To record your screen while appearing over a replaced background, combine a screen-capture source and a webcam source in one OBS scene, then apply the Chroma Key filter to the webcam. Put the webcam above the screen in the source list, position it in the preview, check your audio, and make a short test recording before the real session.
What you need
- OBS Studio to combine and record the sources.
- A webcam or other camera input that shows you against a solid-colored background. OBS provides the Chroma Key filter for a video source; a dedicated green-screen backdrop is optional if you already have a suitable solid background.
- A microphone if you want narration. Check its audio independently from the picture.
You do not need a branded backdrop or separate keying software for this workflow. Results depend on the camera image and background; there is no universal lighting setup or Chroma Key value that fits every room and camera.
Set up the OBS scene
1. Create a scene and capture your screen
In OBS, add a scene, then add the source that matches what you want to show and the operating system you use. OBS’s Quick Start Guide lists Display Capture and Window Capture for Windows and Linux, and macOS Screen Capture for macOS.
- Full desktop: choose the applicable display-capture source to show the whole desktop.
- One application: choose Window Capture on Windows or Linux to limit capture to a particular app window.
- macOS: use macOS Screen Capture, then configure it for the screen content you want.
Capturing one window can keep other desktop activity out of the recording; capturing the full desktop is more suitable when you need to demonstrate activity across several apps. Source availability and labels can vary with OBS version and operating system.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Add the camera
In the Sources panel, add a Video Capture Device and select your webcam or connected camera. OBS treats this as a separate source from the screen capture, so you can size and move your camera image without changing the captured screen.
3. Put the camera in front and compose the shot
Keep the camera source above the screen source in the Sources list: higher sources appear on top. Select the camera in the preview and resize and reposition it. For a small presenter overlay, place it where it covers as little important interface content as possible. Use a larger camera image if your face and gestures need to be prominent.

4. Apply Chroma Key to the camera
- Right-click the camera’s Video Capture Device source.
- Open Filters.
- Add the Chroma Key effect filter.
- Review the preview and adjust the filter controls until the colored background is removed without visibly cutting into you. Exact values depend on the camera image and background, so judge the result in your scene rather than relying on a universal preset.
Apply the key to the video source that contains the colored backdrop, not to the screen-capture source. A physical green screen is one way to provide that backdrop, but it is not a required OBS feature or a particular brand requirement.
Check audio and recording output
Verify the microphone and desktop sound
Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking or playing the material you intend to record. OBS’s Quick Start says desktop audio and microphone capture are enabled by default, but defaults may not select the devices you want. If the meters do not respond as expected, open Settings → Audio and choose the intended devices manually.

Choose output settings for your computer and use
Open Settings → Output to review recording settings. Set the output resolution and frame rate for your intended delivery and what your computer can sustain; there is no single best setting for every system. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. If the recording stutters or the machine struggles, try a less demanding frame rate or resolution and test again.
Make a test recording
Record a short sample and play it back. Confirm that the screen is readable, the keyed background looks acceptable, the camera is framed correctly, and the microphone and desktop audio are present at suitable levels. OBS recommends a test of a few minutes to catch issues before a real recording.

Troubleshooting
- The webcam covers the screen instead of appearing as an overlay: move the webcam source above the screen source in the Sources list.
- The green background remains: confirm that Chroma Key is attached to the camera source, then review its filter controls against the actual camera image.
- Parts of your face or clothing disappear: adjust the key carefully and inspect the result in the preview. The background color and the colors in the camera image affect what the filter removes.
- No microphone or desktop sound is recorded: check the Audio Mixer meters, then select the intended devices in Settings → Audio if needed.
- The video stutters or recording strains the computer: reduce the output resolution or frame rate and make another test. Higher frame rates can require more resources.
- The wrong desktop content appears: check which display or window the screen source captures, and choose the appropriate source for the OS and content you want to demonstrate.
Optional equipment
If your existing background is unsuitable, a green screen backdrop can provide a solid colored area for the camera to key out. A webcam for screen recording supplies the camera image, and soft video lights may help you make the scene look more even. These are optional; the cited setup guidance does not establish a best model, price, or universal lighting arrangement.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the do-it-yourself option when you want to record your screen and camera together. If your next step is keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos; it does not record a live camera or replace this screen-recording workflow. Upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, it plays your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
