Choose FFmpeg if your channel mainly plays a fixed playlist of prerecorded music and you are comfortable maintaining command-line scripts. Its documented looping and real-time input pacing suit that workflow. Choose OBS Studio if you want a visual production interface for managing scenes and making hands-on changes. Neither encoder guarantees a continuous broadcast: you still need a plan for process failures, power, network interruptions, YouTube stream health, music rights, and long-stream archives.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your channel?
| What matters | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Operating style | Visual software workflow. Choose it if you prefer to manage production through a graphical interface. | Command-line workflow with explicit input and output options. |
| Prerecorded looping | The documentation reviewed does not establish a particular playlist or unattended-recovery design. | Its manual documents infinite input looping and real-time pacing of file input, making it a clear fit for a script-managed prerecorded loop. |
| Scene and overlay changes | A natural choice when you want visible scene and overlay control; this is a workflow distinction, not a measured comparison. | Changes are configured through command-line arguments and surrounding scripts. |
| YouTube compatibility | Both must produce an output that meets YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Neither gets a special compatibility advantage simply by being the encoder. | |
| Reliability | No controlled OBS-versus-FFmpeg uptime comparison establishes a reliability winner. Playback looping is not the same as process supervision or network failover. | |
For a mostly static music channel, FFmpeg is usually the more direct fit if you can maintain and monitor a script. If you regularly change the visual presentation, OBS may better suit your production workflow. The recommendation is based on documented capabilities and workflow, not an uptime test. See the FFmpeg documentation and OBS Project documentation.
Before you stream: enable live access and clear the music
Check YouTube account eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available after you enable it. These account-side requirements apply whether you use OBS or FFmpeg. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a launch.
Confirm rights for every recording and composition
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may cause a placeholder image, a warning, or a temporary interruption or termination if the content remains. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. These rules apply to both encoders.

If you have a license for third-party music, YouTube says the relevant rights-holder should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted, even if you restrict the broadcast to territories where you have rights. Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends, if it is archived. An allowlist is not a substitute for obtaining valid rights. Confirm permissions and territories directly with rights-holders; for questions about Indian or other local legal requirements, seek qualified professional advice. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Configure a YouTube-compatible output
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for secure live ingest. For RTMP/RTMPS it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The following bitrate figures are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian viewers’ connection speeds. Choose a setting your upload connection can sustain and test it with representative audio and motion before relying on it. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. Platform guidance can change, so verify it when configuring a new broadcast. RTMPS, bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, and audio settings describe the output to YouTube; they do not make an unreliable power supply or network connection dependable.
Run a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. It documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), useful when pacing matters, such as sending a file as a live stream. The command below is a starting point for one file, not a complete production failover system. Replace the input path and ingest URL with your own values, and confirm the current YouTube ingest requirements before going live.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "music-video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example encodes 30 fps video with a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. Its 5 Mbps video bitrate is the minimum YouTube lists for 1080p at 30 fps H.264, not the recommended 14 Mbps; choose the bitrate for your intended resolution and stable uplink. The sample uses AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. If your file has different dimensions, frame rate, or audio layout, inspect it and configure the output deliberately rather than assuming the example matches it. The stream key is secret: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.
What the loop does—and does not do
The loop option repeats the input; real-time pacing regulates file reading. Neither watches the process, detects every network failure, restarts FFmpeg, changes ingest endpoints, nor guarantees uptime. A production setup needs separate monitoring and a way to recover from a stopped process or failed connection. Test recovery deliberately before treating the channel as unattended.

For a playlist, prepare a playlist input or a script that advances through the intended files, then test transitions, audio continuity, and output format. The command above loops one file; it should not be mistaken for a complete multi-file playlist configuration. Consult the FFmpeg manual for the options applicable to your chosen inputs and outputs.

Before leaving a 24/7 broadcast running, test that the media behaves as intended across transitions, the audio remains present, and the output reaches YouTube with healthy stream status. The documentation basis here does not establish a particular OBS playlist automation or unattended-recovery design. Plan separately for what happens if OBS, the host computer, power, or internet access fails.
Plan archives and stream transitions
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived as a single complete video under that rule. Decide how you will manage stream transitions, watch pages, and the recordings you want to retain. Archive behavior is a YouTube platform consideration, not an OBS-versus-FFmpeg difference. See YouTube’s live-streaming encoder guidance.
Keep the broadcast running: recovery and troubleshooting
Continuous playback is a system problem as well as an encoder choice. The encoder cannot protect a stream from a power cut, computer failure, unstable uplink, expired or changed credentials, platform interruption, or rights match. Assign someone or a monitoring process to check stream health and respond to alerts; plan what will restart the encoder and how you will verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again.
- YouTube does not offer live access: verify the channel, check for a restriction in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live access to become available.
- YouTube shows poor stream health or the broadcast disconnects: check the uplink’s sustained capacity, confirm the ingest settings and stream key, and test a representative stream before returning to 24/7 operation. Lower output demands if the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate.
- FFmpeg stops after one playback: confirm the input is the file you expect and that
-stream_loop -1is applied to that input; this option loops media but does not restart a failed process. - Audio or video is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: compare the actual output codec, bitrate mode, frame rate, keyframe interval, and stereo audio settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Test with representative material.
- A music stream is interrupted: inspect YouTube’s notice and address the identified third-party content. Confirm the necessary rights; for licensed material, contact the rights-holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- A long broadcast has no expected full-length archive: review the under-12-hour archive rule and your transition and recording plan rather than assuming the encoder controls YouTube’s archive behavior.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a local computer to run the broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a prerecorded-video YouTube channel live. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the service loops the uploaded video. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
