To loop one podcast episode in OBS, add a Media Source and enable Loop. To play several local episodes in sequence, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. These settings repeat playback in OBS; they do not guarantee that a computer or livestream will keep running unattended.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | Setting to repeat playback |
|---|---|---|
| One local episode file | Media Source | Enable Loop. |
| Several local episode files | VLC Video | Enable Loop Playlist; turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed order. |
The VLC Video source appears only when VLC is installed. OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you use a 64-bit OBS installation, install the matching 64-bit VLC version.
Set up one podcast episode
- In OBS, select or create the scene that should display the episode.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select OK.
- In the source properties, enable Local File if needed and browse to the episode file.
- Enable Loop, then select OK.
- Check the scene preview and audio meters to confirm the file plays and sound is reaching OBS.
Media Source also has a setting to restart playback when the source becomes active; OBS documents that option as on by default. If your scene changes affect playback, check this setting alongside the VLC visibility controls described below.
Build a playlist of podcast episodes
- Install VLC if it is not already installed, matching its architecture to OBS.
- In OBS, select the scene for the podcast broadcast. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Name the source and select OK.
- In the source properties, add the local episode files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence. Turn it on only if you want the episode order randomized.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the start of the playlist after it reaches the end.
- Select OK, then play through the source in OBS to check the episode order, picture, and audio.
OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Confirm both in the source properties rather than relying on defaults, especially if you have edited the source before.

Choose what happens when the source is hidden
A source can become hidden when you switch scenes or toggle its visibility. In the VLC Video source properties, set Visibility Behaviour to match your scene workflow. OBS lists stopping when hidden and restarting when visible as the default. Other documented behaviors pause when hidden and resume when visible, or keep playing while hidden.
- Stop and restart: Use this when playback should begin again whenever the source returns to view.
- Pause and resume: Use this when the episode should continue from its current position after the source is shown again.
- Always play: Use this when the playlist should continue even while its scene or source is hidden.
For a single Media Source, check its own restart-when-active behavior if scene switching changes where playback resumes. Test the actual scene transitions before broadcasting.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. If you schedule a stream, use the scheduled stream’s Live Control Room session.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the appropriate YouTube connection method and enter the stream URL and key in the corresponding fields. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Apply the settings, return to the main OBS window, and select Start Streaming.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming encoder preview. Check the video and audio, then follow YouTube’s on-screen steps to go live.
- Open the intended watch page and monitor the broadcast after it starts. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance covers creating or selecting a stream, connecting the encoder, previewing, and going live.
OBS and YouTube menu labels can change between releases. If the labels differ, use the current Stream settings in OBS and the current Live Control Room instructions for the encoder stream you selected.
Plan for long broadcasts and replays
A loop in OBS repeats media playback; it does not keep the computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube session running if one of them stops. YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce one complete YouTube replay.

If you need an archive, consider recording a local backup and check that the recording is being saved correctly. YouTube recommends monitoring streams and checking local archive files in its live streaming tips. A portable external SSD may be useful if you need more local space for episode files or recordings, but OBS does not require one.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC, then restart OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified by the OBS documentation.
- An episode is missing or will not play: Confirm the file is still at the path saved in the source and can be opened locally. If files were moved, update the playlist entries in the VLC Video properties.
- The playlist stops after the last episode: Open VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Episodes play in an unexpected order: Check that Shuffle Playlist is off and review the playlist order.
- Playback restarts or stops after a scene switch: Review Visibility Behaviour for VLC Video or the restart-when-active option for Media Source. Choose pause/resume or always-play behavior if playback must continue across scene changes.
- YouTube does not show the encoder preview: Confirm OBS is streaming, the selected YouTube stream is the one you intend to use, and its stream URL and key were copied into OBS correctly. Check the current Live Control Room status before going live.
- The livestream disconnects or playback goes offline: Check whether OBS is still running and connected, then inspect the local network and YouTube Live Control Room. A source loop cannot recover a failed computer, connection, or encoder session.
