For a mostly static ocean-waves stream, a sensible OBS starting point is YouTube over RTMPS, H.264 video with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Choose a resolution and frame rate your footage, encoder, and upload connection can sustain; test the full scene before going public. These settings help establish a stable feed, but they cannot guarantee that a computer, internet connection, or YouTube stream will stay online around the clock.
Recommended OBS settings for ocean waves
Use the values below as a starting point, not a promise of performance on every computer or network. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are platform guidance; they are not a required internet-plan speed or a measurement of your particular setup.
| OBS setting | Starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Service and protocol | YouTube; RTMPS when available | YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube specifies constant bitrate for its encoder recommendations. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A broadly supported starting choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; select one only if OBS and your computer’s encoder support it. |
| Video bitrate | Match resolution and frame rate; see below | Use a rate your upload and encoder can sustain continuously, with headroom for normal variation. |
| Audio codec | AAC | YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Stereo ocean audio ordinarily does not need 5.1. |
| Stereo audio rate and sample rate | 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s recommended advanced settings for stereo audio. |
| Automatic reconnect | Enabled | OBS supports automatic reconnect. No single retry interval is established as right for every connection. |
| Latency | Normal | For ambient footage with no live interaction, low latency is usually less important; YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. |
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, include these combinations:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are encoder recommendations, not minimum upload-plan speeds. YouTube advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Pick a setting that your connection can sustain with headroom rather than setting OBS to the highest number your speed test briefly reports. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats, so creators generally do not need to send separate viewer resolutions.

720p30 or 720p60?
For a mostly static ocean view, 30 fps is a reasonable first test; that is a content-based inference, not a YouTube rule. Try 60 fps if the movement in the waves benefits from the extra temporal detail and your encoder and connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p60, compared with 4 Mbps at 720p30.
720p or 1080p?
Base the choice on the source footage’s actual resolution, how visible additional detail is to your intended viewers, your computer’s encoding capacity, and sustainable upload bandwidth. Sending a higher resolution than the source does not create detail. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps; use it only if your complete setup can hold that rate steadily.

Set up the OBS stream and protect your key
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and use RTMPS when available. You can connect through OBS’s account integration or provide a stream key, depending on the options shown in your version and setup.
- Set encoder output. In OBS output settings, choose H.264 if supported, set rate control to CBR, set the bitrate for your selected resolution and frame rate, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- Set stereo audio. Use AAC where available, with a 128 kbps bitrate and 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check that the ocean track—not an unintended microphone, desktop sound, or other source—is the audio reaching the stream.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That identification alone does not establish its current price, reliability, partner terms, or suitability for a particular channel.
Preflight the scene before leaving it live
- Check the media and loop. Confirm that the ocean video and sound are present, synchronized, and repeat as intended. Listen for gaps, clicks, clipping, silence, or unintended microphone and desktop audio.
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and select a bitrate the connection can sustain with headroom. YouTube recommends a speed test but does not establish a universal percentage of spare bandwidth.
- Run a test stream. Use an unlisted or private test with similar audio and visual motion. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public. YouTube’s guidance is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check actual playback. Open the channel or watch page and listen on a mobile device as well as your streaming computer. This can expose playback or audio problems that are not obvious in the OBS preview.
- Plan monitoring. Enable OBS automatic reconnect and arrange a way to check the computer, connection, audio, and YouTube stream status. If you are also recording a local archive, confirm the file is growing and inspect its integrity.
YouTube’s encoder tips suggest setting up an encoder at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting it 15 minutes before the event. For a continuous ambient channel, apply the practical point: leave enough time to check the complete preview and fix problems before relying on the stream.

What OBS settings cannot guarantee
A 24/7 label does not make a stream immune to power cuts, computer failures, lost internet, source-media problems, or platform interruptions. Automatic reconnect can help OBS recover from a dropped connection, but it does not make the whole chain interruption-proof. Monitor stream health after launch and have a plan for restarting or troubleshooting if the feed stops.
The available guidance does not establish a maximum continuous-stream duration, how long YouTube retains an archive of a 24/7 broadcast, or a restart interval that preserves recordings. Do not assume a particular archive outcome or schedule without checking current YouTube guidance for your stream.

Copyright and monetization: check the actual content
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for both the ocean footage and its audio. A recording of nature is not automatically free to reuse: rights depend on the source and its terms. The settings above do not determine whether a channel or repeated prerecorded stream qualifies for monetization. Check YouTube’s current policies and the licenses for the specific material you plan to use rather than assuming that a looping ambient stream is automatically eligible or ineligible.
StreamNeo offers a cloud alternative for prerecorded video on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the loop running from the cloud, so a home computer and connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
