In OBS, network “Dropped Frames” usually means the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain your configured bitrate; it does not by itself show that your VPS has run out of RAM. Check which OBS counter is rising, then compare it with memory, CPU, and network evidence from the same failure window.
What OBS means by “dropped frames”
OBS reports different performance problems with separate counters. They point to different parts of the streaming chain, so identify the counter before changing bitrate, upgrading a VPS, or lowering video quality.
| OBS counter | What it indicates | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Network Dropped Frames | Frames OBS could not deliver reliably to the streaming service at the configured bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to compensate when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up. | VPS egress and route stability, bitrate headroom, and the connection to YouTube ingest. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag | OBS could not render frames on time. | Rendering workload and available CPU/GPU resources. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | The encoder could not encode frames on time. | Encoder choice, CPU or encoder capacity, and encoding workload. |
OBS Project’s Help page describes network drops as a response to an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the set bitrate: “Because of this, OBS was forced to drop some of the video frames in order to compensate.” That statement concerns connection performance; it is not evidence that RAM directly caused a network drop. OBS’s encoding performance guide explains the distinction between rendering and encoding bottlenecks.
How to tell whether the VPS is actually short of memory
Look at resource evidence from the time the counter rises, not just a later snapshot. Linux’s /proc/meminfo includes MemAvailable, an estimate of memory available for starting applications without swapping. Also check whether swap is in use and whether the system is actively swapping; swap activity can signal pressure, but swap use alone does not prove that memory caused the stream problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Inspect
/proc/meminfo, especiallyMemAvailable, during the affected interval. - Check swap use and activity, along with CPU utilization and load.
- If available on the system, inspect
/proc/pressure/memory,/proc/pressure/cpu, and/proc/pressure/iofor resource contention. - Search system logs for out-of-memory (OOM) killer events near the time OBS stalled or stopped.
The Linux kernel documents /proc information, including memory reporting, and Pressure Stall Information (PSI). The kernel’s OOM documentation describes OOM-related reporting.
Check the limit that applies to OBS
A VPS container or cgroup can have a lower memory limit than the host’s total. Host-level free memory therefore may not represent what the OBS process can use. Check the actual limit applied to the service or container and compare it with its usage and the failure timeline. The provider, operating system and kernel, container setup, OBS version, encoder, stream settings, and logs are not specified here, so there is no defensible universal minimum RAM figure or provider upgrade recommendation.

A diagnostic sequence for the next drop
- Open OBS Stats. When the problem occurs, note which field increases: Network Dropped Frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag. Record the time and save the OBS log covering that window.
- Check VPS resources at the same time. Capture
MemAvailable, swap use or activity, CPU utilization and load, and available PSI data. Check system logs for an OOM-killer event. Include the effective container or cgroup memory limit if one applies. - Match the evidence to the counter. Rising network drops with healthy memory and processing evidence point you toward connection, egress, or bitrate investigation. Rising render or encode counters call for a rendering or encoding investigation. Memory pressure, heavy swapping, or an OOM event that coincides with the failure makes memory a plausible contributor—but still does not, on its own, prove the cause of network drops.
- Change one relevant variable at a time. For network drops, test a bitrate the VPS connection can sustain and follow OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance. For render or encode lag, reduce OBS workload and assess CPU or encoder capacity. If memory pressure or an OOM event coincides with failure, reduce concurrent workload or evaluate more effective VPS memory after confirming the actual limit and allocation.
- Repeat under representative conditions. Test with the audio and video motion you expect to stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change affected the result.
Choose stream settings to fit the connection and workload
YouTube recommends selecting settings that suit a reliable upload connection, testing with representative audio and video motion, and monitoring stream health. Its recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current configuration table rather than treating one bitrate as correct for every stream: YouTube Live encoder settings.
If the evidence points to network drops, a lower bitrate can reduce the amount of data OBS must deliver, but it trades away quality and will not repair an unstable route or a provider-side egress problem. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can soften the effect of congestion by adapting bitrate, but it is not a root-cause fix. If the evidence points to rendering or encoding lag, OBS’s performance guide identifies resolution and frame rate as possible workload levers. Any reduction changes the output; test the stream you actually intend to run.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live continuously, rather than troubleshoot a camera or desktop capture in OBS, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; there is one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative for uploaded-video streaming, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix for an OBS/VPS resource or connection problem. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
