Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor one local video, use OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For a playlist of local files, use VLC Video and keep Loop Playlist enabled. VLC Video adds playlist and shuffle controls, but it requires VLC to be installed—and its architecture must match OBS. Either source supplies media to your OBS scene; YouTube receives the finished, encoded OBS feed through a separate stream URL and key.
Choose the OBS source that fits your video
| What you want to loop | Use | Loop setting | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video file | Media Source | Loop (off by default) | Built into OBS; straightforward for a single file. |
| A playlist of local files | VLC Video | Loop Playlist (on by default) | Supports playlists and shuffle, but requires a compatible VLC installation. |
These recommendations concern playback inside OBS, not different ways of connecting to YouTube. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video settings on its Media Sources page, dated January 11, 2022.
Loop one local video with Media Source
- Add the source: In the OBS Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Choose the file: In the source properties, select the local-file option and browse to the video. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
- Enable repetition: Check Loop. It is off by default, so without it the file will not repeat through this setting.
- Review the other playback controls: Restart playback when source becomes active defaults on. Show nothing when playback ends also defaults on, while Close file when inactive defaults off. These settings are distinct from Loop: restart-on-active affects playback when the source becomes active; the end behavior affects what is shown after playback ends; and close-when-inactive governs the file when the source is inactive.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Check the dependency first: Install VLC for VLC Video to appear as an OBS source. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source: In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Build the playlist: Add the local media files in the order you want them played. VLC Video is the OBS source documented for playlist support.
- Set repeat and order: Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist when it runs out of media; it is on by default. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the items played in a shuffled order; shuffle is off by default.
- Choose behavior when hidden: Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit the production. By default, playback stops when the source is not visible and restarts when it becomes visible. VLC Video also has audio and subtitle track settings, and its documented network-caching value is 400 ms.
OBS documents VLC Video as similar to Media Source, with playlist support and VLC libraries for extended media support. The documented controls establish how the source is configured; they do not establish that editing a playlist during an active YouTube broadcast avoids a reset, gap, or interruption.
Understand “stop when not visible”
“Visible” refers to whether the source is shown in the OBS scene—not whether the OBS application window is on screen. In the Sources dock, the eye control shows or hides an individual source. VLC Video’s default stop-and-restart behavior applies when that source is hidden or otherwise not visible in the scene. If a scene change hides it, decide whether stopping and restarting fits the intended show behavior. See the OBS Sources Guide, dated January 11, 2022, for source visibility and scene behavior.

Connect OBS to YouTube separately
The media source plays the content that becomes part of the OBS production. The encoder connection sends that composed feed to YouTube. In OBS, configure YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the streaming settings; the key is the credential information YouTube uses to accept the encoder feed, while the URL is the destination entered in the encoder. Neither setting controls whether a Media Source or VLC Video loops. YouTube explains these connection settings in Manage live stream settings (reviewed October 3, 2026; the page did not expose a publication date).
Check rights and playlist changes before relying on a long stream
Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material. The OBS source documentation describes playback controls, not whether particular content meets YouTube’s policies. It also does not establish that adding or editing playlist entries while live is interruption-free. If changes matter during a broadcast, make them before going live or verify the behavior in a controlled setup rather than assuming the playlist will change seamlessly.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The single video plays once and stops: Open Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default.
- The playlist does not repeat: Open VLC Video properties and check Loop Playlist. This is on by default, so confirm it has not been changed.
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Playback stops after a scene change: Check whether the source became hidden and review VLC Video’s visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
- The source is configured, but YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check the encoder destination URL and stream key separately from the media-source settings.
- A live playlist edit causes an unexpected change: OBS’s documentation does not promise gap-free live edits. Prepare the playlist in advance or test the exact change outside a critical broadcast.
