Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor one local video you want to repeat, start with OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. Choose VLC Video when you need a playlist or want VLC’s extended media support, and install a VLC version whose bitness matches OBS. Neither source is documented as a 4K/60 fps performance winner: the file, scene, output settings, encoder, hardware, and available system headroom determine whether the stream holds up.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| One local file on repeat | Direct fit: enable Loop for the selected file. | Can loop a playlist, but adds setup that is unnecessary for a single file. |
| Several files or a playlist | The OBS documentation does not describe a playlist feature for this source. | Provides playlist items, playlist looping, and shuffle controls. |
| File formats | OBS lists common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. | Uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Confirm that your particular file works; extended support is not a guarantee for every codec or container. |
| Separate VLC installation | The Media Source documentation does not list VLC as a requirement. | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| 4K/60 performance | No source-specific performance guarantee is documented. | No source-specific performance guarantee is documented. |
These distinctions follow the documented source features, not a controlled performance benchmark. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Set up a single-file loop with Media Source
- Add the source: In the OBS scene where the video should appear, use the Sources panel’s + button and select Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Choose the file and loop it: In the source properties, select the local video file and enable Loop. OBS will repeat that file when playback completes.
- Check playback behavior: Review the options for restarting playback when the source becomes active, how it behaves when hidden, and what happens when playback ends. The right choice depends on whether the scene or source may be hidden and shown during your broadcast.
- Check decoding and speed if needed: Media Source offers hardware decoding when available and a source speed control. Treat these as options to test on your machine, not as guaranteed fixes for dropped frames or overload.
- Match the scene to the intended output: OBS separates base canvas resolution from output resolution. If the canvas, video, and output differ, OBS may scale the source. Set the output resolution to the stream target and check the composition for unwanted cropping or scaling.
OBS lists supported formats and source controls in its Media Source guide; canvas and output resolution are explained in the OBS Studio overview.
Use VLC Video for a playlist or VLC-backed playback
- Install VLC first: VLC Video will not appear as an available source unless VLC is installed. Match the application bitness: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add VLC Video: In the intended scene, click + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video.
- Build the playlist: Add the media items you want to play. Set the playlist loop or shuffle behavior to match the intended rotation.
- Configure playback: Review visibility behavior, network caching where relevant, audio-track selection, and subtitle settings. For a local file loop, confirm the correct audio track and that subtitles are either configured as intended or not displayed.
- Test every item: Play through each file on the target system. VLC’s extended media support does not establish that every file or codec will work in your configuration.
OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support over built-in Media Source, and documents playlist and related controls in its Media Sources guide.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the stream for 4K at 60 fps
Choosing a source does not configure the full streaming pipeline. A 4K/60 broadcast also depends on OBS output resolution and frame rate, encoding capacity, scene complexity, and a stable upload connection. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps and that minimum compatibility requirements do not guarantee a machine can stream at a particular resolution and frame rate. There is no universal hardware minimum established for this exact workload.

| Video codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds; the listed video codec options are H.264, H.265, and AV1, and the encoder settings support up to 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular encoder can sustain the settings or that every viewer will receive a 4K/60 rendition. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Its 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Check the whole scene, not just the video source
- Set OBS output resolution and frame rate to the intended stream target; confirm whether OBS is scaling between the canvas, media, and output.
- Keep the scene as simple as your presentation allows. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, source count, and filters all affect rendering or encoding load.
- Run the actual loop and monitor OBS statistics and YouTube stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- For a long documentary, let the test run long enough to expose problems that a short preview may miss, including playback transitions, audio changes, and sustained system load.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes when output is overloaded. Its system requirements page warns that meeting basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee a given streaming resolution or frame rate.

Troubleshoot a loop that stutters or fails
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed, or its bitness does not match OBS. | Install VLC and make sure 64-bit OBS is paired with 64-bit VLC. |
| Media plays, but does not repeat | Loop is not enabled on Media Source, or playlist looping is not enabled for VLC Video. | Open the source properties and enable the appropriate file or playlist loop control. |
| A file will not play as expected | The file’s codec or container may not work in that setup. | Test the specific file on the streaming machine. If VLC’s broader media support is relevant, try VLC Video, but verify playback rather than assuming compatibility. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, or the stream stutters | The machine may not have enough headroom for the chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene, sources, or filters. | Simplify the scene and reduce output resolution or frame rate, then retest. Compare results on the actual machine rather than assuming one source is inherently faster. |
| OBS looks stable but YouTube reports stream-health problems | The ingest settings or upload stability may not sustain the stream. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, confirm the encoder settings and bitrate, and test the connection and full broadcast path. |
OBS’s guidance on performance limits is in its encoding troubleshooting guide; YouTube’s recommended ingest settings and testing guidance are on its live encoder settings page.
