For a playlist of videos in OBS, add a VLC Video source, add your files, and enable Loop Playlist. That repeats the playlist, but it does not keep OBS, your computer, your internet connection, or YouTube’s broadcast alive by itself. For continuous streaming, test the entire chain and keep OBS and the connection running—or use a cloud service such as StreamNeo to play uploaded videos to YouTube without leaving a computer on.
What the OBS playlist source does—and what it does not
OBS’s VLC Video source plays a playlist of media files using VLC libraries. With Loop Playlist enabled, it starts the list again after the final item. Shuffle Playlist controls whether files play in their listed order or a randomized order.
This is source playback, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. The playlist can loop while the broadcast still stops because OBS closes, the source becomes unavailable, the network fails, the encoder has a problem, or YouTube’s ingest session ends. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its options; it does not promise uninterrupted broadcasting.
Prepare OBS and VLC
Install a matching VLC version
Install VLC before setting up the source. Its architecture must match OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. If VLC Video is missing from the source choices, first check that VLC is installed and that the two applications have matching bitness.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the files before building the list
- Use media files you have the right to stream, and confirm each file plays with the expected picture and sound.
- Make sure the files contain the audio you intend viewers to hear. A silent file or unexpected track can make a technically live stream seem broken.
- Preview the playlist locally, including the transition from its last item back to its first. Listen for gaps, silence, or abrupt audio changes.
Add and configure a VLC Video playlist
- In OBS, select the scene that should carry the videos. In the Sources area, add a new VLC Video source.
- Add the intended media files to that source’s playlist. Arrange them in the desired order before testing.
- Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the list. OBS documents it as on by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on an assumed default.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence; turn it on only if a randomized order is wanted. OBS documents it as off by default.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is to stop playback while the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes or hide the source, that behavior may cause playback to stop and restart. Choose the behavior deliberately and test the scene changes you expect to use.
- Check the source’s audio track selection. OBS documents Audio Track 1 as the default; verify that it is the track containing the intended audio, then listen in a local preview.
- Review Network caching if you are diagnosing playback. OBS documents a 400 ms default for VLC Video. The documentation does not establish a universal alternative value, so do not treat a particular change as a guaranteed fix.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and obtain its stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating a stream with an encoder.
- Enter the key in OBS’s streaming connection settings. Treat it as a credential: YouTube describes a stream key as the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube explains stream options in Manage live stream settings.
- Configure the encoder and connection, then preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.
- Run a complete test with representative video motion and audio. Include a playlist boundary and any scene change that might hide the VLC source. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before and during the broadcast.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings
Set video quality in light of your content and the upload capacity that is actually stable—not merely a connection’s advertised peak. Higher resolution and frame rate need more bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives codec- and format-specific recommendations. For H.264, it lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube reference settings, accessed on 2026-10-03, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS for ordinary encoder ingestion unless your workflow has a specific reason to use another supported protocol.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR in its current encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: Start with the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test. If the ingest is unstable, lower the chosen resolution or bitrate and check stream health again.
Do not copy one bitrate figure across every format: the recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality.

When HLS is relevant
HLS is not the simplest default for an ordinary looping playlist. Consider it only when a workflow requirement—such as a compatible HDR or codec setup—calls for it. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS setup guide specifies TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Those requirements make HLS a distinct delivery setup, not a setting that needs to be enabled just to loop files in OBS.
Confirm the channel can go live
A channel eligibility problem can look like an OBS problem. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate. Its current getting-started guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days and states a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance if the channel cannot start a broadcast.

Rights, repeat viewing, and monetization considerations
Only stream video and audio you are authorized to use. A playlist loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast a documentary, soundtrack, or other creator’s work. Check the applicable rights and YouTube’s current policies before scheduling material, and review the copyright safety checklist if you want a pre-stream rights review.
Permission to stream and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. A continuous or repeated playlist should not be treated as proof that a channel or its content qualifies for monetization; consult YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content in question. Avoid describing a loop as a live camera production when it is prerecorded video.

Troubleshoot a playlist or broadcast that stops
- VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. The documented pairing is 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Playback stops after the final item: Check that Loop Playlist is on and that the source has the intended files.
- A file plays in the wrong order: Check the playlist order and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- Playback restarts after a scene change: Inspect Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible; test the selected behavior in the scene transitions you use.
- Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong: Check that the media file contains the expected audio and that the source’s audio track selection is correct. Audio Track 1 is the documented default. Listen to the local preview and YouTube preview.
- YouTube reports unstable ingest: Check the stream-health messages and test the actual upload capacity. Lower resolution or bitrate if needed, then repeat the test. A bitrate that is appropriate on paper may still exceed what a connection can sustain steadily.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the credential in OBS before going live again.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification, restrictions, age eligibility, and first-time activation time in YouTube’s guidance before changing playlist settings.
- The live broadcast ends even though looping is enabled: Check OBS activity, the selected source, the network, encoder health, and the YouTube ingest session separately. Looping controls media playback only.
