To run an always-on YouTube radio stream on an Ubuntu VPS, use FFmpeg to send your audio and a static or looping visual to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, then monitor both the VPS and YouTube’s stream health. This can restart a failed encoder process, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream: the VPS, network, YouTube ingest, account status, and content rights all matter.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu VPS with sufficient CPU for your chosen encoding settings and sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom above the aggregate stream bitrate; verify performance from the VPS rather than assuming a plan is sufficient.
- FFmpeg installed with support for the codecs and output protocol you intend to use. Check the installed build before relying on a particular encoder or RTMPS workflow.
- A radio audio source and a visual source, such as a still image or looping video. A radio-style feed still needs a video stream for YouTube Live.
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube’s current help guidance requires channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the creator be at least 16 years old: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
Choose the VPS for its Ubuntu availability, sustained outbound capacity, and CPU that you have tested with your actual media and encoding settings. The available guidance does not establish a universal minimum VPS plan or a provider that will suit every stream.
Connect the VPS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and prepare a test. Confirm channel eligibility, then plan an unlisted or private test before making the station public.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event.
- Copy the current RTMPS details. Open Stream settings, reveal the RTMPS URL and stream key, and provide them to FFmpeg securely. Retrieve these values from your own account; do not copy a guide’s sample key, expose a real key in a public script, or leave it in shell history or logs.
- Use RTMPS on port 443. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS transport. Its developer guidance requires the correct YouTube ingest endpoint and application path on port 443. The hostname also matters for SNI authentication in the TLS handshake. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Build and test the FFmpeg output. FFmpeg documents real-time publishing of a file to an RTMP server with
-reand FLV output, for example:ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. That is a protocol example, not a complete tested YouTube command. Adapt the inputs, codecs, output options, and destination to your media and YouTube settings, and verify the installed FFmpeg build supports them. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Keep credentials separate from public command examples. For production, use a protected configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your VPS, restrict file permissions, and avoid logging the stream key.
Choose encoder settings and check capacity
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before deployment.

| H.264 video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s listed figures; the page reviewed does not state a publication year. For a radio station with a simple visual, choose resolution for the visual and audience needs rather than defaulting to 1080p. Higher resolutions or more demanding encodes can consume more CPU and bandwidth. Test with representative audio and motion, confirm sustained outbound capacity from the VPS, and leave roughly 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends in its network guidance.
Keep FFmpeg supervised and verify the live feed
On Ubuntu, use a process supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot, restart it after an exit, and retain logs for diagnosis. A supervisor watches the process; it does not verify that YouTube is accepting or displaying the feed, that the live event is still valid, or that a reconnect will resume the same event. There is no single provider-independent systemd unit or reconnect policy established here, so configure and test those behaviors on your actual VPS and account.

- Check the FFmpeg process and logs, CPU use, and outbound network conditions.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, health status, and the public or unlisted watch page to confirm viewers can see and hear the stream.
- Test recovery from FFmpeg exit, VPS reboot, source-file exhaustion, network interruption, and a YouTube-side stream error in a non-public test before relying on unattended operation.
- Distinguish a running process from a healthy ingest. The LiveStreams API identifies stream states such as
active, ready, inactive, anderror, and health statuses includinggood,ok,bad, andnoData: LiveStreams API reference.
If RTMPS reports an SSL error or times out
- Confirm the destination uses
rtmps, not ordinaryrtmp, and that the full server and application path came from the current YouTube stream settings. - Verify outbound access to port 443 and confirm the FFmpeg build and selected output support the required protocol.
- Check that the destination hostname is preserved for TLS SNI; using an incorrect endpoint or path can prevent a successful connection.
- Compare FFmpeg logs with YouTube’s Live Control Room health information to determine whether the failure is local or at ingest.
Plan for archives and music rights
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If replays matter, plan shorter sessions with a deliberate transition or record locally as a separate task, including disk capacity and recording rotation. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will become one complete replay. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Use only audio and visuals for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of Live Content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights: YouTube Terms of Service. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A match may trigger a warning, replacement placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even with a license, a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption: YouTube live-streaming restrictions.

DIY VPS or a cloud service?
The VPS-and-FFmpeg approach gives you control over the media pipeline and server configuration, but you must maintain the VPS, encoder process, recovery behavior, logs, network capacity, and archive plan yourself. A cloud service is an alternative when the goal is to keep uploaded video looping without leaving a home computer running.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account). Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. You can compare the DIY and cloud costs with the cloud vs PC cost calculator. Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Source exhaustion, process failure, or VPS reboot | Inspect logs and input behavior; configure process supervision and test boot and failure recovery. Confirm YouTube accepts the restarted feed. |
| FFmpeg runs, but Live Control Room shows no data or unhealthy ingest | Destination, key, protocol, network, or stream configuration | Verify the current RTMPS URL and key, port 443 connectivity, encoder output, and YouTube health status. A running process alone does not confirm a working stream. |
| SSL error or connection timeout | Incorrect RTMPS endpoint or path, port 443 access, protocol support, or SNI hostname | Check the URL from Stream settings, preserve the hostname, and verify the client build and outbound connection. |
| Stream is interrupted after music or other content is detected | Copyright claim, missing rights, or missing Content ID allowlisting | Use cleared material and, where applicable, arrange allowlisting with the rights owner before broadcasting. |
| Expected replay is missing or incomplete | Broadcast exceeded 12 hours or local archive was not configured | Use shorter sessions or a separate local recording and verify archive storage and rotation. |
