YouTube does not save a temporary queue after the browser closes, and the available documentation does not guarantee that a full reboot will restore the exact video, timestamp, or shuffle order. The right recovery steps depend on whether playback was in a browser, an OBS Browser Source, or a local-media playlist.
First identify how the playlist was playing
Before changing settings, determine which playback path you used. A YouTube playlist in a desktop browser, a YouTube page inside OBS Browser Source, and a playlist of files in OBS VLC Video are separate systems with different recovery controls.
- Desktop browser: YouTube is open as a webpage outside OBS.
- OBS Browser Source: OBS loads a webpage from a URL. This is still YouTube playback in a browser source, not a local-file playlist. OBS describes the source in its Browser Source documentation.
- OBS VLC Video: OBS plays a playlist of local media files through VLC. This is not YouTube-hosted playback; the VLC Video source documentation says VLC must be installed.
Also decide whether you need the playlist to repeat, or need playback to return to the exact video and timestamp. The documented controls below cover reopening a playlist and enabling repeat; they do not promise exact-position recovery after a full reboot.
Recover a saved YouTube playlist and enable repeat
- Open the saved playlist. Find it in your YouTube account’s playlists and open a video that belongs to it. Do not rely on a temporary queue as the saved rotation: YouTube Help says, “Your queue won’t save after you’ve closed your browser.” YouTube recommends saving the queue to a playlist if you want to continue later. - Turn on playlist repeat. On a computer, open a video that is part of the playlist, expand the playlist box, then click Loop. YouTube says this makes the playlist repeat continuously. The steps are in Loop videos or playlists on YouTube.
- Rebuild a queue if that was your only rotation. Add the videos again, then save them as a playlist so the sequence is available after the browser closes. Confirm the saved playlist contains the intended videos before relying on it.
- Check the actual restart behavior in a controlled test. Restart the relevant application or PC before the next live session. Check which item starts, whether Loop is active, and whether the intended sequence remains. This verifies your own setup; it does not guarantee that YouTube will restore the same result after every reboot.
If YouTube was playing inside OBS Browser Source
Open OBS and inspect the Browser Source used for YouTube. OBS provides settings named Shutdown source when not visible and Refresh browser source when scene becomes active. These control whether the page is unloaded when hidden or refreshed when its scene is activated; OBS does not document them as a way to restore YouTube’s exact video, timestamp, repeat setting, or shuffle state after a full PC reboot.

After the reboot, activate the scene and check whether the YouTube page is loaded, signed in as needed, and showing the intended playlist. If it is not, reopen the saved playlist in the source and restore Loop using YouTube’s playlist control. Test the source after restarting OBS, not just by switching scenes, if the reboot behavior is what matters.
If OBS was playing local files through VLC Video
Use this path only when the rotation consists of media files on the PC. In the VLC Video source’s playlist controls, OBS shows Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist; their documented defaults are On and Off, respectively. Verify the files and desired control states after restarting OBS. These controls apply to the local media playlist and do not recover a playlist hosted on YouTube.

Should you use an OBS playlist plugin?
The community listing for Media Playlist Source says it can save the currently playing file so it can play when OBS restarts. That description concerns a media file, not YouTube playback, and does not establish compatibility with your OBS version or setup. Check the listing’s current requirements and test it before depending on it; it is not a documented fix for YouTube playlist recovery.
Why exact playback may not return after a reboot
A playlist’s repeat setting, its current video, its playhead position, and its shuffle order are distinct pieces of playback state. The YouTube help pages explain how to save a playlist and enable Loop, but do not state that a full PC reboot restores the exact item, timestamp, or shuffle order. OBS’s Browser Source settings describe page visibility and refresh behavior, not a YouTube-specific reboot-resume guarantee. If exact-position recovery is essential, verify it with a controlled restart on your own configuration rather than assuming it will persist.

Troubleshooting common recovery problems
- The queue is empty after the browser reopened: it was likely a temporary queue. Recreate it and save the videos as a YouTube playlist for later use.
- The playlist plays once and stops: reopen a playlist video, expand the playlist box, and click Loop.
- OBS shows a blank or stale browser page: activate the scene and inspect the Browser Source. Check the source’s shutdown and refresh options, then reopen the saved playlist if necessary.
- The wrong video or point in the video starts: the documented recovery controls do not guarantee restoration of the previous item or timestamp. Select the intended item and test again after an application or PC restart.
- Local files do not loop or shuffle as intended: confirm the source is VLC Video, VLC is installed, and Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist have the desired states.
- A plugin does not restore playback: confirm it is intended for local media, review its current OBS compatibility, and test it independently. Its listing does not establish YouTube recovery.
