OBS Media Source vs VLC Video Playlist for a 24/7 YouTube Study Stream

For one repeating file, use OBS Media Source; for multiple local study videos, use VLC Video. Learn the setup, looping behavior, VLC dependency, and what neither source can do to guarantee a 24/7 broadcast.

Use OBS’s built-in Media Source when you want to repeat one local video; use VLC Video when you want OBS to play a playlist of multiple local files. In OBS, these are different playback sources—not competing playlist modes. Either can provide looping playback, but neither by itself keeps the YouTube broadcast online if the computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube connection fails.

Which OBS source should you choose?

  • One study video, repeated: Add a Media Source and enable Loop.
  • Several study videos: Add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and keep Loop Playlist enabled if you want the list to repeat.
  • Fixed sequence: Leave Shuffle Playlist off. For a changing playlist or scene-based setup, test the behavior in your own installation before depending on it.

OBS’s documentation describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. The feature descriptions and defaults below are from OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated 2022-01-11; labels and behavior can vary with installed versions, so check your current interface.

Media Source and VLC Video compared

Decision Media Source VLC Video
Content One local media file A playlist of media items
Repeat Loop repeats the file; documented default is Off Loop Playlist repeats after the list finishes; documented default is On
Order Not a multi-file playlist control Plays in list order unless shuffle is enabled; documented shuffle default is Off
Dependency Built into OBS; no VLC dependency is listed for this source Requires VLC installed. OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC
Other documented controls Hardware decoding, playback speed, YUV range, visibility and file handling Visibility behavior, network caching, audio track and subtitles
Best fit One long study video or a single repeated background A rotating collection of local study videos

Set up one repeating study video

  1. Add the source: In OBS, select the scene where the video should play, then add a Media Source from the Sources panel. Name it clearly, such as “Study video.”
  2. Select the file: In the source properties, choose the local file. OBS documentation lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; actual playback can still depend on the file encoding and the components available on your system.
  3. Enable repetition: Turn on Loop. OBS documents this setting as Off by default; with it enabled, the file repeats when playback completes.
  4. Check the scene: Start playback and confirm the picture and audio behave as intended. If you use multiple scenes, decide whether the media source should keep playing when it is hidden or restart when visible.

Set up a playlist of local videos with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC: Install VLC before adding the source. OBS says VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and will not appear as a source unless VLC is installed. Match architectures: OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add VLC Video: In the target OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and open its properties.
  3. Populate the playlist: Add the local media files and arrange them in the order you want. For a predictable study schedule, leave Shuffle Playlist disabled; OBS documents its default as Off.
  4. Set playlist repetition: Keep Loop Playlist enabled if the list should start over when it reaches the end. OBS documents this setting as On by default.
  5. Choose visibility behavior: Review Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If you switch scenes, choose deliberately whether playback should stop, pause and resume, or continue.
  6. Test the complete sequence: Preview the source through a full cycle or enough transitions to check file order, audio, and the return from the final item to the start. Do not assume every codec or file will play on every system.

OBS documents network caching at 400 ms by default for VLC Video, but does not give a general recommendation to change it. Treat it as a setting to investigate only if you have a specific playback problem, not as a standard reliability tweak.

What looping does—and does not—keep online

A media source controls what OBS plays. The live broadcast still depends on OBS running on your computer and sending the stream to YouTube over your connection. OBS’s Help Portal explains that OBS connects directly to the streaming destination and that instability or inadequate capacity can cause dropped frames. A Loop or Loop Playlist setting is not an uptime guarantee or an automatic recovery mechanism.

Keep the computer awake, OBS open, and the network connection stable for a do-it-yourself 24/7 stream. Monitor both OBS and YouTube rather than assuming that a looping source means the broadcast is still reaching viewers. The sources here do not establish a YouTube-specific duration limit or special eligibility rule for 24/7 study streams.

YouTube transport is a separate choice

OBS’s media source determines local playback; an encoder’s transport protocol determines how the stream reaches YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup guide lists OBS among encoders that support HLS and presents HLS as an ingestion option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. The guide’s HLS requirements include TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT, 1–4 second segment duration, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are HLS transport requirements, not settings that choose VLC Video over Media Source.

YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than one continuous stream like RTMP. For a typical study stream, do not change transport protocols merely because you chose one OBS playback source; follow the requirements for the protocol and encoder configuration you actually use.

Rights and changing playlists

Being able to play a file through OBS does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use study footage, music, ambient sound, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission, and consider YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules separately from technical setup. The sources available for this comparison do not establish that a particular file is cleared or that a particular study stream qualifies for monetization.

Do not count on playlist edits made during a live broadcast appearing immediately. A 2023 OBS forum discussion includes a user report that edits sometimes appeared live and sometimes required restarting OBS and YouTube; it does not establish supported update behavior. If you need to change the playlist during a broadcast, test that exact OBS/VLC setup in advance and have a safe restart plan.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from the source list VLC is not installed or OBS cannot use the installed VLC libraries Install VLC, restart OBS, and confirm that 64-bit OBS has 64-bit VLC, as specified in OBS documentation.
A file plays once and stops Media Source’s Loop setting is off Open the source properties and enable Loop.
The playlist stops at the last item Loop Playlist is off Enable Loop Playlist in VLC Video properties.
Videos play in an unexpected order Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order is not what you expect Disable Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence and review the list order.
Playback stops or starts over after changing scenes Visibility Behaviour is set to stop when hidden and restart when shown Review the source’s visibility behavior and select the stop, pause/resume, or continue behavior that fits your scene plan.
A video will not play or behaves differently on another machine File encoding or available playback components differ Test each file on the streaming computer. The supported format list does not guarantee that every file encoded in those containers will work on every system.
OBS drops frames or YouTube loses the stream Network instability, insufficient capacity, or another streaming-path issue Check the OBS connection and system while streaming, then investigate the network and YouTube connection. A looping source does not restore a dropped broadcast automatically.
A playlist edit does not appear live Live-update behavior is not established consistently Test edits in advance; if necessary, stop and restart OBS and the YouTube broadcast using a planned procedure.
