Use Audacity’s Truncate Silence effect for long near-silent stretches inside a recording, and ripple deletion for gaps you select between clips. Keep natural breaths and pauses, then listen through the edit: level-and-duration detection cannot tell dead air from an intentional pause. Before editing, clarify whether you mean pauses within an episode, blank space between clips, or the space between separate episodes in a YouTube podcast playlist.
First, identify which kind of gap you need to remove
- Quiet audio inside a recording: Try Audacity’s Truncate Silence, which detects audio below a chosen volume threshold for a chosen duration.
- Empty space between clips or at a clip boundary: Select the gap and use a ripple-delete option to pull later audio earlier. Audacity’s clip-movement preference can affect whether Truncate Silence handles gaps between clips.
- Space between separate episodes: These are playlist entries, not silent sections in one recording. Arrange full-length video episodes in the intended order in YouTube Studio; do not shorten the episodes to remove playlist spacing.
These are different editing and publishing jobs. In particular, YouTube’s podcast feature is a playlist of video episodes, not an audio playlist: an MP3 alone cannot be turned directly into a YouTube podcast episode.
Shorten long silences in Audacity
1. Protect the original
Save an untouched copy of each recording or Audacity project before making edits, especially if you plan to process multiple episodes. This gives you a clean recovery point if an automatic cut removes a pause that matters.
2. Choose the detection threshold and duration
Audacity defines silence for this effect by level and time: audio must remain below the threshold you set for at least the selected duration. The threshold is adjustable from -20 dB to -80 dB. A quiet spoken word, breath, or fade can fall below a threshold, so the effect does not recognize meaning—it only evaluates signal level and duration.

Choose a minimum duration long enough to ignore ordinary speech pauses, then decide how much time should remain. In its Truncate Silence manual, Audacity illustrates shortening silences of at least 20 seconds to 5 seconds. That is an example setting, not a universal podcast standard.
3. Select the mode that fits the edit
- Truncate Detected Silence: Makes each detected qualifying passage the same retained duration.
- Compress Excess Silence: Reduces only the portion longer than the detection duration, proportionally, rather than setting each qualifying passage to one retained length.
Use the mode that matches your desired pacing. Neither mode knows whether a long pause is dramatic, intentional, or caused by an editing mistake.

4. Handle tracks according to whether they must stay in sync
When several tracks are selected, Audacity’s default behavior looks for silence at the same timeline position across them, treating them as a synchronized mix. That is generally the safer approach for dialogue recorded on separate speaker tracks. Processing tracks independently can shorten each at different points and desynchronize speakers. Independent truncation is appropriate only when the selected material does not need linked timing.
If you are trying to remove blank space between clips, check Audacity’s preference for whether editing a clip can move other clips. The manual notes that Truncate Silence may not process gaps between clips unless Editing a clip can move other clips is enabled.

5. Review the whole episode
Listen from beginning to end, with special attention to sentence boundaries, breaths, quiet words, fades, and transitions. Audacity’s basic audio-editing guidance recommends keeping breaths and removing long gaps rather than every pause; cutting every pause can make speech sound rushed and unnatural. If a cut harms the rhythm, undo it and adjust the threshold, duration, or retained time.
Use ripple deletion for gaps you want to close manually
For a visible empty region between clips, manual selection gives you control over exactly what moves. Audacity distinguishes closing a gap with ripple deletion from replacing audio with silence: ripple deletion shifts later material earlier, while Silence Audio preserves the selection’s duration. Muting or silencing a gap therefore does not remove elapsed time.

- Select the unwanted gap or region in the waveform.
- Choose Audacity’s Close gap (ripple) option to remove that time and move following audio earlier.
- If the recording has multiple aligned tracks and later material must remain synchronized, use an across-track ripple delete rather than shifting only one track.
- Play through the edit. Undo and revise it if words, breaths, fades, or transitions sound clipped or rushed.
Manual ripple deletion is preferable when you need to make a judgment call about a particular pause. Threshold-based truncation is faster for repeated, clearly unwanted long silences, but still needs a listening pass.

If by “streaming” you mean a live broadcast that plays files continuously, that is a separate workflow from arranging podcast episodes in a playlist.
