OBS or a Cloud Service for a 24/7 YouTube Radio Station?

OBS works when you can keep a local computer and connection running; cloud playout suits prerecorded YouTube radio that should continue while your computer is off.

Choose OBS if you can keep a computer, internet connection, and the streaming process running; choose cloud playout if your prerecorded radio stream should continue while your computer is off. OBS runs locally and sends its stream directly to YouTube, so you manage local interruptions. A cloud service plays uploaded material from provider-managed infrastructure. Neither option should be described as guaranteed uninterrupted without evidence for the specific service and setup.

What a 24/7 YouTube radio stream needs

YouTube’s encoder workflow sends video and audio to a live stream. For an audio-led radio station, pair the music or spoken-word feed with a static branded image or a looped visual; an audio-only feed is not the workflow described in YouTube’s encoder setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and this 24/7 radio setup guide.

First enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream, then provide the encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Protect it, and rotate it if it is exposed.

For prerecorded programming, prepare the audio and visual assets you have the rights to use, then test the complete output before leaving it running. A continuous schedule does not remove your responsibility to follow YouTube’s copyright rules or its policies on reused content; the material and the way you present it still matter.

OBS versus cloud playout

Decision OBS on a local computer Cloud playout or service
Where playback and encoding run On your computer. OBS connects directly to YouTube; it does not send the stream through OBS-operated relay servers. On provider-managed cloud infrastructure. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for prerecorded 24/7 video, and Upstream describes cloud playback and scheduled prerecorded streams.
Can your computer be off? No, not in an OBS-only setup. The computer and streaming process need to remain available. Yes, for the cloud playback described by Upstream; YouTube’s Gyre directory entry also says a dedicated PC is not needed.
What you manage The computer, OBS process, local media, internet connection, and recovery when something stops. Uploaded media and service configuration. Features such as scheduling depend on the service and plan.
Cost evidence OBS is software; the cost of a dedicated computer, electricity, and internet has not been estimated here. Upstream displayed a free plan with 24 streaming hours per month and an unlimited single stream for $30/month on 2026-10-03. AWS Elemental MediaLive charges according to inputs, outputs, add-ons, configuration, and region.
Reliability evidence OBS documents dropped frames as a sign of connection instability or a bitrate beyond the connection’s capacity. No comparative uptime figures are established. Vendor descriptions use continuous-streaming language, but no independent uptime comparison is established. A directory entry or service feature description is not a guarantee for your channel.
Best fit An operator who can keep local equipment and connectivity available and respond to disruptions. A creator who wants prerecorded programming to play while their own computer is off.

Other candidate approaches in the reviewed material include Gyre and Upstream for prerecorded video, and AWS Elemental MediaLive for configurable broadcast-grade cloud processing. They are not ranked here: the available evidence does not establish a head-to-head comparison of radio playlist support, uptime, rights handling, or support quality. See YouTube’s verified encoder directory, Upstream’s feature page, and AWS Elemental MediaLive.

Set up OBS for a radio stream

  1. Enable YouTube Live. Complete channel verification and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement, as YouTube notes that activation can take that long.
  2. Create the destination stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP. Keep the key private.
  3. Build the audio-and-visual scene. Add the audio source or playlist and a static image or looped visual. Confirm both are present in the OBS preview and that audio meters move. Test representative material, including any transitions or movement your finished stream will contain.
  4. Choose stable encoder settings. YouTube’s current settings support H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). RTMP/RTMPS audio may use AAC or MP3. Match the OBS encoder choices to YouTube’s current requirements and the capabilities of your computer.
  5. Set a bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory targets for every static-image radio stream. Choose resolution and bitrate for the actual output and reliable upload capacity; a modest visual may not benefit from a higher resolution if it makes the connection unstable.
  6. Start and monitor a test. Go live with representative audio and visuals, then check YouTube’s stream health and the OBS statistics. Look for dropped frames, audio gaps, and visual problems before relying on the setup continuously.
  7. Plan for recovery. Keep the computer awake, prevent planned restarts or updates from interrupting the session, and decide who will respond if OBS, the machine, the network, or YouTube ends the stream. An automatic restart loop can restart a local process, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every platform-side interruption.

For an advanced workflow, YouTube also supports HLS with specific requirements: muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and media playlists and segments sent over HTTPS. This is a technical alternative, not the simplest route for a typical creator setting up a radio channel. See YouTube’s HLS broadcasting documentation.

Keep the stream key and broadcast safe

  • Do not publish the stream key in a screenshot, tutorial, or public document. If it leaks, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or service using it.
  • Use recordings, images, and other assets you are authorized to stream. A 24/7 schedule does not itself grant rights to music, films, or other material.
  • Do not assume a long-running broadcast will become one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so this guidance does not promise one automatically archived VOD for the entire broadcast.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

OBS shows dropped frames

OBS identifies rising dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate beyond the connection’s capacity. Reduce the bitrate or output demands, check the upload connection, and run another test. See OBS’s network troubleshooting guide.

YouTube does not receive the broadcast

Confirm live streaming is enabled, the selected YouTube event is the intended one, and OBS has the matching server URL and current stream key. If the key was changed or exposed, update it in OBS. First-time channel activation may take up to 24 hours.

Audio plays but the picture is blank or frozen

Check that the image or looped visual source is active in the scene, visible in the preview, and included in the output. Test the actual scene rather than only checking the audio meters.

The stream stops after a computer or network interruption

OBS runs on the local machine and connects directly to YouTube, so a powered-off computer, stopped process, or lost connection can interrupt delivery. Restore the machine and connection, verify the event and key, then restart and monitor the broadcast. A local restart mechanism does not address every YouTube-side event.

A cloud service is not playing the expected schedule

Check that the intended media was uploaded, the playlist or schedule is selected, and the service’s configured destination uses the correct YouTube stream details. Scheduling and playback behavior vary by product; confirm them in that service’s documentation rather than assuming every cloud tool handles audio-radio playlists identically.
