For a YouTube radio stream built from several prerecorded files, use OBS with its VLC Video source: OBS handles the broadcast scene and stream output, while the source plays your playlist. Use OBS Media Source instead if you only need to loop one file. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish that standalone VLC is a better or more reliable YouTube sender.

OBS vs VLC: which setup fits a playlist radio stream?

Need Recommended workflow Why
Loop one local file OBS Media Source It has a loop control and supports common local audio and video formats.
Play several files as a playlist OBS with VLC Video source The source supports a playlist, looping, and shuffling; OBS supplies the broadcast scene and output.
Send a stream using VLC alone Not established by the official pages cited here The available guidance documents OBS’s playlist source and YouTube’s encoder setup, but not a current end-to-end standalone VLC-to-YouTube workflow.

So this is not necessarily a choice between OBS and VLC. For multiple tracks, VLC is a dependency used by an OBS source, rather than a documented replacement for OBS’s broadcast role.

What you need before setting up

  • OBS Studio to assemble the scene and send encoded video and audio to YouTube. OBS describes scenes and sources as components of stream output (OBS Sources Guide, dated January 11, 2022).
  • VLC installed if you want to use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC (OBS Media Sources, dated January 11, 2022).
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days (Get started with live streaming).
  • Media you are authorized to broadcast. Having a file, or access to a music service, does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights that apply to your particular recordings and intended use.
  • A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen stream quality. YouTube advises matching stream quality to upload capacity and testing with audio and movement comparable to the planned broadcast (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

How to loop one file in OBS

  1. Open OBS and create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
  2. In the scene’s Sources panel, add Media Source and select the local audio or video file.
  3. Enable the source’s Loop control, then confirm the file plays and returns to the beginning as expected.
  4. Set up the rest of the scene, including any still image or other visual you want viewers to see. Check that audio is audible and not clipping before you connect to YouTube.

OBS lists common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The supported result can still depend on the file and installed environment, so test your actual media in OBS before scheduling a broadcast.

How to loop a multi-file playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast, then add VLC Video from the Sources panel.
  3. Add the media files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
  4. Choose whether to enable playlist looping or shuffling. Use the ordered playlist if sequence matters; enable shuffle only if track order is not important.
  5. Check the source’s visibility behavior, network caching, and audio track settings as relevant to your media. Confirm the selected audio track is the one you intend viewers to hear.
  6. Preview the scene and listen through transitions. Verify the playlist advances and loops before going live.

The VLC Video source’s settings and controls are documented by the OBS Project. If the source is missing, first check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.

Connect OBS to YouTube and check the broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, then configure the output settings for the quality your upload connection can sustain. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or show it in a public screen capture.
  3. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public or announcing it. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover connecting an encoder and starting the stream (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
  4. Test ahead of the intended broadcast. YouTube Help recommends, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the audio, video, playlist transitions, and stream health messages.
  5. During the stream, keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. YouTube also recommends arranging the encoder in advance, checking the preview, confirming the event is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube live streaming tips).

Audio and video settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance gives a recommended stereo audio bitrate of 128 Kbps and a recommended stereo audio sample rate of 44.1 kHz; these are YouTube settings recommendations, not a comparison of OBS and VLC performance. Its H.264 video bitrate guidance varies by resolution and frame rate, so choose the matching row in YouTube’s current settings page rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Recheck that page before a broadcast because the settings are subject to change.

Rights and continuity checks for a radio-style stream

  • Confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast every track and any accompanying visuals on YouTube. A personal purchase or subscription is not proof of live-broadcast permission.
  • Check transitions, track order, and volume across the full playlist, not just the first file.
  • Keep the stream key private. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.
  • Do not assume that an OBS playlist setting or YouTube encoder recommendation guarantees uninterrupted delivery. Test the complete path and monitor stream health once live.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is not available in OBS VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC and match 32-bit or 64-bit versions; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
Playlist stops after the last file Playlist looping is off. Open the VLC Video source settings and enable playlist looping.
Tracks play in an unexpected order Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order is wrong. Disable shuffle if sequence matters and arrange the files in the intended order.
Video reaches YouTube but audio is missing or wrong The source’s audio track or OBS audio routing may not match the file. Check the VLC Video source’s audio track setting, OBS audio meters, and the Live Control Room preview.
YouTube does not show the expected preview or reports stream issues The encoder may not be connected with the correct URL/key, or the selected quality may exceed upload capacity. Recheck the stream URL and key, lower output quality if needed, test again, and watch YouTube’s stream health messages.
Channel cannot start a live stream Live streaming may not be enabled, verification may be incomplete, or the channel may have a restriction. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and channel status.
