VLC must be installed for the VLC source to appear. Neither choice, by itself, establishes that a YouTube watch-page URL or an expiring live-stream URL will play continuously. If you are creating your own broadcast, that is a separate encoder-to-YouTube workflow.
Choose the source that matches what you are playing
| What you need | OBS source or workflow | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one supported local media file | Media Source, with looping enabled | OBS documents supported media files and playback controls, not arbitrary YouTube watch URLs. |
| Play several local files in sequence or shuffle | VLC Video source with a playlist | VLC must be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| Send your own program to YouTube Live | OBS or another encoder configured to send a broadcast | This is broadcast creation, not a way to turn a YouTube playback URL into a stable playlist source. |
| Send an HLS feed to YouTube | An HLS-capable encoder configured to YouTube’s ingest requirements | HLS ingest requirements apply to the outgoing feed, not to a YouTube playback playlist pasted into OBS or VLC. |
OBS’s media-source guidance, dated January 11, 2022, describes Media Source and VLC Video on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the labels in your installed OBS version, since the interface can change. OBS Media Sources
Loop one local video with OBS Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you want to use. If the source is not already listed, use the Sources panel’s add control and select Media Source.
- In the source properties, select the local media file. OBS documents common supported media formats; the documentation does not promise support for every file or network address.
- Enable the source’s looping control if the video should restart when it reaches its end. Use the restart-playback option when you need it to begin from the start as the source becomes active.
- Keep the source active in the scene while it is needed. Check its visibility and playback behavior in the actual scene; hiding or switching away from sources can affect whether playback continues, depending on the setup.
- Start the outgoing stream only when your broadcast settings and YouTube destination are ready. A media source plays content inside OBS; it does not itself send anything to YouTube.
For a single file, this is the simpler documented route. It does not establish that a YouTube watch-page URL can be entered as the media file.
Queue multiple files with OBS VLC Video
- Install VLC before opening OBS. The OBS documentation says the VLC Video source appears when VLC is installed; when OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the intended scene.
- In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Confirm that the list contains the intended items and order.
- Enable playlist looping if the list should begin again after the last item. Enable shuffle only if you want the order to vary.
- Keep the source active while you expect playback. Preview the playlist through a full sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first if looping is enabled.
OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist-capable source with looping and shuffle controls. Those controls govern playlist playback; they do not guarantee that a network stream stays available, that an expiring URL refreshes, or that a broadcast automatically recovers after it ends.

Can you put a YouTube Live URL in the source?
The documentation cited here does not establish that a YouTube watch-page URL, a particular live playback URL, or an expiring stream manifest will work as a continuous Media Source or VLC playlist item. A playback URL is also not the same thing as a feed configured for YouTube ingestion. Test the exact URL with your installed OBS and VLC versions before relying on it, and do not treat a URL that happens to work once as proof of uninterrupted operation.
A YouTube stream ending, a changed or expired manifest, privacy settings, and network interruptions can each stop playback. The documented playlist controls do not resolve those conditions. Avoid relying on extracted internal playback manifests as permanent public URLs: the available documentation does not support a reliability claim for that method.

If you intend to rebroadcast another channel’s program, first confirm that you have the necessary permission and rights. The official guidance cited here does not determine the rights status of any particular video or channel.
Creating your own continuous broadcast is a different job
If the goal is to broadcast your own program, configure OBS as an encoder that sends a feed to your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours and requires a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted stream privacy settings. Treat the stream key as a secret credential: it lets an encoder send a feed to your channel.

Do not confuse YouTube HLS ingest with playback
YouTube’s HLS instructions describe sending an encoded feed to YouTube. They specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. These are requirements for an HLS-capable encoder sending video to YouTube—not instructions for loading a YouTube Live playback URL in OBS or VLC. YouTube: Set up an HLS stream

OBS’s formats guide explains that HLS video uses individual .ts segments and a playlist, and includes .m3u8 in its TS/HLS terminology. That format information does not certify any specific YouTube playback address as a stable source. OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide

- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS. Match the architecture: OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- A local file does not load: Confirm the file path is valid and that the format is supported by the installed setup. Try a known supported local file to distinguish a file problem from a source configuration problem.
- The file plays once and stops: Check the Media Source looping setting. For a playlist, check VLC Video’s loop setting and confirm the list includes the expected items.
- Playback stops when changing scenes: Check whether the source remains active and how its visibility/playback options are set. Test the scene transitions you plan to use.
- A network or YouTube URL fails or stops: The cited OBS documentation does not guarantee arbitrary YouTube URL support or automatic refresh of expiring manifests. Test the exact address, and use a supported local file or a legitimate feed whose provider documents playback behavior.
- YouTube receives no broadcast: Confirm that streaming is enabled for the channel, the correct stream key is configured in OBS, and the key has not been exposed or replaced. Check YouTube Studio’s incoming preview and stream status.
- YouTube rejects or delays an HLS feed: Verify the encoder is following YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements for segment duration and format, rolling playlist length, and HTTPS request method. Do not apply these ingest settings as if they fixed a playback-source URL.
