If OBS stays on “Connecting,” first check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the stream-health status and exact error message, then check OBS’s connection and performance indicators. “Connecting” is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the cause may be channel eligibility or stream-key setup, the network path to YouTube, an ingest or format error, or rendering/encoding load. Work through those possibilities in that order before changing settings or replacing hardware.
1. Check YouTube’s message before changing OBS
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and any timestamped messages. YouTube’s dashboard checks the feed arriving from your encoder. Red errors are critical and may prevent the event from starting; yellow warnings can affect stream quality. Record the exact message and time so you can match your next step to what YouTube actually reports. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
Distinguish a feed YouTube is not receiving from one that arrives but has poor audio or video. If OBS appears to be sending but YouTube reports a problem, check the encoder output, format, CPU load, and outbound internet connection as appropriate; YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
2. Verify channel eligibility, destination, and stream key
Confirm live streaming is enabled
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If you are activating live streaming for the first time, wait for YouTube’s enablement process to finish; changing OBS settings cannot bypass it. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips for eligibility guidance.

Check the destination and current key
In OBS, confirm that the selected service and server are the intended YouTube destination. Compare its stream key with the current key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address”: they tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS with the newly copied one. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice for encoder startup errors also directs creators to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and paste it into their encoder.
Keep the key secret. Do not include it in a public screenshot, support request, or log you share. The YouTube live-stream settings guide explains stream setup and key management.
Review Auto-start and Auto-stop for a continuous broadcast
In the event’s Live Control Room settings, check whether Auto-start and Auto-stop match how you intend to run the 24/7 broadcast. These settings control whether the encoder can start or stop the stream. They are worth checking for a continuous-stream workflow, but are not established as a universal cause of OBS remaining on “Connecting.”

3. Use OBS indicators to separate connection trouble from performance trouble
If dropped frames are rising, investigate the network path
OBS explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” A rising dropped-frames count therefore points toward connection stability or bitrate capacity; it is not the same diagnosis as rendering or encoding lag. See the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Try a different ingest server if the selected service offers a choice. A change in results can help isolate a route-specific problem, but is not a guaranteed fix.
- Temporarily reduce the video bitrate and try again. If the connection stabilizes, the configured rate may be too high for the available path. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as an initial bitrate starting point in its troubleshooting guide, published 2024-09-30. Treat this as a rough heuristic, not a YouTube requirement: upload capacity fluctuates and the route to the ingest server matters.
- Check network software. Temporarily test without a VPN or security software that may interfere with the connection, and review bundled network “optimization” utilities. Change one thing at a time and restore protections after the test.
- Check OBS’s network binding. OBS recommends leaving “Bind to IP” at “Default.” If dual-stack connectivity appears to be the issue, IPv4-only can be a diagnostic test; if it does not help, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
OBS also documents optional network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate measures, but availability can depend on platform and version. Dynamic bitrate reduces stream quality to respond to connection trouble; it does not repair the underlying network cause. Use OBS’s guide for the relevant version and system rather than treating either option as a universal setting.
Test Wi-Fi, wired networking, and hardware methodically
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If possible, test Ethernet and compare the result. If the problem remains, possible physical causes include the modem or router connection, network cable, network card, switch, extender, or an outdated network driver. Test one component at a time; do not buy replacement equipment until the evidence points to a physical-link problem. OBS advises contacting your ISP if you are unsure whether hardware replacement is appropriate.

4. Check YouTube’s encoder requirements and OBS’s output
Use settings that match the selected codec and video mode
YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations cover RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, CBR bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The applicable bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no one bitrate that fixes every connection. For one specific example, YouTube’s current table lists H.264 at 1080p60 with a 6 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. Do not apply those figures to a different codec or mode.
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If Live Control Room reports an incorrect stream format, use that exact error message to guide changes; YouTube’s error reference specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for the incorrect-format error it describes. Before a full broadcast, YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and motion similar to the actual program, then monitor stream health.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, follow the performance path
If dropped frames are not the issue but OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, investigate computer performance separately. Check GPU pressure and other GPU-heavy applications, simplify scenes, or reduce output resolution or frame rate. On Windows, OBS lists running OBS as administrator as a troubleshooting step. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide addresses this class of problem; encoding overload and network-related dropped frames are distinct bottlenecks.

5. Escalate with evidence, not the stream key
If the checks do not resolve the issue, collect information that can distinguish a channel, network, or performance fault:
- OBS version and operating system.
- Whether OBS shows dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag.
- The exact YouTube Live Control Room health message and its timestamp.
- The selected destination or server, but never the stream key.
- An upload-speed result, whether a VPN or security software is active, and whether wired or alternate-network testing changes the outcome.
If internet testing points to a connection problem, YouTube and OBS both direct creators toward their ISP. For an ongoing YouTube live-stream issue, use YouTube’s support path described in its troubleshooting guide. When posting logs or screenshots for help, remove or conceal the stream key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is that a home computer must keep running to sustain a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
