Choose OBS’s VLC Video source if you want to manage a playlist inside a scene-based interface and are comfortable installing VLC. Choose an FFmpeg concat script if you want to maintain a text-based sequence and can validate your files and supervise the process. Neither option is proven by its documentation to provide uninterrupted 24/7 service on its own; both need testing and an operations plan.
What you are comparing
OBS already documents a playlist-capable source: VLC Video. A separate third-party playlist plugin is not required for the workflow described here. OBS also has a built-in Media Source for an individual file, with a file-loop option; that is different from managing a playlist. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a sequence of files from a text list, but sequencing files is not the same as keeping a stream healthy through every failure.
The comparison below is about documented features and workflow, not a head-to-head reliability test. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes its sources and settings. The FFmpeg Project’s Formats Documentation describes concat file sequencing, compatibility, and timestamps.

Set up an OBS playlist
- Install VLC and check its architecture. Install VLC before configuring the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC; otherwise the VLC Video source may not appear.
- Add the source to the intended scene. In OBS, select the scene, use the Sources add control, and choose VLC Video. Add the files to its playlist and check their order.
- Set playback behavior deliberately. Inspect Loop Playlist and enable shuffle only if you want randomized order. The documented loop default is on, but verify the installed version’s setting rather than assuming it.
- Review visibility and audio behavior. Decide whether the source should stop, restart, pause, or continue when hidden, and confirm the intended audio track and caching settings. The cited VLC Video documentation displays network caching at 400 ms; that is a displayed setting, not a recommendation for local cartoon files.
- Connect OBS to your destination. Configure the destination’s live-stream settings and stream key in OBS, then verify picture, audio, and connection status with a private or otherwise appropriate test before relying on it.
OBS’s source-code implementation includes a reconnect path for non-local media, but implementation detail is not a service-level guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast. It does not establish what happens in every failure or destination-disconnect case.

Build an FFmpeg concat workflow
1. Validate the files before relying on stream copy
Inspect the cartoon files and confirm that the streams, codecs, and time bases are compatible. A concat list does not make different media formats identical. If the files differ, a filter-and-re-encode workflow may be needed; that adds configuration and compute requirements, and there is no universal command that can be guaranteed for an unknown library.
2. Write and check the file list
The concat demuxer reads a text file with file entries and optional directives. Use valid paths and the syntax documented for your FFmpeg version. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct escaping or quoting; verify that FFmpeg can read every listed file before connecting to a live destination.

3. Configure sequencing and output as separate concerns
Concat reads entries sequentially and adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration. Incorrect duration data can create artifacts, while files with different stream lengths can introduce gaps. The format documentation alone does not supply a complete, universally safe command for looping an arbitrary cartoon library to a live destination. Confirm the loop mechanism, output format, stream settings, and reconnect behavior for your installed FFmpeg build and destination rather than copying a command without checking it.
4. Supervise the process
A script can describe the media sequence and output pipeline; it does not by itself restart FFmpeg after a crash, alert you to a failed stream, or recover every destination disconnect. Use a process supervisor and monitoring appropriate to your host, and test the recovery path instead of assuming the playlist loop covers it.

How to choose for a 24/7 cartoon channel
- Choose OBS VLC Video when scene composition and visible GUI controls matter, and installing the matching VLC build is acceptable. It is also the more natural choice if you already operate the broadcast inside OBS.
- Choose FFmpeg concat when you prefer a text-maintained sequence and direct pipeline control, and can validate compatible inputs, maintain the script, and supervise the process.
- Do not decide on presumed uptime. The cited documentation does not show that either approach runs longer than the other on your machine or with your cartoon files. Test your actual playlist, host, and destination.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Play a full playlist cycle and inspect transitions, audio continuity, and the final-to-first repeat.
- Test a destination disconnect and confirm what reconnects, how long it takes, and whether the playlist resumes as intended.
- Restart the host and verify that the streaming process starts again without manual intervention.
- Test a missing or corrupt file and decide how you will detect and recover from it.
- Update the playlist once, then confirm the change takes effect without breaking the running broadcast.
- Set up monitoring and alerts so a stopped process or lost destination connection does not go unnoticed.
Cartoon rights are a separate requirement
Neither OBS nor FFmpeg grants permission to broadcast the cartoons in your playlist. Confirm that your rights cover the specific titles, territory, term, and streaming use. A stream can work technically and still lack the necessary distribution rights.

Will an FFmpeg concat playlist automatically run forever?
The concat demuxer documentation establishes sequential file reading, not a complete infinite live-stream process. Check and test the loop and restart behavior for your FFmpeg build.
