For a playlist of separate videos—or when you need shuffle—use VLC Video Source, then check its playlist and visibility settings. Neither source guarantees a continuous YouTube broadcast: OBS plays media inside a scene, while YouTube receives the separate encoder feed.
Which OBS source should you choose?

These are playback differences, not evidence that one source or application is universally more reliable for continuous streaming. OBS describes the source controls in its Media Sources guide and Sources Guide.
Set up one repeating video with Media Source
- In OBS, open the scene that should show the video. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one. In the source properties, choose the local video file.
- Enable Loop. Since Loop is documented as off by default, confirm the checkbox rather than assuming the file will repeat.
- Choose whether to restart playback when the source becomes active if that option suits the scene. Preview the opening and ending, including the transition from the end back to the beginning.
- Check the scene’s audio mixer and listen for a gap, abrupt cut, or unwanted silence at the loop boundary.
Set up a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC before adding the source. OBS requires VLC libraries for VLC Video Source; OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In the target scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the video files to the playlist in the intended order. Check the file paths and preview each item, especially files with different aspect ratios or audio levels.
- Set Loop Playlist according to whether the sequence should restart after the last item. Its documented default is on.
- Set Shuffle Playlist only if the order should vary. Its documented default is off.
- Review the visibility behavior. The documented default, “Stop when not visible, restart when visible,” can make playback restart after switching away from the scene. If playback must continue through a scene change, choose the appropriate continue/pause behavior available in the source properties and test it in your actual scene layout.
- Preview transitions between files as well as the end-to-start point. Check both picture and audio before going live.
Why a looping video does not keep YouTube live
The OBS source controls what plays inside a scene. The encoder—OBS in this setup—sends a stream to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for the live event. YouTube says the stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. A file looping correctly therefore does not prove that OBS, the computer, the network, or YouTube will remain connected.
To create and connect an encoder stream, follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key private. In YouTube Studio, verify the event’s preview and stream status rather than relying only on the OBS preview.

Test the complete church service setup
- Test representative content: Use the actual videos, audio, transitions, and scene changes planned for the service. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion.
- Check the connection: Select production settings your internet upload connection can sustain. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for current recommendations; suitable values depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, and the guidance can change.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream health: Confirm that the incoming picture and sound are correct and monitor the event during the broadcast.
- Test source visibility: Switch away from and back to the media scene. Confirm that VLC continues, pauses, or restarts exactly as intended.
- Check encoder load: If video stutters or frames are missed, use OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide to investigate system and encoding issues.
- Arrange monitoring: Decide who will watch OBS and YouTube Studio and what they will do if the encoder feed or source fails. A playlist loop is not a substitute for monitoring.
Common problems and fixes
The video stops at the end
For a single file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, check that VLC Video Source has Loop Playlist enabled and that the intended items are in the playlist.
The VLC source stops or restarts after a scene switch
Review the source’s visibility behavior. The documented default stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. Choose the behavior appropriate to the scene and test the transition before the service.

VLC Video Source is unavailable or does not play
Confirm that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS. OBS specifically says to use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Then verify that playlist paths point to files the streaming computer can access.
The video loops, but YouTube says the stream ended
Check whether OBS is still sending to the live event, whether the network connection is working, and what YouTube Studio reports for the stream. The source’s playback loop and YouTube’s live-event state are separate.

The picture or sound stutters
Test at a quality your upload connection can reliably sustain, check YouTube’s stream health, and consult the current encoder recommendations and OBS performance troubleshooting guidance. Test the actual media and audio transitions rather than only a still or short sample.
