You can still let the display turn off: screen-off and computer sleep are separate settings. OBS cannot keep transmitting normally while the computer is asleep; that conclusion follows from how operating-system sleep works, rather than a specific test of every OBS and YouTube setup.
Change the sleep setting, not just the screen timeout
A screen turning off does not necessarily mean the computer has gone to sleep. For a live broadcast, the computer must stay awake so OBS can continue sending the stream. Set the sleep timeout to cover the entire session, while leaving the display timeout at your preferred setting if you do not need the screen on.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Change the sleep timeout for the power condition you will use. For a long session, choose a longer timeout or disable automatic sleep while plugged in, if that option is available.
- Adjust the screen-off timeout separately. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake.
- Run a test broadcast while plugged in and confirm that the computer stays awake for the intended duration.
These labels reflect Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance. Options can differ on Windows 10, managed computers, and systems with manufacturer-specific power controls. Microsoft: shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC.
Mac laptop
- Open System Settings > Battery.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off when the Mac is plugged in and must stay working with its display off.
- Test the setup before relying on it for a broadcast.
Apple notes that preventing sleep can increase power consumption. This option is for use on the power adapter; do not assume it will keep a laptop awake on battery. Apple: set sleep and wake settings.

If OBS disconnects while the computer stays awake
When the machine did not sleep, treat the drop as a connection problem rather than a power-setting problem. OBS lists unstable Wi-Fi, VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritization utilities, drivers, and hardware as possible sources. Work through the connection path before replacing equipment.
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and review the available network troubleshooting options.
- If you are using Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. This helps diagnose wireless instability; Ethernet does not prevent the computer from sleeping.
- Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, firewall, antivirus product, or network-prioritization utility is interfering. Check that network drivers are current and functioning.
- If the issue persists after reasonable checks, contact your ISP or investigate the relevant network hardware.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as one option for connection trouble, but it can reduce stream quality and does not fix the underlying cause. Treat it as a fallback, not as a replacement for correcting sleep settings or diagnosing a failing connection. See OBS: stream connection troubleshooting.

Use automatic reconnect as backup, not as a sleep fix
OBS has an automatic reconnect control under Settings > Advanced. It can help recover from a temporary connection loss, but it does not keep OBS transmitting while the computer sleeps. Configure it as a recovery aid, then test what happens after waking the computer; do not rely on reconnect to bridge a sleep period. See OBS: advanced settings.
