Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use OBS’s VLC Video Source when you need to cycle through multiple videos; use its built-in Media Source when you need to repeat one video. VLC Video Source supports playlists and has Loop Playlist enabled by default, but it depends on VLC being installed. Neither source is documented as a way to guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 broadcasting.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Your need | OBS source | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video file | Media Source | Its Loop property repeats a single file after playback ends. Loop is off by default. |
| Play multiple local files in sequence or shuffle | VLC Video Source | It supports playlists, and Loop Playlist is on by default. Shuffle Playlist is off by default. |
These sources solve different playback needs; neither is documented as more reliable for an extended live broadcast. OBS’s media-source documentation does not establish 24/7 uptime, recovery after a power or network failure, or comparative reliability. OBS Project: Media Sources
Set up a repeating playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video Source. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the source. In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear, use the Sources panel’s add button, and choose VLC Video Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add your files. In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist. Check that the files play on the same computer and that the playlist order is the one you intend.
- Review playback properties. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list. Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a predictable sequence, or enable it if you want the order randomized.
- Check sound and accessibility. Verify the intended audio track and whether subtitles should appear. Confirm the source’s size and placement in the scene.
- Review source visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. Make sure scene changes or hidden-source states will not cause unwanted playback behavior.
- Check network caching if relevant. The documented default is 400 ms. This is a setting, not a guarantee against interruptions; change it only to address a specific playback issue.
- Test the complete scene. Preview the playlist and confirm transitions, audio, order, and looping before starting a public stream.
Set up one repeating video with Media Source
- Add the source. Select the intended OBS scene, add a Media Source from the Sources panel, and name it.
- Select the local file. Choose the video file and check that it plays correctly in the scene, including its audio.
- Enable looping. Turn on the Loop property. It is off by default, so without enabling it the file will not repeat automatically.
- Preview the end of playback. Check that the file restarts as intended and that its audio and visual content are suitable for repetition.
Media Source is a single-file playback source, not a playlist manager. If you need several videos, use VLC Video Source instead. OBS Project’s source documentation describes these playback settings, but does not promise that either source will keep a broadcast running through computer, OBS, power, or internet failures.
Meet YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
Before configuring OBS to broadcast, confirm that the channel is eligible to stream. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Encoder software is one supported way to stream. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In OBS, configure the broadcast using the stream key and connection details supplied through YouTube’s live-streaming setup. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in recordings or screenshots, and reset it if it is exposed. Source looping controls local media playback; they do not configure or protect the YouTube broadcast connection.
Account for the made-for-kids setting
Whether a channel or individual broadcast is made for kids depends on its actual audience and content; the technical setup does not decide that question. YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes selfDeclaredMadeForKids for an owner’s designation and a read-only madeForKids value reflecting the designation. Those fields describe settings and status, not a legal determination. See the YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference.

For streams designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, and Super Chat. Comments on live archives and upcoming streams and reminder notifications are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may appear. Plan the stream and audience experience around those restrictions; do not build a format that depends on the unavailable features. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions.
Common problems and what to check
- VLC Video Source is unavailable or does not play: install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after its final item: open the source properties and verify Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The same file repeats unexpectedly: check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled, or confirm the playlist contains the files you expect.
- A source stops when changing scenes: inspect the source’s visibility behavior. Its documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
- A single Media Source does not repeat: enable its Loop property.
- Playback is silent or subtitles are missing: check the selected media file, audio track, subtitle availability, and OBS audio routing.
- The YouTube broadcast will not start: check channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days, then verify the YouTube stream setup and OBS connection details.
- The broadcast stops after the computer or connection fails: source looping does not establish automatic broadcast recovery. Check the computer, OBS, power, and network; the OBS source documentation does not claim to recover a live stream after those failures.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
