How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Stream in Sync When Video Files Have Different Frame Rates

Normalize every playlist file to one constant output frame rate, then check timestamps, audio, and clip boundaries before streaming to YouTube.

Convert every video in the playlist to one deliberate, constant output frame rate before it reaches the live encoder. That keeps the encoder from switching cadence as it moves between files, but it does not automatically fix bad timestamps or audio drift. Choose a target that suits the material, check the joins between clips, and test the complete output before relying on it for continuous playback.

Why mixed frame rates can disrupt a continuous stream

A playlist may contain footage at 24, 25, 29.97, 30, or other frame rates. If the encoder passes through each file’s native cadence, its output can change timing characteristics at clip boundaries. Converting all items to the same constant frame rate (CFR) gives the live encoder a consistent video cadence.

Frame cadence is only one part of synchronization. Incorrect or discontinuous timestamps can still cause timing problems, and audio can drift or jump even when video is constant-rate. Treat frame-rate conversion, timestamps, and audio continuity as separate checks.

Choose one output frame rate for the playlist

There is no universally best frame rate for a mixed library. Select a target based on the source material’s motion and the output you want, then use it consistently. Rates such as 25, 30, or 60 fps can be appropriate in particular contexts; YouTube’s live guidance supports up to 60 fps, but that ceiling is not a recommendation to use 60 fps for every playlist. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives the current ingest requirements and recommendations.

  • For a mostly 24 fps film collection, consider whether a target suited to film motion better preserves the intended look than a higher rate.
  • For mixed material, consider the dominant content and how motion looks after conversion; inspect representative clips rather than choosing solely by the largest source frame rate.
  • Keep the same target through every playlist item and the live encoder output.

Normalize the files before live ingest

Inventory the source material

Check each file’s actual frame cadence, duration, dimensions, audio streams, timestamp behavior, and whether it is progressive or interlaced. Do not assume a filename or export label accurately describes its timing. Include clips with different motion characteristics and any files known to have sync issues in the checks.

Choose frame dropping/duplication or interpolation

FFmpeg’s fps filter converts to a constant rate by dropping or duplicating frames as needed. This is the conventional choice when you want a stable cadence without synthesizing new motion. The tradeoff is that converted movement can look juddery, particularly where frames must be dropped or repeated.

FFmpeg’s framerate filter interpolates frames to create new in-between images. It may make some conversions look smoother, but can introduce visual artifacts or change the character of motion. For interlaced sources, FFmpeg says to deinterlace before using this filter and re-interlace afterward if required. Compare the result with the original at points with movement before using interpolation across a playlist. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for the filters’ options and behavior.

Apply one conversion consistently

Use the selected conversion approach and target rate for every playlist item before sending the material to the live encoder. The encoder should emit one stable frame rate regardless of each source file’s original rate. A filter name alone is not a complete conversion recipe: the correct command also depends on the files, audio handling, interlacing, output format, and encoding setup.

Align timestamps and check audio separately

Frame-rate conversion does not repair timestamps that start at unexpected positions or have gaps. In its documented multi-input filter scenario, FFmpeg recommends setpts=PTS-STARTPTS when inputs need to begin at the same zero timestamp. That is an example of timestamp alignment, not a command to apply blindly to every playlist or a full playlist-ingest procedure.

If sync problems appear, inspect audio and video timing rather than repeatedly changing the frame rate. FFmpeg documents separate filters for audio and video timestamps. Listen and watch through the start, middle, and end of representative clips, and pay particular attention to transitions: check that audio does not restart, overlap, disappear, or gradually drift from the picture.

Configure a stable YouTube encoder output

After normalizing the sources, configure the software or hardware encoder to emit the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe cadence throughout the stream. A hardware encoder does not automatically correct source files with mixed frame rates; normalize the feed before encoding either way.

  • Protocol and codecs: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 in its encoder guidance. Check the current YouTube requirements and your encoder’s compatibility before selecting a combination.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance permits up to 60 fps. Keep the output at the chosen target rather than switching to match each source file.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds.
  • Bitrate: Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat one bitrate as right for every output configuration.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for its live encoder setup.

Settings can change, so consult the YouTube encoder settings page for the current bitrate ranges and requirements that apply to your chosen output.

Test transitions and monitor stream health

Test the actual encoder-to-YouTube path with footage that has movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Include transitions between files at different native frame rates; a test of just one clip will not reveal boundary problems. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

  1. Play a representative test playlist through the same normalization and encoder settings planned for the stream.
  2. Watch and listen to clip starts, clip ends, and joins for judder, repeated or missing frames, audio gaps, overlaps, or lip-sync errors.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream-health display and the encoder’s messages for warnings or interruptions.
  4. Test reconnection and your restart or recovery process in the environment you will actually use.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a single session can run uninterrupted for 24/7. Plan and test session restarts, reconnection behavior, and the effect on archives rather than assuming continuous operation is guaranteed. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot sync problems

Symptom What to check Practical next step
Motion changes noticeably at a clip boundary The incoming file may have a different native cadence, or it may not have passed through the same conversion. Confirm every item is normalized to the same target rate before ingest; review a motion-heavy section of the converted file.
Motion looks uneven throughout a converted clip The chosen target and conversion method may produce visible frame drops or repeats. Compare an fps conversion with the source; if considering framerate interpolation, inspect for artifacts and handle interlaced material as FFmpeg documents.
Audio is out of sync immediately at a join Audio may restart, overlap, or have a timestamp discontinuity at the boundary. Check audio continuity and the timestamps around that transition; do not assume a video frame-rate change alone is the cause.
Audio gradually drifts from the picture Video cadence can be stable while audio timing or timestamps remain wrong. Inspect audio and video timing separately and test longer representative playback before returning to the live stream.
The stream reports encoder or connection problems Output settings, ingest compatibility, or the connection may be at fault rather than the source frame rate. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages, codec, bitrate, keyframes, and reconnect behavior; run another test after each change.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel built around uploaded documentaries or other pre-recorded videos, StreamNeo runs playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. The service information describes uploaded video playback but does not establish how mixed source frame rates are normalized, so check your files and test the output rather than assuming a particular conversion behavior.
