Portable mode is separate: it isolates OBS configuration beside the application on supported Windows setups, but it does not make linked video or image files portable.
Which OBS option should you use?
- Changing output settings—such as the stream destination, resolution, or encoder output? Use a Profile.
- Changing the loop’s scenes, source layout, or audio sources? Use a Scene Collection.
- Want a self-contained OBS configuration folder or isolated instances? Use portable mode on Windows, then separately verify that media paths work wherever you move the folder.
These options solve different problems and can be used together: portable mode determines where OBS keeps its configuration; Profiles and Scene Collections organize different parts of that configuration. OBS’s documentation describes these features, but does not provide a loop-stream-specific preset or tested recipe.
What a Profile saves
OBS says a Profile saves most OBS settings, primarily those related to outputs. Its documented contents include Stream settings (including Connected Account), Video settings (including Base/Canvas Resolution), and all types of Output settings. A Profile does not save scenes. You can create, duplicate, rename, remove, import, or export Profiles as JSON. See the OBS Project’s Profiles guide (dated 2022-01-14).
For example, you could keep the same loop layout while using separate Profiles for different stream destinations or output configurations. The exact settings available depend on your OBS setup; the guide does not define a special loop-stream Profile.

What a Scene Collection saves
A Scene Collection saves the scenes and sources added to that collection. OBS also says collections contain Global Audio Sources from Settings → Audio. They do not save output settings; use a Profile for those. For a loop stream, this is the place to organize the scene composition and sources used for the video and audio presentation. See the OBS Project’s Scene Collections guide (dated 2022-01-14).
OBS can import OBS Studio collections and supports migration from OBS Classic, XSplit Broadcaster, and Streamlabs Desktop. The guide says OBS automatically adjusts collections created on another operating system. Importing a collection does not remove the need to check whether its media files are available at their referenced paths.

What portable mode changes—and what it does not
Portable mode tells OBS to load its configuration directory from the same path as the application. OBS describes it as useful for relocating an installation or running multiple instances without Profiles and Scene Collections crossing over. It is not a substitute for either of those features.
The OBS Project’s Running in Portable Mode guide (dated 2024-07-23) says portable mode is not supported on macOS or Linux. On Windows, use the ZIP build: unzip it, then either place an empty portable_mode or portable_mode.txt file in the root folder, or launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe with --portable.

Portable configuration does not carry your loop media automatically
OBS explicitly warns: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” The configuration folder can move while a video or image source still points to a location that does not exist on the destination computer. The guide recommends modifying the Scene Collection JSON manually or using a generic path common to all devices.
Before relying on a relocated setup, check every media source on the destination machine and confirm it resolves to the intended file. Carrying the OBS folder on a USB drive alone does not make linked media portable.

Set up a loop configuration that is easier to maintain
- Choose the output configuration. In OBS, create or select a Profile for the stream and output/video settings you need. Profiles do not contain scenes.
- Organize the loop presentation. Create or select a Scene Collection for the loop’s scenes and sources. Check Global Audio Sources under Settings → Audio if they are part of the setup.
- Decide whether portable mode is needed. On Windows, use the ZIP build and the portable marker file or
--portablelaunch option if you need the configuration stored beside the application or want isolated instances. Do not rely on this option on macOS or Linux, which the cited OBS guide says are unsupported. - Verify media paths wherever the setup will run. Open the collection on the destination system and confirm that each video, image, and other linked asset is available. Repair paths as needed; portable mode alone will not do it.
- Test before depending on startup automation. Confirm the intended Profile, Scene Collection, sources, and stream behavior in OBS. Documentation of a launch option is not proof that a particular loop, login state, or recovery scenario will work unattended.
Optional startup parameters
OBS documents launch parameters for selecting startup content and configuration: --collection "name", --profile "name", and --scene "name". It also documents --portable (or -p) and --startstreaming. The OBS Project’s Launch Parameters page is dated 2021-05-30.
These parameters are documented options, not a verified unattended-loop recipe. The cited page does not establish how a particular Profile and collection combination, account login persistence, or stream recovery will behave in your setup. Test your exact command and configuration before using it for an unattended stream.
