Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a CPU-only VPS, start with OBS using x264, the veryfast preset, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps video bitrate. If the VPS cannot encode or deliver that reliably, step down to 720p30 at 3 Mbps before trying a slower, more CPU-intensive preset. Treat these as starting settings, not a guarantee: test the actual scene and network path, and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health.
Recommended OBS settings for a 24/7 VPS stream
These settings are a practical starting point for a CPU-only VPS sending H.264 to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, and configure the streaming encoder. The exact encoder labels can vary by OBS build and operating system.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder | x264 | CPU-based H.264 encoding when a supported hardware encoder is unavailable. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 5,000 kbps | Matches YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 1080p30. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. |
| CPU Usage Preset | veryfast | A sensible initial balance for CPU-constrained VPS encoding. |
| Output resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | A moderate-detail baseline; reduce these if the VPS struggles. |
Set the stream resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video, then confirm the encoder output resolution and frame rate match the intended YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest; configure the server and stream key through OBS’s streaming settings or the YouTube account connection flow. Keep the stream key private.
Choose the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives different H.264 ingest bitrates by resolution and frame rate. Match the row to your output rather than choosing a bitrate in isolation.

| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | Lower-load fallback when CPU or delivery capacity is constrained. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | When smoother motion matters and the VPS sustains the encoding and upload load. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | A sensible baseline for static or modest-motion material. |
| 1080p60 | 10 Mbps | When added motion detail justifies the higher resource demand. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest values, not guarantees of picture quality for every source. The YouTube guidance page also lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 as H.264 recommendations in its current table; check the live table and match the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube Live settings before publishing. The differing values make it especially important to consult the current platform table for the precise stream mode you choose. YouTube encoder guidance
Your VPS uplink needs capacity beyond the configured video bitrate to carry the stream reliably, but the cited guidance does not establish one universal bandwidth margin. Validate the actual VPS network path under the intended load instead of assuming that a nominal port speed guarantees uninterrupted delivery.

How to choose an x264 preset without overloading the VPS
The x264 preset determines how much CPU work is spent compressing the video. Faster presets use less CPU but are less compression-efficient; slower presets consume more CPU for a potential quality improvement. OBS Project’s x264 guide gives examples of 3,000–5,000 kbps at 720p30 and 5,000–8,000 kbps at 1080p30 for veryfast with low-to-medium motion. Those are examples from its 2017 guide, not a replacement for YouTube’s current ingest table.
OBS’s guide puts the core tradeoff plainly: “There is no such thing as ‘best settings’.” Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, motion, and available CPU all affect the right choice. On a VPS with limited or shared CPU, stable output is more important than using a slower preset. If encoding lag appears, first lower the resolution or frame rate, then consider a faster preset. Do not infer a reliable minimum vCPU count from these settings: VPS performance depends on the particular instance and workload.

When to use a hardware encoder
If the VPS actually exposes a hardware encoder supported by OBS, hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU. Availability depends on the provider and instance, so verify that the encoder is accessible in the running environment. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. OBS hardware encoding guidance
Test the stream before leaving it live
- Set up a private or otherwise controlled test in YouTube Live. Select the intended ingest codec and output mode, then configure OBS to use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest and the correct stream key.
- Use representative footage and sound. Include movement and audio similar to what the channel will actually play; a static test image does not reveal the load of more active material.
- Run OBS at the final resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and preset. Observe encoding lag, dropped frames, and CPU pressure while the test runs.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the stream reports trouble, distinguish encoding lag from delivery/network problems before changing settings.
- Change one variable at a time. For an overloaded VPS, reduce output to 720p30 at 3 Mbps as a fallback, retest, and only then assess whether a different preset or verified hardware encoder improves the result.
OBS recommends testing before the first live stream, and YouTube advises testing with movement and audio similar to the eventual stream while monitoring stream health. OBS’s overview also notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. OBS Studio overview · YouTube encoder guidance

Troubleshoot common VPS streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows encoding lag | CPU cannot sustain the selected output or x264 preset. | Reduce resolution or frame rate; then consider a faster preset. Retest the same scene at the revised settings. |
| OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube reports delivery trouble | Network delivery from the VPS may not be stable enough for the configured bitrate. | Check the VPS’s actual outbound path and available capacity; lower the bitrate by choosing a lower supported output target and test again. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream configuration problem | Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, ingest server, or stream key may not match the selected setup. | Compare the OBS output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, confirm the key, and verify RTMPS settings. |
| Picture quality is insufficient despite a stable stream | Bitrate may be low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, or source motion. | Use the YouTube bitrate row that matches the intended output, or reduce resolution/frame rate if the VPS cannot sustain the corresponding higher bitrate. |
| VPS CPU performance varies or is unclear | Shared or provider-specific resource behavior can change real-world encoding capacity. | Test the actual instance under the intended continuous workload. No universal vCPU threshold or provider uptime level is established by the cited guidance. |
