OBS vs FFmpeg for a Church’s Nonstop Prerecorded YouTube Stream

OBS suits church teams that want visual controls; FFmpeg suits operators comfortable maintaining a command-line loop. Neither guarantees nonstop reliability, so test the full setup and plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit.

Choose OBS Studio if church volunteers need a visual workflow for managing scenes and sources. Choose FFmpeg if someone on the team can maintain commands or scripts and wants a fixed prerecorded input loop. Neither is proven more reliable for unattended 24/7 operation: test the complete setup, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and plan for YouTube’s 12-hour automatic-archive limit.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your church?

Need Better starting point Why
Visual controls for volunteers OBS Studio OBS provides a graphical workflow for stream setup and visible scene and source management.
A fixed, repeatable prerecorded input loop FFmpeg Its -stream_loop input option can repeat an input indefinitely, making it suitable for a command-driven workflow.
Guaranteed uninterrupted 24/7 operation Neither is established as a winner There is no head-to-head reliability test here, and neither tool’s documented controls prove uninterrupted operation.

This is a practical fit recommendation based on documented interfaces and capabilities, not a reliability benchmark. OBS’s visual workflow does not by itself establish how a particular source will repeat on a schedule. FFmpeg’s infinite input loop does not ensure seamless playback or successful recovery after every network failure.

What both methods need from YouTube

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the starting point for ingest settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264 video, its published recommendations include 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p60. Choose a quality your connection can reliably sustain and run a speed test rather than assuming the connection’s advertised speed is available upload capacity.

Setting YouTube guidance
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended
Rate control CBR recommended
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
H.264 video bitrate at 1080p30 5 Mbps recommended
H.264 video bitrate at 720p60 6 Mbps recommended
Stereo audio AAC or MP3; 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz recommended

These are YouTube’s published settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a church’s particular network, source, or encoder will perform reliably at those values. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up an OBS prerecorded stream

  1. Prepare the channel and event. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel, then create or select the intended YouTube live event.
  2. Configure the stream destination. In OBS, choose YouTube if it is available as an included streaming service, or select a custom streaming server and use the server URL supplied by YouTube. Enter the event’s stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it beyond the people configuring the encoder.
  3. Add and inspect the prerecorded source. Set up the video and any required audio as OBS sources. Check the intended scene and source behavior at the end of the recording; do not assume the video will repeat on the required schedule without verifying its configuration.
  4. Set output values. In OBS output settings, configure streaming bitrate and audio bitrate to match YouTube’s recommendations and the capacity of the church’s upload connection. Configure the stream’s keyframe interval and other available encoder settings to meet YouTube’s guidance.
  5. Run a representative test. Test the actual file, sound, motion, loop boundary, and expected operating duration before relying on the stream. OBS recommends testing as thoroughly as possible before the first live stream.
  6. Go live and observe. Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Have a person or a documented recovery plan ready to respond if the stream stops or its health degrades.

Set up an FFmpeg input loop

FFmpeg is a reasonable choice when a team member can configure and maintain a command-line workflow. Its official documentation describes -stream_loop as an input option: -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely, while -stream_loop 0 means no loop. Infinite input looping is not itself a promise of uninterrupted delivery to YouTube.

  1. Prepare the channel and event. Enable live streaming for the channel if needed, then create or select the intended YouTube live event.
  2. Collect the ingest details. Use the server URL and stream key provided in YouTube’s encoder workflow. Keep the key private. YouTube says to select it in the encoder where available, or copy the server URL and enter the key in the encoder.
  3. Choose a compatible input and output configuration. Configure FFmpeg for the church’s actual file, audio, video encoding, ingest protocol, and YouTube-recommended settings. RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection. There is no single command established here as appropriate for every source and broadcast, so verify the exact options against the file and setup.
  4. Apply the loop to the input. Place -stream_loop -1 as an input option for the prerecorded file. Then verify that the file loops as intended, including the audio and video transition at the boundary.
  5. Test before depending on it. Run the complete command with representative sound and motion, confirm the intended duration and continuity, and observe the receiving stream in YouTube. Test recovery behavior on the church’s actual connection; the loop option does not establish how a stream will recover from a network interruption.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and make sure someone can act on failures or follow a documented recovery procedure.

Plan testing, monitoring, and archiving

  • Test the whole path. Include the chosen file, audio, motion, loop boundary, encoder, network connection, YouTube event, and the duration you expect to run.
  • Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends running a speed test. Set a quality and bitrate that the available connection can sustain reliably; a published bitrate recommendation is not a measurement of your church’s connection.
  • Monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health during the event, and reviewing messages. Monitoring and a recovery plan are operational requirements, not optional polish.
  • Plan for the archive boundary. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that a single stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If the church intends to run beyond that threshold, plan broadcast boundaries and/or independent recording rather than assuming a complete YouTube archive.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom What to check
YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed buffers Check available upload capacity with a speed test, then reduce the selected quality or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
The stream does not connect Check that the event’s server URL and stream key were entered correctly and that the encoder is using the intended ingest protocol. Keep the key private while correcting it.
Playback stops at the end of the file For FFmpeg, verify that -stream_loop -1 is applied as an input option. For OBS, inspect the configured source and verify its end-of-file behavior; do not assume a repeat schedule without testing.
Audio or video breaks at the loop boundary Test the exact file and boundary. Infinite looping does not establish seamless continuity; verify audio/video continuity before using the source for a long broadcast.
The stream disconnects and does not resume as expected Test recovery on the actual network and encoder setup. The documented loop capability does not prove that reconnection will succeed after every network failure; assign a person or write down a recovery procedure.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete after a long broadcast Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; plan boundaries or an independent recording for longer operation.

Computer, workload, and cost considerations

A local OBS or FFmpeg setup needs a computer capable of running the chosen encoder and handling the source and output settings. No minimum specification is established here; actual needs depend on workload and encoding choices, so test the intended machine rather than relying on an invented baseline. YouTube’s settings guidance is available without establishing a particular encoder’s full operating cost.
