OBS Studio is the best all-around open-source screen recorder for YouTube if you want to combine screen capture, microphone and system audio, multiple visual sources, and the option to stream from one reusable setup. ShareX is a strong Windows choice for quick, configurable captures; Kdenlive is worth considering when recording is part of an editing workflow.

Which open-source screen recorder should you choose?

Software Best fit What to know
OBS Studio A repeatable YouTube recording setup with multiple sources, scenes, audio controls, and optional streaming. Broad capabilities mean you must configure sources, audio, canvas and output settings. OBS lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer; check its download page for current requirements and Linux instructions. OBS Project · OBS Studio repository
ShareX Windows users who want fast area capture, hotkeys, and configurable post-capture actions. It is a Windows application, not a like-for-like cross-platform alternative. ShareX
Kdenlive Creators who want screen capture within a video-editing workflow. Its 26.08 manual documents ScreenGrab capture through FFmpeg and warns that screen capture with the x246-with-audio setting may crash. Treat it as an editor with capture capability, not the default choice for the simplest recording setup. Kdenlive Screen Grab manual

There is no controlled head-to-head performance test here, so this is a fit-based recommendation rather than a claim that one application records faster or looks better. Compare operating-system support, setup effort, capture sources, audio control, reliability, and whether your main task is recording or editing.

Why OBS is the best general choice for YouTube

OBS is free and open-source software for recording and live streaming. Its core functions include capturing and compositing visual sources, encoding, recording, and streaming. That range makes it useful for a YouTube tutorial that needs more than a raw desktop capture—for example, a screen, webcam or other visual source, and a separately controlled microphone. The exact devices and capture paths available depend on the operating system and hardware.

The trade-off is setup. A first recording involves choosing sources, deciding how audio is routed, setting the canvas and output dimensions, and selecting recording options. For a basic tutorial, OBS’s help portal points new users toward Simple output mode and presets rather than configuring every encoder field manually. See the OBS help portal.

How to record a YouTube video in OBS

  1. Install the version for your system. Download OBS from the official OBS site and check its current operating-system requirements. OBS lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer; consult the download page for current Linux distribution guidance.
  2. Create a scene and add the capture source. In OBS, use the Sources panel to add the display, window, or other capture source appropriate to your tutorial. Arrange and size sources in the preview. If you want a camera or other visual element, add and position it as a separate source.
  3. Check narration and system audio. Select the intended microphone or auxiliary device in OBS’s audio settings, then watch the audio meters while speaking and playing any sound you need to capture. Confirm that the intended devices are active and that the meter responds; avoid assuming system audio is included just because the desktop is visible.
  4. Choose canvas and output dimensions. Set the composition for the video you intend to publish, and verify that the output dimensions and frame rate match your source material and hardware capabilities. There is no single resolution or frame rate that suits every tutorial; a short test helps catch scaling, cropping, or performance problems.
  5. Choose an output mode and recording preset. If you are new to OBS, start with Simple output mode and a preset from the OBS help guidance. OBS offers quality-oriented, indistinguishable-quality, lossless, and same-as-stream recording options. Higher-quality settings can increase file size and hardware demands; lossless recordings can be very large and may affect performance. Make a short local test before recording a long lesson.
  6. Record and review a short sample. Use Start Recording, then stop and play the file. Check that the picture is framed correctly, narration is clear, required system audio is present, and playback or editing software can open the file. This is particularly important before a long or difficult-to-repeat recording.
  7. Remux if your editing or upload workflow needs MP4. OBS recommends MKV as a resilient recording container: an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. OBS can remux a completed MKV to MP4 from within OBS. MP4 or MOV generally offer broader compatibility with editing and upload workflows, but an interrupted write can make these files unrecoverable. Choose based on the balance you need between recovery and compatibility, not on a universal “best format.”
  8. Upload the finished video to YouTube. Watch the exported or remuxed file before uploading. Confirm the audio, picture, and edits in the final file rather than relying only on the OBS preview.

OBS’s recording guidance explains the container trade-off in more detail: Standard Recording Guide and Recording Formats Guide. Its recording-quality guidance discusses the available quality presets and their resource implications: Recording Quality Guide.

Recording settings: reliability, quality, and file size

Container: MKV or MP4?

Use MKV when recoverability during a recording matters most, then remux to MP4 in OBS if an editor or upload workflow requires it. OBS says MKV supports its encoder combinations and is recoverable after an interrupted recording. MP4 and MOV are often more compatible with editing software and upload workflows, but may be unusable if recording is interrupted before the file is properly finalized. Remuxing changes the container; it does not make a poor recording better.

Quality preset and hardware load

Quality-oriented and indistinguishable-quality presets trade larger files and potentially greater resource use for higher-quality output. Lossless can create especially large files and affect performance. Same-as-stream is relevant when you also have a streaming configuration, but a recording-only tutorial does not need to inherit stream settings. The sensible choice depends on your machine, source material, storage, and intended editing workflow.

Resolution, frame rate, and audio

Match settings to the actual material and the computer’s capacity instead of treating maximum output as a default. A clean screen recording with intelligible narration is more useful than a high-resolution file with dropped frames or missing sound. Check framing, microphone level, desktop audio, and playback in the short sample before committing to a full recording.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • The recording has no narration: Confirm the intended microphone or auxiliary device is selected and its meter moves while speaking. Check that the recording includes the relevant audio track and listen to the test file.
  • Desktop sound is missing: Verify that the system-audio source or device is configured for your platform and that the application producing sound is audible during the test. The available capture route can vary by operating system and setup.
  • The screen is cropped, blank, or the wrong window appears: Recheck the selected display or window source, its visibility, and its size and position in the scene preview. Capture behavior can vary with platform, graphics hardware, and permissions.
  • The recording stutters or the computer struggles: Try a less demanding quality preset or output configuration, close unnecessary applications, and record another short sample. Lossless and higher-quality settings can increase resource demands.
  • An interrupted recording will not open: This is the risk OBS highlights for MP4/MOV when writing is interrupted. For future sessions, record to MKV and remux a completed file when broader compatibility is needed.
  • Kdenlive capture crashes with a documented setting: The Kdenlive 26.08 manual cautions that ScreenGrab using the x246-with-audio setting may crash. Choose another supported workflow or use a dedicated recorder if that setting is essential.

Copyright and YouTube publishing checks

Screen-recording software does not grant permission to publish what it captures. Before uploading, check that you have the rights or applicable permission for recorded music, video, images, software demonstrations, and other third-party material. Also make the finished video meaningfully useful and original to your channel; recording a screen is a production method, not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before building a channel around material you did not create.

If your aim is a conventional recorded tutorial, OBS, ShareX, or Kdenlive creates a file you can edit and upload. If instead you want uploaded videos to play continuously as a YouTube live stream, that is a different workflow.
