The stream key is a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a shared script or log. Keep it out of shell history where possible, and replace it in the command below only in a private environment.

Use YouTube-compatible output settings

This illustrative command assumes a combined audio/video file, 30 fps output, H.264 video, AAC audio, and RTMP-compatible FLV output. It is a starting point, not a tested or universal command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "body-scan.mp4" \
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage \
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 \
  -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k \
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 \
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -r 30 sets the output frame rate to 30 fps. The example’s -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 correspond to a 60-frame, two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP/keyframe cadence to match.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set the example video bitrate and rate limit; -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. The shown 4500 kbps is illustrative, not a universal YouTube recommendation.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo audio.
  • -tune stillimage may suit visuals with little movement, but a moving background or changing imagery can call for different encoding choices. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and options.
  • -f flv selects the container used in this RTMP-style example. Use an output container and protocol compatible with the ingestion method YouTube Studio specifies.

YouTube’s current live encoder settings guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for its RTMP/RTMPS guidance, up to 60 fps, CBR, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure variant of RTMP. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. For example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for H.264 at 480p30; neither value should be detached from its matching format and treated as a general recommendation.

RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are different workflows

The command above is an RTMP-compatible FLV example and should not be mixed with YouTube’s HLS requirements. YouTube documents HLS as a separate workflow using a rolling playlist, TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations from one to four seconds; its guidance notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow the endpoint and segment requirements for the ingestion method actually selected in Studio.

Start the feed, test it, and monitor health

  1. Replace the example input path with the actual media file and use the server URL and stream key YouTube Studio provides. Keep the real key private.
  2. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together, using YouTube’s current encoder table. Check that your upload connection has adequate headroom for the selected stream.
  3. Run the command and inspect FFmpeg’s output for input, encoder, or connection errors. Then check the YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that the feed arrives and the video and audio are present.
  4. Before the broadcast, test with audio and visual movement similar to what the meditation stream will contain. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
  5. During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream-health panel and FFmpeg’s logs. If YouTube reports poor health or the feed stops, diagnose the source, encoding settings, and connection rather than assuming the loop itself will restore the event.

FFmpeg’s full documentation includes an RTMP example with real-time processing and retry-related options. Such options can help with temporary failures, but they are not a guarantee that FFmpeg, the network, and the YouTube event will always reconnect successfully.

Plan for runtime, archives, rights, and monetization

Do not assume an infinite loop becomes one infinite archive

YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that a continuously looping broadcast will be preserved as one uninterrupted archive. If you need a particular viewer experience or an on-demand copy, decide whether to run a finite event, restart it intentionally, or publish a separate on-demand version, and check YouTube’s current behavior for your event.

Looping does not establish rights or monetization eligibility

Make sure you have appropriate rights to every component: the guided voice recording, music, ambient sounds, and visuals. Permission for one component does not establish rights to the others.

Copyright and monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policy was updated on July 15, 2025, to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. The policy says, “What’s important is that the substance of each video should be materially varied and deliver creative, educational, or other value.” A recording repeated continuously may be assessed in the context of the channel and the content; looping alone does not promise monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common loop and live-stream problems

  • The file plays once and ends: Check that -stream_loop -1 is before the correct -i. It is an input option and applies to the input that follows it.
  • Video keeps looping but the audio ends: Check whether audio is in the same file. If it is a separate input, loop that input too and verify that the output maps the intended audio stream.
  • There is no sound: Confirm that the source has an audio stream, that FFmpeg is mapping it, and that the YouTube preview receives it. A video-only source cannot supply narration or music by itself.
  • The stream reaches YouTube but reports poor health: Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and bitrate against the matching row in YouTube’s current settings table. Check the upload connection and leave headroom.
  • The stream does not connect: Verify the current server URL and stream key in Studio, the selected ingestion protocol, and the output container. Check FFmpeg’s error messages and YouTube’s stream-health information; do not expose the key while sharing logs.
  • The picture stutters or the audio and video drift: Check that the source can be decoded and encoded at the chosen output rate, that the machine can sustain encoding, and that separate inputs are paced and mapped appropriately. The sample command’s rate and frame settings are assumptions, not a fix for every source.
  • The feed drops and does not return: Inspect the encoder and network logs and the YouTube event state. Retry-related FFmpeg options may help in some temporary failures, but recovery is not guaranteed; confirm that the event and credentials remain valid before restarting.
