OBS vs. FFmpeg for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube 24/7

OBS offers an easy visual loop workflow; FFmpeg may fit scripted setups but requires verified loop syntax and separate recovery planning. Both must meet YouTube’s ingest, archive, and rights requirements.

OBS is usually the simpler choice if you want a visual setup, scenes, overlays, and an on-screen way to loop prerecorded video. Add a Media Source to a scene and enable its Loop option. FFmpeg is the command-line alternative for creators comfortable building and supervising an automated process, but the exact loop command and unattended reliability need to be verified for your own setup rather than assumed.

Either encoder must meet YouTube’s current ingest guidance and use the same Live Control Room workflow. Neither OBS nor FFmpeg, by itself, guarantees a stream will recover from every interruption or run unattended indefinitely.

Which should you choose: OBS or FFmpeg?

Need Better fit Why
Graphical controls, visible preview, scenes, and overlays OBS OBS uses a scene-and-source workflow, and its Media Source has a documented Loop setting.
A command-line-oriented process that can fit into scripted operations FFmpeg It is a plausible fit when you want a command-line workflow, but confirm the exact loop syntax and test your implementation before relying on it.
A continuous broadcast without leaving a computer running at home Consider a cloud service A locally run OBS or FFmpeg process depends on the computer and its network connection. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube.

Choose based on how you want to operate the stream, not on an assumption that one encoder is inherently failure-proof. A 24/7 broadcast also needs monitoring, process recovery planning, and a decision about whether you need a separate local recording.

What both workflows need from YouTube

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS for the listed encoder workflow. It identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and lists CBR bitrate encoding. Bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current table on YouTube’s page for your selected output rather than applying one bitrate to every configuration.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube also recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the broadcast, then monitoring stream health and reviewing any messages. These checks matter for a static documentary loop as well as for a more varied program: inspect the actual output and fix warnings before treating the stream as ready.

Set up the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create and configure a stream using the YouTube setup guide.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
  3. Enter the server URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Use a supported configuration based on YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive the signal and show a preview. Check stream health and messages.
  5. Use Live Control Room’s Go live action when that workflow requires it. Confirm the public stream is actually live rather than assuming that starting the encoder completes YouTube’s separate go-live step.

Loop a prerecorded video in OBS

OBS is the more straightforward option when you want to see and control the broadcast in a graphical interface. Its official Media Source documentation describes adding media files to a scene and enabling Loop so the source restarts when playback ends.

  1. Open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
  2. Add a Media Source to that scene and select the prerecorded video file.
  3. Enable the Media Source’s Loop setting. Confirm the source restarts after the end of the file.
  4. Set the scene composition you need, such as a video source and any additional on-screen elements. Check that the video fills the intended output and that its audio is present at a suitable level.
  5. Configure OBS’s stream settings with the YouTube server URL and stream key, then set output resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate in line with YouTube’s current recommendations.
  6. Start streaming. Wait for the YouTube preview, review stream health and messages, and complete the Go live step in Live Control Room if required.
  7. Observe playback through the point where the file ends and loops. For a 24/7 plan, separately arrange monitoring and a way to restart OBS or restore the stream after a computer, power, or network interruption.

Use FFmpeg when you want a command-line workflow

FFmpeg may suit a fixed-output or scripted workflow, but do not copy an unverified loop command into a production broadcast. The loop flag syntax, input behavior, and interaction with encoding options depend on the implementation and must be checked against the current FFmpeg documentation for the version you install. The available documentation for this comparison does not establish a tested universal command.

  1. Choose and install an FFmpeg build appropriate for your operating system, and verify its version and available codecs.
  2. Consult the documentation for that exact build to select a supported method of repeating your input. Confirm whether your chosen method loops the file itself or requires an external process to restart playback.
  3. Configure the output for YouTube’s current ingest requirements: supported video codec, output resolution and frame rate, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  4. Use your YouTube server URL and stream key as the destination credentials. Keep the key private; avoid placing it in a public script, shared log, or command history that others can read.
  5. Test the output with representative movement and audio. Check YouTube’s preview, stream health, and messages before making the broadcast public.
  6. For unattended use, design process supervision, alerting, and recovery separately. A command-line pipeline is not the same thing as a supervised service, and a successful initial start does not establish that it will recover after a network drop or process failure.

Plan for 24/7 interruptions and archives

A continuous stream is an operational system, not just a looping file. Decide who or what will notice a stalled encoder or lost connection, how the process will restart, and how you will confirm that YouTube is receiving the signal again. The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not certify OBS or FFmpeg as unattended or failure-proof, and the comparison does not establish a failover guarantee for either tool.

There is also an archive limit to plan around. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local recording backup; if a complete archive matters, do not rely on a single continuous 24/7 stream to produce it. Use a recording plan or deliberately shorter broadcast segments. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Rights and monetization still apply to loops

You are responsible for having the necessary rights to broadcast the content, including applicable music rights. A video being available online does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms address the rights needed to exploit live content.

YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams and expects original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Looping a video does not by itself determine whether a channel or stream qualifies. YouTube lists features such as ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream monetization options where available, but ads are not guaranteed to run or produce a particular level of earnings. Eligibility and availability depend on YouTube’s rules and the channel.
