Choose OBS if you want to shape the broadcast with scenes, visual layers and hands-on controls. Choose FFmpeg if you want a fixed, repeatable command-line loop and are comfortable maintaining the process yourself. Both can repeat prepared video; neither, by looping alone, makes a stream reliable through a computer crash, power loss or internet outage.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your stream?
| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A creator who wants a visible production workspace and may revise scenes, overlays or media. | An operator comfortable defining a fixed file-to-stream pipeline on the command line. |
| How it loops | Enable Loop for a local-file Media Source; VLC Video can play a playlist, with Loop Playlist on by default. | Use the input option -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. |
| Control style | GUI scenes and sources are convenient for adjusting imagery and combining elements. | Compact and automatable for a stable configuration, but the operator must manage the running process. |
| Recovery from failure | Looping alone does not establish automatic recovery from a crash, restart or network interruption. | Looping alone does not establish automatic recovery from a crash, restart or network interruption. |
These are workflow differences, not a stability ranking: there is no comparative endurance test establishing that either application is categorically more reliable. In both cases, actual availability depends on the host computer, power, network connection and a monitoring and restart plan.
Set up a repeating video in OBS
Loop one local file
- Open OBS and add a scene if you do not already have one.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create or select the source, enable Local File, and browse to the ambience video.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source. OBS documents Loop as off by default; it makes the file play again when playback completes.
- Arrange the source in the scene and check that its dimensions and audio are suitable for the intended broadcast.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among supported video types, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV among supported audio types. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source type to appear.
- In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video, then add the files to the playlist.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled if you want the playlist to repeat. OBS documents it as on by default.
- If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Playlist playback suits a programme assembled from several recordings; a Media Source is simpler for a single continuous ambience file. The source documentation does not quantify CPU use or guarantee uptime.

Set up a repeating file in FFmpeg
FFmpeg is suited to a fixed pipeline where the input, encoding settings and destination are declared in a command. The essential loop option is -stream_loop -1. FFmpeg defines -1 as an infinite loop; because this is an input option, place it before the input it applies to.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "ambience.mp4" [encoding and audio options] -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run configuration: replace the input filename and destination with your own, and supply encoding and audio options appropriate for your video and YouTube ingest. Do not publish or share the stream key. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS.

For file input, -re reads at the input’s native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1. FFmpeg says realtime pacing is useful when output packet flow speed matters, such as live streaming. Do not apply it indiscriminately to an actual live input. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option placement and behavior.
Match the encoder output to YouTube
Whether the encoder is OBS or FFmpeg, YouTube’s ingest requirements are the same. Its current live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—no more than four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the relevant row in YouTube’s full table rather than treating one figure as universal.

| H.264 example | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload-speed requirements. YouTube advises choosing a quality your upload connection can sustain and running a speed test. For a sleep-ambience stream, verify both picture and sound: steady audio matters as much as a clean image, and a source that looks correct locally can still fail at ingest.
YouTube Help says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Check the YouTube live encoder settings for current codec-specific rates and setup guidance.

Test the loop and monitor the broadcast
- Before going live, test with audio and movement representative of the actual programme, as YouTube advises.
- Confirm the file reaches its end and starts again without an unintended gap, black frame or abrupt audio change.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and read any messages during the event; do not assume that a locally playing preview proves successful delivery.
- Plan how you will notice and respond if the encoder exits, the computer restarts, power fails or internet access drops. The loop options described above do not themselves provide process supervision or restoration.
- If you need a YouTube archive, note YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours.
For a genuinely continuous broadcast, think beyond the repeat button: the computer must remain powered, the connection must hold, and someone or something must detect interruptions and restore the stream. The specific restart method depends on the operating system and hosting setup.
Check rights and YouTube rules before looping ambience
Only stream recordings, music, field recordings, visuals and other material you own or are licensed to use for this purpose. A video being labelled “ambient,” “sleep” or “royalty-free” does not by itself establish permission for a continuous YouTube broadcast. Keep evidence of licences and follow any attribution, monetization or usage limits they specify. YouTube’s ingest settings do not grant rights to the content you send.

Do not assume that repeating a recording makes it eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization decisions are separate from whether an encoder can technically loop a file; review current YouTube policies for copyright and reused or repetitive content before building a channel around a continuous loop.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, not from a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
