Choose OBS Studio if you want hands-on control over scenes, sources, audio, transitions, and plugins. Choose StreamYard if you prefer a browser-based studio with built-in guest and multistream workflows. OBS is free and open source; StreamYard offers a free plan and paid tiers with plan-specific limits. Neither product’s official descriptions establish that it is universally easier, more reliable, or better-performing.

How OBS and StreamYard differ

What matters OBS Studio StreamYard
Where you work Desktop software for Windows, macOS, and Linux; you build a production from scenes and sources. OBS Project A live video production and recording tool in a browser, with a studio workflow for bringing in guests. StreamYard Help Center
Production control Scenes, window and display captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, capture cards, audio mixing and filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, and plugin or script extensibility. Browser studio features and workflows are provided by the service; available capabilities depend on plan.
Guests and multistreaming Supports streaming platforms, but the cited OBS product information does not establish a native simultaneous-destination count. Guest-oriented workflows and paid multistreaming; stated destination limits vary by plan.
Recording Recording is a core use case alongside live streaming. The free plan has recording limits; paid plans include broadcast recordings and local recordings, subject to plan details.
Cost Free and open source. Free plan plus paid plans. Pricing and included features can change.

These are feature descriptions, not a controlled comparison of output quality, reliability, or ease of use. See the OBS Project and StreamYard’s pricing page for current product information.

Choose OBS if production control is the priority

OBS is a strong fit for creators who want to assemble a production themselves: for example, combining a camera, screen capture, titles, images, and separate audio sources, then switching between scenes with transitions or hotkeys. Audio filters, Studio Mode, Multiview, and plugins give experienced users additional options to shape a show.

  • Choose OBS when you want detailed control of sources, scene layout, audio, and transitions.
  • It suits workflows that need desktop capture, capture cards, or custom additions through plugins and scripts.
  • Expect to configure desktop software and check that your computer can handle the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity you choose.

OBS lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux on its current product page. Its separate requirements page lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland. That requirements page is dated 2021, so check the current release requirements. OBS also cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording successfully. Its Auto Configuration Wizard can help you find a starting configuration. OBS product page · OBS System Requirements

Choose StreamYard for a browser studio and guest workflow

StreamYard is a better fit when you want to produce a live show in a browser and bring guests into the studio without building the production around desktop scenes and sources. Its plans also offer multistreaming, recordings, custom RTMP destinations, local recordings, and reusable studios, with availability and limits depending on the plan.

StreamYard’s Help Center lists simultaneous destinations of three on Core, eight on Advanced, and ten on Business. These are plan limits, not a promise that every platform or destination will work in every configuration. Confirm current plan details and destination compatibility before choosing a tier. Check your computer and connection before going live

For OBS

There is no single computer specification that guarantees an OBS stream will work: demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check OBS’s current requirements for your operating system and use its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Run a private or unlisted test with the scenes and sources you actually plan to use; a simple webcam scene and a layered production can put different loads on the same machine.

For StreamYard

StreamYard recommends a current desktop browser, at least 5 Mbps upload and download, Ethernet when possible, a modern quad-core processor, and at least 4 GB of RAM, with 6–8 GB recommended. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees for every stream. The Help Center also notes browser-specific feature limitations. Confirm the current requirements and test your actual browser, camera, microphone, and network. StreamYard system requirements

Compare total cost with the workflow you need

OBS has no software subscription cost. Its trade-off is that you handle setup and production on your own computer. StreamYard’s free plan can be a way to start, but recording and other capabilities have limits; paid tiers add features such as multistreaming, with plan-specific terms and recurring costs. Compare the actual features you need—especially destination count, recording options, and guest workflow—against the current plan page rather than choosing on the headline price alone.

What about keeping a YouTube stream live 24/7?

OBS and StreamYard are production tools for live shows; the cited product information does not establish a dedicated cloud service from either one that loops uploaded videos continuously while your computer is off. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is #1 to consider: it keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.

Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
